Batman Begins (Two-Disc Special Edition)

I just watched the single-disc edition.

Whoah.

This is the mother of all reference DVDs. And one think I really like is that it's even shot with anamorphic lenses, unlike other Super35 favorites. Christopher Nolan says he likes as little grain as possible and boy does it show. I know you really can't say "this looks like high-def", but in the back of my mind I couldn't help wondering how on earth an HD transfer could reveal any more detail (I know, I know it can).

The movie was great as well (hadn't seen it at the cinema).

Can't wait to get my hands on this! My fave movie of the year and I didn't really like any of the other Batman movies.

What's this I hear about the SE being a limited release???
It's probably limited to about 10 million copies

Maybe it'll be sort of like the original Fight Club DVD. It'll be available as two disc, then go out of print, then eventually come back in print (maybe when the sequel comes out). Either way, the one disc will probably be available for years.

Don't forget the inevitable box set after they've done about two or three more movies.

Found a nice little interview with Christopher Nolan on DVD commentaries and why Batman Begins doesn't have one.

Quote:
DVDX: There is no director's commentary included in the Batman Begins Deluxe Edition package. Is there an obvious reason for that?
NOLAN: I'm curious as to what you think the obvious reason is.

DVDX: Well, maybe there'll be another edition six months down the line!
NOLAN: To be honest, that's not my take on it. You never know. The truth is, I find director's commentaries a very difficult thing to do right when you finish a film and you haven't got any perspective on it yet. Because of DVD production lead time, very often you have to do a commentary before the film has even come out. Until the film has found its audience and you've got a little perspective on what you've done, I don't think I've got a lot to say for a commentary that I can't say better in documentary form.

DVDX: Well, if I can be honest, I'm a little surprised to hear that--you've done a commentary track for every one of your features.
NOLAN: If Warner had forced me to do a commentary, I would have done it. But the truth is I like to get perspective on things and with the others films, I've been able to take a little time between finishing the film and producing material for the DVD. I don't think people realize quite how hard it is to watch a film in real time and talk the audience through it without defaulting to techno-speak or just talking about what we did on set. With every DVD I've done, I've tried to not just do a straight commentary but rather find a way to do something different with it.

Ahhh, sweet sweet anamorphic Panavison. The REAL 2.35!

Nolan rocks!

Can't imagine watching this foolscreen.

His reason for no commentary makes sense to me. It does sound like he expects another release in the future with a commentary.

His reasons are pretty much along the lines of why I suspected there was no commentary. I know if I was a director, I would be resistant to doing commentary before my film was even released to theaters
post #71 of 436
It reminds me of the "Incredibles" commentary with Brad Bird, and him talking about how weird it was talking about a film which they didn't know how it would be doing in the box office, since it was done before the film is released.

His reason is dead on what a commentary should be about: perspective. The most entertaining commentaries I've listened to are usually done many years after the film has been completed and run it's course. The director, writer, or actor can then reflect back on the experience and what kind of impact the film had. In the case of Batman Begins maybe a proper commentary can be done after all the sequels have been done and seen.
Nolan's reasoning is good. I can live without a commentary regardless, but I like finding out WHY he chose not to record one.
Does anyone know if the Canadian release for Batman Begins will have bilingual packaging? I hope not . . .
I understand the desire to have perspective and distance for a commentary, but by definition that would have to be included in some future release.

Meanwhile, it couldn't have hurt to do a "fresh memory" commentary for this release, couldn't it?
I wonder why Batman Begins or the other Batman movies for that matter aren't listed on the "schedule of upcoming DVD releases" stickied at the top of this forum?
Sounds great, can someone lead me to the differances between the editions?
The UK based importer I use is saying today that Warner have pulled the plug on production of the 2 disk SE with comic. I will not name them as I know not allowed to name release breakers here, and they have already despatched the DVDs they have. They have stopped taking orders and other UK based importers also saying sold out.

I don't know if anyone in US can confirm or know Warner's reason for this.

May be a reason to buy now.

Malcolm I came across something similar:

also notice what happened with this title:

I haven't ordered my copy yet, guess its too late now anyways but I'm not sure I'll get the single disc version now...out of protest

EDIT: I ordered the R3 so lets hope I can still get it....I'm starting to think that maybe its all a ploy from WB to boost sales of the 2discer?

Well, he does say that he feels that those thoughts would be better served in documentary format, rather than as a commentary.

Wow, what does it take to get a 5 star for video? Doesn't sound like this transfer deserved anything less then a perfect 5. Where does it lose the 1/2??
I just exchanged my single disk for the 2 disk once I saw the extras for this teriffic film. Thanks for the review and it is always nice to see screen images.

Perfection.

While the transfer is excellent, I don't believe it is among the top 2 or 3 in my collection. Same with the audio portion. A terrific track, but it's not the first disc I'd run to in an attempt to show off my system.

That said, it is in fact, near perfect.

Any news on whether or not Canadians will have to suffer through more bilingual packaging for this DVD? I really hope I can avoid seeing Batman: Le Commencement on the cover art with a poor french translation of Roger Ebert's english review.
I'm picking this one up regardless, but this one has Double Dip written all over it (if not Triple Dip). The Special Features seem pretty weak, IMHO -- no deleted scenes or commentary of any kind, and just a group of short featurettes like some of Warner's recent DVDs.
The only way I'll double dip on this title on DVD is if they release a "director's cut". I won't upgrade just for more extras, since the picture and sound are quite highly rated. Barring a different cut of the film, the next time I upgrade Batman Begins will be on Blu-Ray

Heads up for those content with the single disc addition. It comes with two episodes of "The Batman" at Wal-Mart (in Canada at least). The bonus disc as its own DVD case and artwork.
Agreed with Steve... great DVD, but would it have killed them to add a DTS track? The Burton Batman Box (say that 5 times fast) has DTS, but Warner keeps it off BB? I am assuming that they needed the movie disc to be the same on the single disc edition offered to rental stores, making room for Quebec dubbing and the oh-so-hilarious Tankman bit? I am loving this disc, but I'm so hungry for the expanded sound of DTS, especially during the bat swarm scenes. Maybe I'm spoiled. LAND OF THE DEAD has a terrific and intense DTS track along with many other recent Universal DVDs. DTS would have made BATMAN BEGINS a definitive demo disc.

Is that the regular edition or the deluxe edition? And which episodes?

That is the regular edition, the one with only one disc. Not sure which episodes they are.
