Robocop Remake

Thread Starter
Chud.com has mentioned that a possible Robocop remake may be in the works. Paul Verhoeven supposedly wants nothing to do with it. The original robocop movie was pretty violent. I have a strange feeling that if this new movie does get made, the violence may be toned down a bit.

IMO, the more interesting question about the content of a remake is how satirical it would be.

Less than 20 years and already s remake? Atleast 30 I can understand... When is "Lord of the Rings" getting remade?
How much do you wanna bet they want to go for a PG-13?

Why remake Robocop, the original is pretty awesome and although its a bit dated, I absolutely love it. Not my favorite Verhoeven, but it's probably #2 behind Starship Troopers.

The possibility of a self-parodying Robocop film is why I have no desire to have a remake get made.

Why don't they just continue the storyline instead of retelling it?

To answer my own question, they lack any material to do that and instead choose to simply retread old ground.

And satire and self-parody are two different things. In fact, the first Robocop was indeed satirical.

I know that. And you know that. But Hollywood often doesn't, hence my fear of ending up with self-parody instead of true satire.

So why satirize a satire?

I don't understand why hollywood has to remake films when they are creativly firing on all cylinders.

"Snakes on a Plane" anyone?

Why??

Well, the guy was obviously asking just how if at all satirical a remake would be. This material has the potential to be relegated to typical apolitical action genre trash, like the Robocop sequels. Robocop isn't a satirical concept, it's the execution that is.

As soon as I am the lone winner in a multi-hundred million dollar MegaMillions jackpot, and then am able to triple or quadruple that by investing in high yield stocks that boom rather than bust.

[and for the record I plan on being more true to the books, so mine is a re-telling or a new adaptation from the original source material, and not technically a remake of Jackson's films]

They'll never get the violence and satire right, if they even use satire at all. It was a wonderful product reflecting the 80's. I wouldn't be surprised if they just make a PG-13 straight up action film. Ugh.
I would prefer they just make a sequel.
Better to give Verhoeven a decent script and let him make another classic.

robocop vs. predator!!!

It would be cool...for about 10 minutes. The agile and stealthy predator would easily win over a slow and clunky Robocop.

Much as I like robocop, a jungle hunter he ain't.

dead or alive the scripts coming with me!

I remember a comic that tied RoboCop in with Terminator. That could be cool.

I don't think a remake is needed for this. Another film would (could?) be good.

It was also a video game.

Robocop in Sean of the Dead II

Indeed.........."WHY"?

Oh I know why, remakes tend to, for the most part, do well at the Box Office because of built in name recognition....but aside from that....."WHY"?!?!

Id rather see an update of the Six Million Dollar man. If done right it would be sweet. Although if any idea is done right it would be sweet.
Of all the unnecessary and inane ideas for remakes these days, this one is close to the top of the list. I mean, is 1987 THAT long ago? Is the style of filmmaking back then so crude and outdated that we already need a new version? Absurd.
This is a stupid idea - right there with The Warriors remake
post #26 of 62
I feel the same way about the Halloween remake.....considering the style of the story what is the point? What would you improve? More gore? No...they will want it to be PG-13 and since the original never relied on gore to begin with what exactly would you do to "improve" the story? It was intentionally minimalistic to begin with...what's the damn point unless they fully intend to bastardize the story and make it something it was never intended to be, like...I don't know, a rollercoster ride action film, throw in a few pale creepy long black haired girls to creep around, aliens, ghosts, CGI, space ships, car chases....what?

Pointless as far as I can see.

I read somwere a while ago that they were going to mess with jaws. And replace the machanical shark with cgi. Instead of a remake.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, back up a second...Halloween remake!? What Halloween remake?

As for this, I don't know what to say other than Hollywood is truly, undeniably and without the slightest shred of doubt...out of ideas and completely imaginatively bankrupt.

I love, LOVE, LOVE Robocop and will die before I see this absurd remake. Let me guess, ED-209 and maybe even Robo himself will now be CGI creations, right? It will star a completely young cast from the WB and will be "hipper" and more "up to date" than the original, right? Riiiight.

Also, i'm not down with the idea of matching-up RoboCop with the Terminator, I never liked that concept, I mean just because they're both cyborgs doesn't automatically make them suitable for a match-up.

I remember back in the day that Kevin Smith was hired to write a 6MDM script. Nothing ever happened to it though.

As for Robocop, I can't really see the point in remaking it. It is what it is.

Carpenter himself said in an interview that it was going to get the go ahead....but THIS site claims that Malek Akkad has denied that it has gotten the absolute go ahead:
Quote:
For years, in between increasingly idiotic entries in the Halloween franchise, we've heard threats of a remake of John Carpenter's original classic. But just how close it to actually happening?

Not very, it seems. Dread Central tracked down Malek Akkad (with killer tenacity, no doubt) and asked about the remake. Akkad, whose family owns the rights to Michael Myers and his slaying ways, admitted that although it's been considered, they're focusing instead on a new installment of the Shatner-masked murder machine.

While this doesn't rule out the possibility of a remake happening some day, at least Akkad recognizes that the original holds up just fine for the moment. If only the makers of The Fog '05 had felt the same...

..good to know.
