Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

Just noticed that Season 3 is now available for preorder at Amazon with a street date of November 20, 2007. Great news.

Excellent, I love the first 2 seasons, this will be a definite buy

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

I'm in for S3 as well. If more are released, I'm not sure about S4 since the show lost IMO 2 major players, Martin Landau and Barbara Bain, after S3.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

Less than a week till season 3 is released and I cannot wait. Unfortunately it (like the first two) will probably not be in any b&m ads nor on their shelves. At least the price will be quite reasonable with the 20% off sales at DD & DVDPlanet. I wish they'd announce Season 4 soon. I hope they won't quit because Landau/Bain's episodes are done. The next 4 seasons are still definitely on my to buy list.

I really have never seen too many episodes from seasons 4-7 as I stopped watching the show when the cast changed. I would pick them up if Paramount releases them however. How do the later episodes compare? One thing they had going for them is they really got some gorgeous replacements for Bain with Leslie Ann Warren, Lynda Day and Barbara Anderson. Maybe not as good but great to look at.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

If they'd kept Lee Meriweather after Season 4, Mission might have run well into the late 70s.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

Looking forward to seeing the Barbara Anderson episodes for the first time, she is an excellent actor on Ironside, anyone know what she is up to today?

Looks as if she may have retired from acting...her last credit on IMDB is The Return of Ironside in 1993.

I am still working through Season 2 of Mission: Impossible and can't wait to dive right into Season 3. The Graves/Landau/Bain/Morris/Lupus team is tops in my book, and I'm ready for more!

Where is season 3? Couldn't find it in the stores.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

I picked mine up during lunch at Best Buy...there were a couple sets there. Where were you looking?

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

The following stores in northern Jersey: Best Buy, FYE, Saturday Matinee, 2 Borders, Coconuts and CD world. Nobody had a copy.

Oops... forgot Wal-Mart. Not there either.

Update: wife just found a copy at a different Best Buy.

I got mine at Shopko.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

Got mine at Best Buy, but they still had them on the cart, along with everything else released today. It was 1030, guess thats not enough time to expect them on the shelf.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

I didn't get out to check but I know for the previous 2 sets they were in zero ads & on zero shelves where I live. We have CC, Wal Mart, K Mart, Sam's, Target, etc... I bought season three as soon as I woke up from Deep Discount for $27.91 shipped.

Shipped on Wednesday media mail & arrived Monday. Record time especially over Thanksgiving weekend. Got it for a record low price & didn't have to wait as long as a lot of DD orders take.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

No comments on Season Three?

I got it as a Christmas present but haven't yet delved in. Usually, if there's nothing posted around here, that's a good sign that there's nothing wrong. People don't usually post if DVDs are as expected.

I never thought of it that way but it's true. Once you get past the release of a show's first season and the initial excitement of the show coming out, no news is usually good news.

Harry

I had to take mine back 4 times because disc 5 and/or 7 were scratched every time! I finally got one that was OK.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

It's sad but seemingly true that for most releases, if there are problems then there are lots of posts. If all goes well, people generally remain quiet and satisfied I supposed.

So, much like in the media, it's the bad news that rises to the surface, not the good news.

I just gave a quick llok at the playing surface of all seven discs, and they look OK visually.

Well it is Mission's best year, just barely edging the almost as good Season 2 and quite a bit better than the somewhat erratic Season 1.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

Well, maybe I've discovered something about the new set then.

With both seasons one and two, the opening credit sequence was "cleaned up". Instead of rolling film with its natural grain, the way it appeared on TV, the DVD used cleaned up still frames, timed to match up with the original sequence. Take a look at each name in seasons one and two, and notice that the grain in the image of the star freezes.

Now look at season three (I've only checked disc four as a random sample). When the star's picture appears, notice that the film grain dances around the way it's supposed to, making it more natural in appearance.

I'm happy about this, as the freeze frame video technique always bothered me a bit.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

And now that I've had a chance to look at an episode or two, I can report that the closing credits on Season Three appear to be of the altered variety. Seasons One and Two both were accurate to the original aired version with the Desilu logo, but season three (which, as I recall may have had both Desilu and Paramount logos originally) has a generic MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE screen with a copyright date (screen included below), followed by a new CBS/Paramount logo.

Great observation, Harry. I'll have to look more closely at that tonight. The main thing I noticed was that the shot for Barbara Bain is more flattering in S3 when compared with S1-2.

The last episode I watched on this set was "The Execution" and though quite riveting, I'm not sure I would rate it as highly as the author of the companion guide to M:I. For one thing, writer William Read Woodfield, who had prior written a book focusing on a death row inmate, "stacks the deck" rather strongly where his views on capital punishment are concerned.

A bit of a disagreement on the season by season quality thing. I still prefer S1 as it just seems more stylish and less sluggish where pacing is concerned. I especially enjoyed how missions were often tailored to 2 or 3 individuals (excepting Briggs). Steven Hill's somewhat stodgy persona nonwithstanding, I've still not seen anything that quite lives up to "Operation: Rogosh", "A Spool There Was" and "The Carriers" (though S2's "The Town" and "The Seal" were quite spiffy). But I must confess I'm greatly looking forward to "The Mind of Stefan Miklos" in S3.

Paramount has announced that season 4 is being released in May.
Seasons 1-3 are great quality transfers,I hope they release the whole
series.

our Retro TV Network are running the Nimoy episodes. It's pretty hilarious when he tries to get too hip in his cover. "Spock the Swinger"

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

Can someone answer a question for me? After the departure of Landau and Bain, the producers tried a lot of name actresses onscreen to fill in Cinnamon Carter's place. Among them were Anne Francis, Barbara Luna and mostly Lee Meriwether, who played "Tracey" in eight episodes in the fourth year. I've always wondered why Ms. Meriwether wasn't chosen as a full-time cast member- was it a question of money? Considering she had already made a name for herself in TV, her name value would've helped in the long run, as opposed to Season Five's Lesley Ann Warren (nothing against Ms. Warren, but I felt she seemed too young to play an IMF agent- on the other hand Lynda Day George was only two years older and yet she seemed far more worldly and sophisticated, making her a better Bain replacement on the show).

So, does anyone why the producers (and CBS) chose Ms. Warren over Lee Meriwether?

Nimoy has admitted he felt slightly miscast on the show. In any event, Season 4 may be worth considering if only for the 3-part episode "The Falcon" (with Noel Harrison), which still has plenty of suspense, as well as a very elegant, fairy-tale feel.
