Thank you for being a friend, Buena Vista.

Hopefully this means we can have the whole series by the end of next year!

That would be great! And hopefully The Golden Palace as well!

you know what I'm oddly wondering now?

Season 1 came out the same day Seinfeld's 1-3 came out, season 2 came out the same day Seinfeld 4, season 3 will be out the same day as Seinfeld's 5-6.... maybe we're going to finish Golden Girls and get season 7 on the same day we get Seinfeld's 8-9 NEXT November (assuming GG s5 comes out in May in time for Sein 7). Beginning and finishing the last day, how cute... plus that's two of my absolute favorite sitcoms.

If they follow the pattern, GP should be out February 2007, but don't quote me on that.

Wasn't that nine months ago? Just being a smartass...I know you meant 2006.

HAHA! I was so concerned that I would type 2005 in the title, that I didn't even notice it in the body of the paragraph! haha

the jury is still out if I want that or not. To me, GP was never in the same breath as the original, but since there were a few Dorothy appearences and there was an episode with Margaret Cho, I might get it still.

I'd say the box art looks pretty good. I still object to the fact that this is the epitomy of an ensemble cast but we have yet to see them together in a photo on any of the box covers. Plus no extras, bloopers, behind the scenes docs, etc. I'm thrilled to have what might be my favorite show ever but it's yet another classic sitcom being given the shaft just like M*A*S*H, All In The Family, etc.

Blanche (picking up dirty dishes after a party): "You know what I hate most after a party ?"

Rose: "Trying to find your underwear in the big pile ?"

Well, I hope that Buena Vista will release The Golden Palace. It was never as good as Girls, but it was still fun.

YAY! I am getting tired of re-watching the same 30 eppy's on Lifetime and trying to find something "new" on the first or second season sets.

SitcomsOnline.com has a review up: The episodes appear to vary in running times between 23:30 and 24:30, but I think that's normal; It was around this time that more commercials started to creep into network TV. The later seasons episodes should be about 23 minutes.

I can't say for sure but I agree that ep times do sometimes vary. GG did several 2-part episodes so perhaps some of the 2nd part episodes are missing the "last time on The Golden Girls" opening.

So far the show has been presented uncut so I'm assuming that's how these will be. And like Blanche, I'll be using "nature's credit card" to pay for this set. I never leave home without it. :b

Season five will be out on 9th May, and will apparently include some commentaries from Betty White.

If you read the press release just right, it sounds like Bea and Rue will join her on commentaries.
which episodes will have commentary on season 5? I could see Betty doing one for "72 Hours" since that's probably her most famous s5 episode
post #19 of 26
Don't know yet, or we'd post it as news.
My guess is that if all 3 ladies do commentaries then they would be for separate episodes.
Grrrrrr I can't believe it took them until Season 5 to realize they needed to do commentaries!

I hope they release a Seasons 1-7 complete package thing, and make one of the incentives to buying it be commentaries on Season 1-4 episodes... and a gag reel of course. I'm 100% positive that at least Betty White would be up to doing it. I'm sure Rue would too. I'm surprised they got Bea to do commentaries, that's a nice surprise.

I just started watching my Season 4 set this weekend. There is a heart-shaped decal on the front proclaiming: "New! See Quentin Tarantino as Elvis!" This has to be the lamest promotional ploy I've seen on a DVD yet. Tarantino is in an episode, as one of ten Elvis impersonators in the background, for a whopping four seconds of non-speaking screen-time. I believe it was his first on-screen appearance as an extra, back in 1988.

Season 4 was a little light on the famous guest stars, but you'd think if they were going use one of them to promote the set, they'd have chosen Bob Hope. He appears in one of the show's most remembered episodes.

At least Bob Hope is mentioned on the back cover, where it states "Enjoy special appearances by Bob Hope, Julio Iglesias and Quentin Tarantino!" Again, Tarantino! Special appearance? I highly doubt there are any fence-sitters who would be influenced by the promise of Tarantino's "appearance", no matter how special it may be. Pa-leeez.

Actually, I can see it having an unintended effect. Imagine giving a copy to your mother or grandmother for a gift. She sees that (cute, little, pink, heart-shaped) sticker and says, "Quentin Tarantino? Isn't he that sicko who makes all those disgusting movies? He was in Golden Girls? I don't remember seeing him. Maybe I'll just skip that episode."

That said, I do love this show, and Tarantino's movies, but such obvious pandering bugs the hell out of me.

Yes, it's a ridiculous things to promote. It's almost false advertising. That sticker should have been to promote the other REAL guest stars. Or better yet, just let the legacy of this show speak for itself. People are buying it because it's TGG, not because of guest stars and certainly not for the nonexistant extras.

Give me stories of St. Olaf, that's all I need.
I agree, The Golden Girls has a big following as it is, it doesn't need to hype the guest stars to sell.
Quentin Tarantino isn't even one of the BETTER Elvis impersonators in the "Sophia's Wedding, Part 1" episode.

I finished the Season 4 set last night. Originally, the final episode, "We're Outta Here", was broadcast as a one-hour episode. The DVD presents it in it's two-part, syndication version. I don't know if anything has been cut, but the combined running time is a bit over 48 minutes, with the inclusion of a new set of opening/closing credits (but no Part 1 "recap"). A few minutes were probably cut to accommodate the added credits. The episode is indicated on the menu as "Parts 1/2", with a single icon to select, which will then play them consecutively. There's no way to access the second part directly, without first selecting Part 1, then chapter skipping to it. The break in the episode comes just past the 24:00 mark. It is detectable by a rather abrupt "freeze frame" and an awkward fade-out, then augmented laugh track (not to mention the addition of "To be continued" onscreen.)

Another episode from Season 4, "Sophia's Weddding", was originally broadcast as a two-parter. It is presented properly on DVD, complete with Betty White's "Last time on The Golden Girls..." intro to the recap.

Season 3 also had a one-hour episode, but it was presented in its original form. For some odd reason, this hour-long episode is listed on the menu as "Golden Moments-Parts 1/2", again, accessed by a single icon. However, there are not two parts to this episode on the DVD. Only the syndication version was edited into two parts.

Seasons 1 and 2 had no two-part or hour-long episodes. Seasons 5 and 6 each had a two-parter and a one-hour episode. The final season had one two-parter and three one-hour episodes.

So far, Buena Vista has been good about presenting TGG with original episodes, with the possible exception of "We're Outta Here" from Season 4. Let's hope they get the rest of the series right...not to mention surprise us with a few extras along the way.
