Glad to hear you lifted the hex off your DVD player

So in watching this Third Season DVD I also noticed that in this season of firsts that this is also the first time the witches of Samantha's family use an antique automobile to fly around in and arrive at her home, in the living room at that.

And after his appearance in "Witches and Warlocks Are My Favorite Things" Maurice doesn't pop in again until the end of the FIFTH SEASON! Up to this point he had been appearing once every season.

I'd forgotten how much of a drop-off in writing quality there was when the show switched to colour. It seems that with the departure of the writers from the B&W years (Danny Arnold, Jerry Davis and Bernard Slade), the show went much more for standardized fantasy plots with comedy, whereas the first two seasons were more romantic/domestic comedy with magical elements. Also this is the season where Darrin really started to become a jerk who's always, always yelling at Sam. Finally, I didn't realize that as early as this season they'd started remaking earlier episodes (the soapbox derby episode is a remake of the baseball episode from season 1).

The best episode of the third season is the "Charlie Harper, Winner" episode, which is a total throwback to the style of the first season (by a guy who wrote two great scripts for the first season). There are some other funny episodes, but the B&W seasons are the "essential" Bewitched for me.

A bit off topic, but for those keeping track of the Japanese R2/NTSC season sets, the last two have just been released, so the entire series is available from Sony there.

This gives me hope that seasons 4-8 are on the way in R1 too.

For the record, the Japanese 8th season set contains a bonus disc with all the "missing" episodes that were inexplicably left off the earlier season 1-3 sets.
Steve, thanks for the R2 info. Looks like a good bet for the entire R1 release.

David*P: Any clue as to why "Maurice" didn't appear more than he did in the series? My Mom loved that character in the series. Also, (I couldn't locate this in a "thread search"...sorry for a repeat question): When did "Dr Bombay" first appear in the series? I'm still in S1 on the DVD's.

Ever since these DVD's have come out, I can't get rid of the "Calling Dr. Bombay...Calling Dr. Bombay...Emergency, Emergency, Come right away" phrase

Yes, Dr. Bombay's first appearance is at the end of the third season in "There's Gold in Them Thar Pills".

I'm not sure why Maurice Evans didn't appear again until the Fifth Season.

In 1967 Maurice Evans would have been busy on location at the Planet of the Apes set most of the year.

As well as filming Rosemary's Baby right afterward.

It was about 1985 or so that I noticed that both series were suddenly being shown in butchered versions that placed the titles first. It seemed a new company was handling the syndication? These versions were cut to ribbons and I hated them.

In the 1980s Columbia Pictures Television farmed out the syndication rights to this and other of their shows (I Dream of Jeannie also, and I think there may have been others) to Program Exchange. They had the rights for about 10 years or so.

A funny tie-in to BW with that movie, besides the obvious of having Maurice Evans in it, Uncle Arthur and Endora protest that movie in the Fifth Season episode "The Battle of Burning Oak"

And also in "Samantha's Shopping Spree." Gotta love it!

I can't wait to get the rest of the seasons on DVD!

We're almost through watching the entire set of the 3rd season of Bewitched and I've gotta say that the transfer to dvd looks beautiful on these episodes. I can actually see the detail of the wallpaper pattern in the Stephens foyer!
The colors are nice and rich and the video is clear and sharp.

The sound is another matter.

The music and the audio on a few episodes seems to have what I can only describe as a warbling sound to them.Kind of like a warped record album.Very annoying.

The volume level varies from episode to episode as well.On some of the episodes we had to crank the volume up to hear them and there were a few times that I had to quickly turn the volume down so it didn't wake everyone in the house!
The sound goes from crisp and clear on some episodes to slightly muffled on others.

As already mentioned, the Ben Franklin episodes are the biggest botch job in the set.

On "My Friend Ben" the laugh track has been left off the episode.

All of the elements that others have noticed missing, the laugh track, special effects,"to be continued" and the recap are present on the Columbia House tapes that were released years ago (glad I hung onto mine).
It's a mystery to me why Sony would butcher this episode so badly yet dare to call this set "The Complete Third Season.
False advertising at it's finest.

I wonder what they'll screw up on season 4?

As I stated earlier, the transfer is beautiful and Bewitched has never looked better but the edited 2 part episode ruined this release for me and has slightly soured me on Sony.

I can handle music replacement on a dvd release as I totally understand the costs involved. I can also understand the original sponsor openings and logos not being present but I HATE edited episodes, especially when I'm spending my hard-earned money on a set that has "the complete such-and-such season" emblazoned in big bold letters on the dvd cover.

It's a very big disappointment to the fans who have been waiting years for this release.
Brett*H, I mentioned the sound a few posts back and was beginning to think that no one else noticed it, as no one responded to my post. I think these eps have been very slightly sped up, which is why the music warbles. There is one epsiode (I can't remember which; I'll have to watch them again) that features a VERY noticeably sped up closing credits. I love the music cues on BW, and it's kinda sad to hear them a bit off-key and wavering.

I especially notice the warbling music in "Sam's Spooky Chair" at the first...but it seems on the BW boards nobody else noticed it.

You could be right,John. I noticed this on a few of the episodes.

For what it's it worth,(and it probably won't do any good),I emailed and snail-mailed Sony and gave them the "what for" on their screw-ups regarding this release. My biggest gripe is the 2 part Ben Franklin episodes. I suggested to them that they might wish to consider issuing a corrected replacement disc for these 2 episodes as Anchor Bay did for their "Silk Stalkings" set when it was found that an episode had several minutes missing from it.

I also pointed out everyone's observations in this thread. I'm probably wasting my time doing it but hey, if enough people take the time to let Sony know that we tv-to-dvd fans notice these things, there's a remote chance that they may sit up and take heed.

We fans need to start speaking up about these incomplete "complete season" releases.

Brett, I think you are absolutely right! I had been thinking that it may be worth it to complain to Sony about this and see if they wouldn't be willing to send out replacement discs...there is no reason at all that these episodes should be edited as they are. It totally takes away from the enjoyment of the episodes.

I appreciate you posting all those contact addresses.

With the rumour going 'round about a July release for IDOJ I would assume that pretty soon we'll hear about BW being around that time as well. It's been over a month since the release of s.3 and with the way the time line went with the previous releases an official announcement should be short coming...

Re: Bewitched Season 3

Is the "Ben Franklin" 2-parter edited in the sense of missing scene footage? Or do the edits consist of "teaser" removals and/or sped-up sound, etc?

The end of the first part is blanked out where originally it had the words "Part 2 Next Week" superimposed over Samantha's worried face. Also they cut out one frame of footage when Samantha zaps in the tankard of ale...one frame shouldn't be a big deal but as it was part of the special effect, to me, it is a big deal. The second part does not have any of Samantha's recap of the last episode.

In addition, they completely left the laugh track off part 1, "My Friend Ben".

I have to confess it's very, very strange watching an episode of "Bewitched" without the familiar canned laughter.

Well, IDOJ S2 is scheduled for July 4th, but no announcement of BW S4 for the month of July. Grrrr.

I'm glad Jeannie fans are getting the sets quickly, but I wish the Bewitched fans would also get theirs on the same schedule. I H-A-T-E waiting! :p

It was in the Feature Film forum, under the "Some Like it Hot: Special Edition" thread. Listed the Sony relseases for July. Of course, come to think of it, it may not be 100% inclusive, but I'm pretty sure that if BW S4 was announced it would have been on the list. I'm hoping it's coming near the IDOJ release date.

Re: Bewitched Season 3

How could I have missed this thread?
I agree with what David and most of the rest have said.
This is my favorite series,
and I am very disappointed in this most recent set.

I must admit to being dazzled by some of the visuals, never having seen it look so clear and colorful...
but i dont understand the lack of extras when there are so many they could have included.....not the least of which are the original openings, the opening "in color" bumper, etc.

The butchering of the "ben" episode will probably only offend purists like me,
but, i'm a purist, so consider me offended.

IMAGE and SHOUT FACTORY, where are you??? You have spoiled me so.

Re: Bewitched Season 3

At the very least, I hope Sony's got enough static from the the clipping of the 2 parter that they will not do it again for other 2 parters in upcoming seasons.

Re: Bewitched Season 3

As Kasey Rogers made her debut on BW in Season 3 I thought I would post this message here.

She has been battling throat cancer for some time now and had been doing quite well after going through many surgeries and treatments.

Today her writing partner Mark Wood (The Bewitched Cookbook) posted a message about her over at the premiere BW website HarpiesBizarre.com.

Here is the message:

Quote:
PLEASE! If she ever needed your love and prayers it is now.
Two nights ago Kasey started bleeding very badly from her mouth and trach.

At the hospital it happened again and she suffered cardiac arrest and a stroke.

They have so far been able to save her life but my love is in a coma and very very critical.

They have hopes that she can recover somewhat but it's still too soon to tell the extent of the damage.

Please pray for Kasey in this time of need. Please.

God bless you all.

Mark...

I felt that the more prayers and thoughts for her the better.

I had the opportunity to meet Ms. Rogers last summer at the BW house. She is a marvelous woman, very tiny and fragile but so strong as she was visiting with us just a day after having surgery and it was out in the hot sun.

Re: Bewitched Season 3

I'm certainly sending out prayers and good thoughts for her. Talented lady. And a GREAT Hitchcock villainess!

Thanks for the post, David. I haven't been reading any of the BW boards in years, so I would have missed it otherwise.

Re: Bewitched Season 3

The prayers are working as this is the newest update about Kasey:

Quote:
Some good news!! The decision was made to remove Kasey from the respirator to let nature take it's course, which they did yesterday morning. Happily, she is breathing perfectly on her own!! The damage from the stroke is apparently more than they had originally thought, but they won't know really how severe until she wakes up (she is still in the coma). They started feeding her yesterday, as well.

The doctor is determined that she will come out of this and says that she is very strong.
