At long last, Mission: Impossible! - Page 13

I got my Season Seven set on release day.  It was available at Best Buy at a rather pricey $39.99, but to complete a series and not have to hassle with online orders, it was worth it, I suppose.

It's really nice to have the full and completed series on DVD.  The picture quality of these remastered episodes remain eye-popping.  It's nice to see the excellent Barbara Anderson filling in for Lynda Day on many of these shows.

One thing I'd like to know-- I know that a lot of newer series are released in surround sound, but the original '60's "MI" is the only retro series that I know of that has surround sound to it. Why is that?

Star Trek TOS has surround sound. The initial release from 1999 had it and the other releases of TOS all had surround sound. The most obvious time is during the opening credits as the Enterprise swooshes by over your left and right shoulder. You can hear surround effects throughout the series. The current blu-ray release of Trek has it too with enhanced sound effects on the reworked episodes with CGI effect.

Could be M:I has surround because it's also from the same studio as Star Trek. I only have the first season of M:I so far and I had not noticed the surround effects. I'll pay attention for it!

The soundtracks to both MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE and STAR TREK have been remixed into 5.1 Surround Sound.

The DVD producers must have had access to the original sound elements in order to do the remixing.  They were indeed originally aired and produced with mono sound.

Both sound acceptable to me - perhaps an improvement over the mono - and not gimmicky nor fake sounding.

Please release the 2 ABC seasons now on dvd.   It would be nice to include a tribute to Peter Graves (the only link between the CBS & ABC series) who has just passed away.

The seventh and final season of the original Mission: Impossible TV series is released on Region 2 in the UK next Monday. Hopefully I might get it (and the seventh season of Hawaii Five-O) in the post on Saturday. If not, then it's likely going to be the middle of next week when they arrive.

Was the late 80's revival of Mission: Impossible shot on videotape, and if it was, would it be possible for CBS DVD to transfer the two seasons to HD? Do CBS DVD have the rights to the late 80's/early 90's Mission: Impossible TV series?

Every episode of every season looks and sounds better than it ever did.  The video portion is all nicely cleaned up, and the audio is converted to a 5.1 surround format.

Then when one mission required him to climb into the rafters in a dangerous way and he balked, his bosses at the IMF used that as an excuse to do the mission without him, then scaled back his involvement in subsequent missions for a while until they had Jim Phelps lined up to replace him as team leader. Then they simply didn't invite Dan back for any further missions starting with the second year.

actually it was the actor steven hill who played dan briggs and his replacement was the actor peter graves.

Here's a better one:

Dan Briggs was killed in a mission that to this day is still classified by the U.S. government, and which none of the other members (starting with Jim) were able to get any info about.

I think that an episode should have been done that partially explained what happened to Dan, with the rest of it about them carrying on regardless.

I think Dan went on to be a judge in New York. smile.gif

You know TV shows of that era rarely explained cast changes as we know, look at Bewitch's two Darrens. I agree it would have been nice they explained it.

FYI... the entire series is available in HD via NetFlix streaming.  Looks and sounds great.  Really enjoying the series.

TVShowsOnDVD posted a news article on their website yesterday for the ABC Mission: Impossible series, regarding it's first season:

Mission: Impossible 1988: The First Season (1988-89) - TVShowsOnDVD.com news article

The CBS Television Distribution Syndication Bible website still states that Mission: Impossible 1988 (aka New Mission: Impossible) hasn't been transferred into HD (the site was last updated on 30th August). This doesn't surprise me. I remember the show having a look like Dallas had from the 1986-87 season onwards. Not sure whether it could be remastered.

Glad that the first season DVD set consists of five discs. And love the front cover artwork.

Great news. Just preordered it at Amazon. Can't wait for this and the final year. I didn't think they would ever release those last 2 seasons from ABC. Oh happy day.

Has anyone gotten their MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE '88?  I ordered it from Amazon but it's not here yet.  I was just curious to hear some reviews.

Wow. So fast!  The 88 set was released a week ago today and Amazon still hasn't managed to get it to me.  Maybe today. It'll be great to have both seasons of this remake on DVD, complete, and next to the seven full seasons of the classic show.

May end up getting the Region 1 set of Mission: Impossible: The '88 TV Season, if CBS/P's Region 2 branch doesn't release the set.

Great that the second season is being released only three months after the first season.

My '88 Season set arrived today and I only had a chance to sample the opening to see what it looked and sounded like.

As I expected, since this show was put together in the '80s, it was post-edited in the video domain, so the image comes across quite soft.  Given the relative obscurity of this particular iteration of MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE, I wouldn't look for CBS/Paramount to do any high-def transfer attempts like they're doing for STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION.  I'm afraid this is as good as we'll ever see this one be.

Still, I'm happy to have these at all and am not complaining.  As I recall, my attempts to watch and/or tape the series when it aired were constantly thwarted by the scheduling whims of the networks.  It always seemed to be on against something else that required taping too.  So other than a soundtrack CD, I haven't had access to any of these episodes since 1988-89.

The episodes appear to be as-broadcast on ABC, with the ">) In Stereo Where Available(<" message displayed at the opening of some episodes.
