Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

Bob, thanks for the Review link. Man, I can't wait for this one! This is one of the more rare "wait-for's" that have me checking my mail a couple of times/day

For those out there that are younger than the 'Boomers on this forum, this series is 100 times better than the MI theatrical movies, IMO. I haven't seen these since the early 80's so the wait's going to make it all the more of a 'ing good time viewing this set for me. I'll savor each ep like a fine wine Only one question remains: Will it sell enough for further season's releases? Only time will tell but I figure we'll get at least 3 seasons of releases from this series.

I really do hope that it does sell well, Jeff, and I'm very pleased that Paramount is starting with season 1 since Steven Hill was only in the first season. It certainly would have been "safer" for Paramount to start with the Peter Graves episodes. But I was disappointed to see that none of the big three retailers (Best Buy, Circuit City, Target) had this listed as part of their "release week" sales. It's the old story . . . out of sight, out of mind. I'm sure there are many boomers who would love to have this series on DVD, but if you don't even know that it's released, you'd have to stumble over it at your local retailer to know that it's available. Not everyone in the target market for this set uses the internet for their TV-on-DVD purchases. The fact that it's being released during the Christmas buying season should help it though, and I'd guess that we'll see more than just season 1.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

Very encouraging review! I placed my order with Amazon for this 'blind buy' and once I read how great the video quality was, to the extent that the DVDTalk reviewer commented on how the show looks like a "contemporary production with a 60s retro feel", well I'm primed. I've always liked Lalo Schifrin as a composer and I'm sure that with the high production values already present in the series, it's going to be great viewing. My wife has never heard of this series but it will hold strong appeal for her as she once tried out for the U.S. Secret Service.

I don't know how far I'd go with this series, but in all likelihood, I'd at least collect seasons 1-3 just for Martin Landau. At any rate, I recently received my MI companion book, so I'm all set to revel in 60s era spy drama.

I was also very pleased to read that there is no music accompanying the menus. This is one of my little pet peeves with TV on DVD. As famous as the MI theme is, I'm quite surprised (and relieved) that they chose to leave the title theme off.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

Mike,

We guarantee this one for you and your wife. You all will be amazed how good this one stands the test of time, and after seeing the clips on the recent "Perry Mason" V2 preview chapter, you'll be blown away by the xfr quality of this one. The DVDTalk review got this one dead-center accurate. If anything, I'd have given it 5 stars in most catagories, particularly in content and xfr. I'd guess that most of us that remember viewing MI when it originally aired would prefer the 1st 3 seasons of the series. I also wished Steven Hill had stayed in the cast for S2 but Peter Graves did a great job in stepping into the team leader role, IMO. You all will love the originality of these early season's scripts and how the MI team transitions to "Plan B" scenarios before the viewer realizes it.

I'm a little envious about anyone that hasn't seen this series previously But, I have the great memories of watching this one with Dad. We never missed this one.

Bob, that surprises me that this one wasn't included in the week's releases at Best Buy. I don't go to my local BB often but I'd considered getting this on locally to skip the shipping time. I rarely get any DVD at a local store. I guess the online shoppers don't represent the majority in DVD sales. Maybe the "what if I need to exchange a defective DVD" scenario keeps more consumers from buying online, or the credit card online security concerns.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

I just ordered mine from Amazon. About $34, and that beats Best Buy's price by $10.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

Jeff-

I had recently bought some DVDs for the first time via Amazon and the Get Smart set from Time-Life. Like you said, I don't trust CC security and the returns issue. The other reason I don't buy on-line is that I can't pick the set I want in the shelf, I look for dents and scuffs. The sets I got from Amazon had some dents and the Get Smart set had a crease. How do you guys deal with it?

As for M:I, I too have fond memories of it and look forward to adding it to my collection. It would be interesting to find out why Martin Landau's contract said he had to be a special guest star rather then a regular.

He wasn't originally supposed to appear in every episode, from what I recall. But he was so good and so integral to the show that he did become a regular.

Seasons 1-3 were the classics and this was probably another show that went a bit too long. Once they started going after domestic criminals instead of overthrowing foreign governments was when I stopped watching. Although I might pick up those seasons if Paramount goes that far just for Lesley Ann Warren, Barbara Anderson and Lynda Day.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

Bought mine from Amazon also so Hopefully I'll get them tonight so I can go for my weekly visit to my parents house, we usually watch older movies or mostly older TV Series. This will be a surprise to my Mom she liked the show very much.
CBS would've been wiser to get this on the Shelf opposite MI3 to maximise exposure. I hope we get more, I even Liked Nimoy's Turn as Paris in later shows. I think he replaced Peter Lupus if I remember correctly. I hope CBS has realistic expectations for this set, and it , along With Rawhide and Have Gun will be allowed to continue.

Amen to the two westerns you cited. Nimoy was a replacement for Landau--Peter Lupus stayed the course for the entire series run.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

The recent posts about this set are leaving me greatly encouraged about my purchase of this set.

I chanced a "blind buy" on this one because I got a great price on DVDPlanet. I got it for $24.86 w/free shipping. ($34.86 - $10 Google discount + FREE Shipping).

I've never seen any of the episodes, and RARELY do blind buys. If in doubt, I usually Netflix at least one disc first.

I'm greatly encouraged by the rave reviews and can't wait to get my set.

I'm a big fan of the "spy/action" genre. I own all the sets of Alias, 24, and Femme Nikita, as well as the MI movies.

I'm really curious to see how a 60's spy drama contrasts with those of the modern era.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

Ollie, "take it to the bank"....you'll like this series. This one's a no-risk blind-buy. I've seen them when originally aired but rarely since then, so it'll be somewhat of a "one-eye" buy for me.

One thing I noticed is you can actually SEE the ending credit graphic! Most of the time it looked like white text on an extremely dark background. Now you can actually see a clear picture and text, just like it's original run

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

I've been to a couple of Targets, Best Buys, and Circuit Citys, with no luck in finding the set. I eventually found a copy at a Wal-Mart. Anyone else having trouble finding this retail?

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

Yes, I made a beeline to my local Best Buy store yesterday, and was surprised that they did 'not' have it. So I ventured over to Suncoast, and they only had three copies of it. Only two left, after I purchased mine. Amazing that such a terrific series and such a terrific dvd-set seems to be having this rather low-key debut. It's a knockout of a set, quality-wise. I've already breezed through the first three episodes. My only annoyance is that the original airdates of the individual episodes are not listed. It's a minor qualm, but I always like that kind of info.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

I'm probably going to wait until January before buying this set, I don't have enough money for it right now and there's a few sets I want more. I'm really looking forward to watching this show.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

I rarely buy TV on DVD however, Mission: Impossible is a “must-have” for me. I just finished watching the first two episodes and it is even better than I remember from back in the day.

Ian, you said it You'll love this series on DVD.

Bert, I also prefer the original airdates included. Good to know ahead of time before getting the set in the mail.

Ron, as we M:I fanatics have mentioned, this set's one of those "absolute-guarantee's" out there for your collection.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

Called the other two Wal-Marts after the one I visited did not have this set.
Clerk told me they had sold out and this was Tuesday @ Noon. He was just stocking the shelves. A different Wal-Mart stated it was not due out until the following Tuesday. Went to Sam's Wednesday evening and found about 15 copies and they were priced at $32.84. Best price I could find in town.

Looked at the first episode last evening and was totally blown away by the color, detail and clarity. Sound mix was pretty potent, also. Haven't seen these since their original run.

Great show.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

For all intents and purposes a blind buy (although I do remember watching this a couple of times when young), and absolutely loving Mission Impossible so far.

With Get Smart, the Alias box, the new Bond sets, and this, if you're a fan of the spy genre there is plenty to keep you busy this month!

I bought that book about 15 years ago when it first came out, and it's one of my favorites!
I wish I brought it to California when I came here in 2002.

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

I just got my set in the mail. What's with the design of the title on the cover and side. It's not anywhere near what it's supposed to look like. Only the back cover has it right. And it's "the first television season"? As opposed to what, radio?

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

Many people don't even realize the franchise started on TV. The marketing folks probably wanted to differentiate the product as much as possible from the movie series.

Try it in reverse: "The first television season" (and the only one with Steven Hill) as opposed to the first season to feature Peter Graves or the first season of the late 1980s Mission: Impossible series.

A lot of fans of the original series may have been unaware that Dan Briggs was the original head of the Impossible Missions Force, and this DVD set will bring it to their attention.

Does anyone have any insights as to why this isn't being better distributed and displayed, especially given that it's a studio release and not an independent one? I would think that Paramount would want to capitalize on the tie-in to the movies. There's a prominent display of MI-III DVD's at every retailer I've visited in recent weeks.

If the decision on whether or not to release subsequent seasons is going to be dependent on sales of the first season. That cause is clearly NOT helped, when the general public doesn't even know it's available.

This was a blind buy for me, and I've been pleased with what I've seen so far. I'd really like to collect the rest of the series. I'm concerned about the liklihood of being able to do so given the near non-existent distribution of the set among the major brick and mortar retailers.

Thoughts?

Re: At long last, Mission: Impossible!

I saw plenty of copies at Sam's, and at a good price $32 or so. But someone else posted they had seen it their also. I am keeping away from BB and CC until after Christmas. I hate the higher prices, yea, i saw them jacking the DVD prices up last Christmas at BB, and of course the crowds. Anyway, is it not being stocked, or just not enough copies in store?

There's a movie series? I'm only half kidding. I saw some of the first movie and it was a complete POS which had no relation to what MI was about whatsoever and Tom Cruise is about as believable in the role as Danny Devito would be. I seriously doubt anyone who likes the movies would have any interest in the series and vice versa.
