Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

The last episode of Mission: Impossible that I watched was The Submarine (Season Four), loved it, one of my fav episodes so far.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

I watched the first two Peter Graves episodes. They were okay. I guess nothing is ever said what became of Dan (killed, retired, transferred)...?

It was never address in series, and I think stephen hills leaving the show left such hard feeling is why his character was turned in to a villian in the god awful 1st mission impossible movie. It look like me and you are in the minority because we both like s1 and Dan. And for me S1 of mission impossible is my favority.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

I didn't like Dan when I first saw the episodes, but by the end of season one I liked him a lot.

I barely remember anything about the first MI movie except I didn't like it. I remember talking to my brother as to why he didn't like it and he had a simple explanation: "Jim would never betray the team."

I agree. (Plus the fact that I didn't know what the heck was happening most of the time in that first movie).

Carabimero,

I can't speak for what occurred to him in the series, but I have read that Hill left the series because the filming schedule conflicted with his faith. I believe it had something to do with his having to work on the sabbath; I'd have to check on that to be sure. Maybe some others could corroborate if they happen to know.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

Yes, it was for religious reasons that he was let go. It was a shame because he was terrific. I loved Peter Graves too but Mr.Briggs was MI to me when I watched them as a kid & Mr.Phelps was kinda like the 2nd Darren on Bewitched. Nothing wrong with him but I was used to the original.

If you google Steven Hill they have a good wikipedia paragraph on the MI situation (he was an orthodox Jew who wouldn't work on the sabbath).

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

Peter Graves is fine but Hill had an edge to him I like. Sometimes when hearing peter Graves's voice I have AIRPLANE flashbacks (or flashforwards!)and it's hard to take him seriously

LOL it not that bad for me, its just that stephen hill was the better actor and sometimes PG's acting can be very wooden,if he's not directed well. For me after s1 MI is all about the caper the team is about to pull off, the best episodes are the ones where not everything goes according to plan and the team has to scramble and improvise to make the mission a sucess.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

Yes a good caper story depends not on how brilliant the plan is, but how brilliant the improvisation is when things go wrong. Too often in MI stories the plan goes off without a hitch. I agree the better episodes, and better caper writing in general, is all about dealing with unforeseen glitches.

Just finished season two disc one and thought the last two episodes on disc one were stronger than the first two.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

I'm not much of a Star Trek fan, but I also kept thinking of Nimoy as Spock for the first few episodes but after a while, the Spock thoughts went away. I would also say "The Submarine" episode is my favourite from season 4.

I have always remembered him the most from the movie "The Mysterious Monsters", of which I have very fond memories. I like him a lot in M:I, even though his acting is wooden at times. He has really good chemistry with the rest of the cast. I did like Hill a little more, he came across as more serious.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

I'm a ways from the Nimoy run. Just getting my feet wet with Graves but man I am enjoying seeing these unaltered shows after all these years.

Re: Mission: Impossible Season 3

I don't see it mentioned in this thread, but in the Mission: Impossible Season 3 release, the runtime for both parts of "The Contender" is 45:30. Runtimes for all other episodes are around 50:30. What happened with those two episodes? Are they the syndicated versions?

Those episodes were aired in October 1968, during the presidential campaign between Nixon and Humphrey. I seem to recall a common practice at the time to air shorter versions of primetime shows, in order to accommodate 5 minute campaign ads that were inserted just before the top of the hour.

So if you want to recreate the authentic original experience of watching it on first airing, you could watch this afterward:
YouTube - Nixon - 1968 Election Ad
..though it might be too much of a downer!

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

I'm hoping the Season 5 boxset will be like the previous four boxsets - a cardboard outer case with three/four slipcass inside, and not like the Season 4 boxset of Hawaii Five-O. It seems all CBS/Paramount DVD boxsets are all going the same way - slimmer boxsets with the dull silver/grey discs inside. I didn't mind this new look style with the Mannix: Season 1 boxset, but it's getting boring now.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

I like having my CD tray full (5 disc player) and now that Paramount has decided to release nearly every series with the grey discs, they're getting harder to distinguish when I switch discs--which is rather annoying.

About as annoying as this "Iron Man" color scheme being used for the forum right now. Pretty awful looking.

I think it's kinda fun but if it's bothering you, you can change the colors by using the 'Skin Chooser' at the bottom of the page.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

I'm certain they haven't, but have CBS/Paramount released back cover artwork for the Mission: Impossible: Season 5 Region 1 set? I haven't seen anything on TVShowsOnDVD. They did it with the first four season boxsets.

My copy of the Season 5 set was shipped a couple of days ago. Can't wait to see the episodes.

No, the rear box art was never supplied. I believe it was an oversight, though.

I'm guessing he just resigned or simply stopped accepting missions. After all, everything that the IMF went on was voluntary. I doubt it would be that hard to just stop taking missions.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

After everything CBS/Par has done (Fugitive, M3S), I nearly still pre-ordered this! Can you berlieve it?

It's like a habit with me. A drug.

My name is Carab, and I'm a pre-order-aholic.

My theory is that Dan Briggs was an Orthodox Jew, and that the IMF required him to work on the Sabbath too many times and he constantly complained about it (having originally been told that it wouldn't be a problem). Then when one mission required him to climb into the rafters in a dangerous way and he balked, his bosses at the IMF used that as an excuse to do the mission without him, then scaled back his involvement in subsequent missions for a while until they had Jim Phelps lined up to replace him as team leader. Then they simply didn't invite Dan back for any further missions starting with the second year.

When I first got season one I had never seen those episodes with hill and I was like what the hell with hill. By the end of the season I was sad to see him go.

Yeah me too , in fact (I know its a minority oppion) S1 is my favorite season of MI. I liked steven hill and wish there could have been someway to workout his reglious commitments and shooting schedule , but atleast there are two more season with martin landau.

Agreed. Martin Landau was something else in that series and him leaving with a blow. Granted, the show didn't start sucking, but there's just something about having Landau as part of the cast that made it a lot more....well, he was one of the best things about it. It's not easy to replicate.

That said, Nimoy did a good job. He's starting to grow on me.

Now doing that might have been a great idea. It would get the youngfolk who saw the movies to see the show as well-it would be expensive, but it might get them to appreciate the original show along with the movies. Even better, a release of the movies with one episode in them as part of the extras package.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

Growing up I had only known Peter Graves in the roll, I didnt expect to like Steven Hill, but he was much better as it turned out. And I prefer him to Graves. It's been mentioned here before, Graves acting style is wooden at times.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

It's not confirmation news about Seasons 6 & 7 of Mission: Impossible on DVD, but I thought I'd share it with people on here. The following was posted on a Mission: Impossible (the original TV series) website a few weeks ago:

"Lars-Erik Wikberg has written to say that he has "got information that season 6 will (preliminary) be released in Scandinavia in April 2009. That means for sure that it also will be released about the same time in other region 2 countries." Paramount's office in Scandinavia have also told him: "Most likely will both season 6 and 7 of Mission Impossible be released during the first half of 2009". He says that "Paramount's Swedish website ... have now the first facts for the sixth season there. So the preliminary information about release in April is for sure correct."

Good to know. And then hopefully New Mission: Impossible? That was the one I watched as a kid, and I'm looking forward to revisiting it.
