1966 Batman Movie (Adam West/Burt Ward)

I just got the special edition of the 1966 Batman movie, the one starring Adam West and Burt Ward. At the 52:59 time mark of the movie, Frank Gorshin (playing the Riddler) is facing the camera, and Adam West (playing Bruce Wayne) has his back to the camera. I about fell out of my chair when I heard the dialog, and I do NOT remember this from the original. Gorshin says, "You think you're pretty clever, don't you Mr. Wayne?" West replied (again with his back to the camera, so you can't see his mouth) "Clever enough to outwit you, you stupid f*ck!" (I put in the "*" only because this is an all-ages board and I don't want to get banned).

I checked the dialog in the subtitles, and the subtitles have the following for the dialog during that scene: Riddler-"You think you're clever don't you?" Wayne-"Clever enough to outwit you."

My questions are 1) is this really what Adam West says? "Clever enough to outwit you, you stupid f*ck!"?? 2) If so, how the heck did that get in the movie? Was that a joke by somebody putting together the dvd, kind of like whoever put those subliminal porn shots in some Disney movie (probably an urban legend but I think it happened)?

Thanks,
Dan P.

I don’t own the DVD. Ironically I have been watching my VHS copy religiously before I go to sleep over the past two weeks. Now I will have to pay attention in no way that I ever thought before.

Yes, please watch it and tell me if that bit of dialog is on the VHS version. I couldn't believe my ears, especially since this was always a very G-rated show

Thanks,
Dan

I quoted the subtitles above in my original post. The subtitle just says, "Clever enough to outwit you." The actual dialog supposedly from Adam West (although with his back turned so his lips aren't seen) clearly says, "Clever enough to outwit you, you stupid f*ck".

I think that the line is actually "You stupid thug". I've seen this film around 100 times since I was a kid, so I'm pretty sure that's what West says.

Just checked--

thug / "f__k"

Guess they kinda sound the same, ehe

"Thug" is an interesting possibility - however I played the scene for a friend of mine without telling him why I was doing so, I just said, "tell me what Batman says in this scene." He heard it and his eyes got real big, and he just humorously said, "wow, I thought Batman had more class than that." He heard the same thing I did, and it wasn't "thug"...

Dan, this movie has been around for close to forty years. Don't you think someone else would have noticed if Bruce Wayne called the Riddler a "stupid f**k" before now?

I might have to pick this up from the WalMart bin just to hear that part.

someone should post an audio cap

Agreed. I'd like to hear that.

It's one of my favorite lines in the movie and it's actually "Clever enough to outwit you, you stupid thug."

Sorry to all those of you who wanted an R-rated comic book super-hero movie.
