Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

I'm really surprised that no one has posted this good news yet, here at HTF, but season 2 of M:I is on its way. TVShowsonDVD.com story:

http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=6949

That's a reasonably good turnaround time by Paramount for season 2, roughly 6 months from the release of season 1. Sold!!!

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

I happy to see that season will be coming out in june now i can start to buy
seasons of mission impossible . did you know that the creator of mission
impossible bruce geller also was the creator of mannix

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

Bruce Geller was given a raw deal by Paramount though, because for continuing to go overbudget on Mission: Impossible he was thrown off the Paramount lot during the 1970-1971 season. The most interesting bit of trivia though is that Geller's hand which lit the fuse at the beginning of each MIssion episode was replaced by someone else's hand!

So he then made TV movies for the next several years.
Bruce Geller and his wife Jeanette died in a private plane crash that he piloted in 1978.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

I am so there. But after Season 3 (when Bruce Geller and the Landaus left), I'm cutting bait.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

Great news! I'll be buying all of the original CBS seasons & the 2 ABC ones if they're all eventually made. Hopefully season 3 will come out around 5-6 months later which'd be just in time for the '07 holiday season.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

I found the 1st-season to be grandly entertaining, and I'm looking forward to the follow-up in June. I don't have any cut-off mark regarding seasons. I'll just keep getting M:I sets, as long as I enjoy them. Which, may very well continue all the way to the end of the series.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

My wife and I are looking forward to season two and will wrap it up with season 3 when Martin Landau and Barbara Bain left the show after that season....although season 4 might be worth it just for "Submarine".

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

I'm both thrilled and surprised at the announcement. Thrilled because these eps were all new to me and I thoroughly enjoyed Season 1. Surprised because of the VERY low profile release of the first set. I did not see it on the shelf of even one brick and mortar store which was surprising given that it was released during the holiday season. Even on line, DVD Planet, had it on back order until January. I ended up getting mine from another e-tailer using the Google Check out discount.

Yesterday, I checked for news of a pre-release on Amazon, and was surprised to see that Season 1, shows 4 to 6 WEEKS estimated ship time, which suggest that even Amazon isn't carrying it in stock.

I thought this was all going to lead to another situation of not enough sales of S1 to justify an S2 release. So I am MOST pleasantly surprised that this is coming available, AND in such a timely manner. I"m confused however as to why the release of S1 was so low key. How can people buy it, if they can't find it? Go figure...

In any case...KUDOS to Paramount for the impending release of S2!

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

Ollie,

I didn't have any problem ordering Ml S1 from Amazon back when it was released so it's strange that it's not more readily available online. Weird.

Great news about MI S2. Can't wait. I'll also have to decide after S3 to continue with this one. If I remember, I wasn't as excited about the show after S3. Didn't Leonard Nimoy replace Martin Landau's role in S4? I thought he did a good job. He just happened to have to replace,IMO, an actor that was "made" for that part in Landau. Who replaced Barbara in S4? Was it Lynda Day George?

I believe there was a bunch of One shots, then Barbara Anderson took it over for a year, finally to be replaced by Lynda day George

As far as the beautiful ladies of the original Mission: Impossible series, after Barbara Bain left, she was replaced by Lee Meriweather in a 3-part story and the guest appearances by several actresses followed during the 1969-1970 season.

Lesley Ann Warren (who started on TV as a teenage Cindarella in 1965) became a regular cast member in 1970-1971, but her character was too young to take on the more mature parts (including an old woman in one episode)!

Lynda Day George (who played Lisa Casey) joined the show at the start of the 6th season in 1971. When Lynda became pregnant and went on maternity leave early in the 7th and final season in 1972, she was temporarily replaced by Barbara Anderson in only 7 episodes (as Mimi Davis). Lynda was still on the show for a period before giving birth, as she was filmed wearing oversized clothing, behind kitchen counters, etc.
She came back to the show soon enough and stayed until the end.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

I also, am done after season 3. I love Nimoy, and Star Trek, but he was HORRID, on M:I!

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

I thought Leonard Nimoy was just fine as Paris on Mission: Impossible. His joining the cast as Rollin's replacement, was so he could be the new master of disguise -- an opportunity for him to expand his range as a dramatic actor.

Nimoy quit that show after 2 years, but at least he got to work with Lesley Anne Warren.

By the way, I finally bought the first season set today and it's as enjoyable as I remember. The highlight of the pilot episode is seeing Barbara Bain in a towel.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

I also think Leonard Nimoy did a great job as Paris - the problems in those years didn't come fom him. They were more about cost-cutting, Douglas Cramer's management and not having a full-on leading lady for an entire season. They should've kept Lee Meriweather as a regular. The leading ladies were fun as long as you got to see them in different roles each week - seeing different actresses doing different roles each week wasn't as interesting. Still, season four has a lot of terrific episodes and I really do hope that in the end they'll release all seven seasons. I'd buy all of them in a heartbeat.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

I agree, I don't think Nimoy was at all bad in Mission.

The lack of a leading lady did harm the show though.Lee Merirwether should have got the role. I belive Anne Francis who guested in one episode was considered & would have been ideal.Lesley Ann Warren never really clicked.

I do hope S2 sells enough to allow for further releases.I would love to get S3 which had the classic episodes

The Mercenaries- probably the best remembered Mission of all
The Mind of Stefan Miklos - very clever
The Execution - undoubtly the most harrowing of all, surprised it got past the censors and a great performance from Landau
The Contender & The Bunker two excellent 2 parters .

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

I'm very pleased that Paramount is continuing the series and will definitely be purchasing this and S3. Outside of Star Trek, I don't care for Leonard Nimoy at all so S4 is out for me and will probably just rent it.

It doesn't help subsequent seasons that William Read Woodfield and Alan Balter left early in S3 following a huge argument they had with Geller over a trivial matter. According to the M:I Companion book author, they understood the M:I show and its formula better than anyone.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

Did anyone notice CBS Video's mistake duplicating the main menu screen of Discs 3 & 4? The photo of Greg Morris they used appears to be from the show's final season (1972-73), when Greg had a bigger fro!

And a bigger collar and tie, and possibly a double-knit jacket, though I could be over-imagining on that last detail!

You really can't tell about his clothing from that DVD photo, but it looks like he's wearing an ordinary suit.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

Just saw The Ransom. Kinda surprised by the premise. How does a hood and a close friend of Briggs appear to know what Briggs does if the I:M force is a secret?

It's fun to watch these! What's also fun is seeing actors and extras on the Desilu lot that switch between M:I and Star Trek. And also what's interesting is how two shows filmed at the same time age so differently. Obviously M:I will look like 1966, cars, clothes and cars date the show. Star Trek actually ages much better since everything is manufactured for the show.

Actually it's just the opposite: Star Trek dates more poorly because the future depicted looks very quaint and primitive for what is supposed to be the 22nd century, while even 1980s / early 1990s technology representing the 23rd century The Next Generation series far surpasses it.

What we have in 21st century reality puts both works of fiction to shame.

And here i thought TNG looks dated because of it 80s mauve color scheme on the ship. Even the alien clothes have an 80s look and feel to it with shoulder pads for the female clothing.
Getting back to M:I i have had my second season on pre-order for some time on Amazon. Cant wait!

maybe the hood has worked for I:M force? I'd always heard stories about how the CIA would hire mafia hitmen to eliminate targets.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

Thanks Cory3rd. Seems like a reasonable backstory. Briggs and the hood obviously knew each other when they meet in the poolhall.

Funny to see Eddy Paskey in this episode and the pilot. He's in almost every Star Trek in the background. Plus virtually all the guest actors in this episode was in Star Trek!

As for how the M:I and Star Trek shows have aged, I was trying to say that M:I obviously can't hide a 1966 sedan and clothes and hairstyles. Obviously, Star Trek doesn't look like it was filmed recently. It does have clothing, most hair styles (except Shatner) and a look that makes it harder to nail when it was filmed. Could have been 1970! The only show that gives it away is Assignment: Earth.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

Classic Trek was never explicitly stated as taking place in the 23rd century until the movie era. (TNG was 24th century from the beginning.) As for the tech being dated, if anybody has a cell phone that can call up someone in orbit or on the moon, or a laptop that can scan for lifeforms, I'd like to see it! Nobody has made a working Phaser or warp drive yet, have they?

A lot of men had long hair in 1970, but not as many when Assignment: Earth was filmed in 1967.
It's easy to tell the difference. Styles changed a LOT in just those few years....particularly with women's fashions.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

I watched "The Confession" yesterday, a very enjoyable episode written by Woodfield and Balter. Those two really had the formula for the "M:I" series nailed as most of my favorites in S1 were written by this team. One production flaw I could see in "Confession" was in using character actor Kent Smith as the "assasinated" senator. I just knew from the painting of Smith that he was going to show up in the flesh at the end of the show. They should have used a lower profile bit player here and used Kent Smith as the "replacement".

Looking forward to two S1's apparent high water mark entries: "Action!" and "The Train". And of course, S2!

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

A few weeks ago, I discovered that a favorite program from the 60's was on DVD. As I have a hearing problem, I would prefer to have subtitles. The US set has only "closed Captions". I hope in future sets, they will have subtitles. My question is does the english PAL region 2 have English subtitles? The german set does but is more expensive than the UK set. I've noted the the Australia set also has subtitles. While my 2 DVD players (XORO and Scott) supports Closed Captions, I don't think any TVs sold in region 2 with NTSC supports Closed Captions
