there was plenty to be had at the best buy i was in today.
both the fancy cover and the normal cover.
i think it's another of those internet rumors running rampant.

Gear mentioned in this thread:

Batman Begins (Two-Disc Special Edition)

if it originated on the IGN boards, it's more than likely bullshit. The Best Buy here out by the Portland Airport, at about 7:30pm on release day, had MORE 2-discers than 1 discers.
my thought is that there is no recall and that it was sold to retailers as very 'limited' or there was a manufacturing issue which limited the initial pressing

Best Buy either had the best dvd buyer given the amount they got (though they did have an exclusive cover on this)
and other b&m retailers just completely dropped the ball
or other stores orders were cut by the studio to allocate Best Buy and their cover exclusive with the largest amount

as to the commentary
Digital Bits did report one in their 8/1 'rumor' mill
Quote:
audio commentary with director Christopher Nolan and co-writer David Goyer
but as they stated that was unofficial until announced
I can't seem to find a studio press release for this but the 10/6 interview with Nolan would clearly indicate this was never recorded (at least with his participation)

unless an answer becomes clear in the next few days I might just open my single disc version
I don't like being left in the dark (no pun intended) on info about a pretty major home video release

The 2-disc is no longer listed on the Best Buy website. Not "unavailable" - it just doesn't show up at all. I also checked deepdiscountdvd, and it's not on their site anymore either. Just the one-disc. In fact, I had the 2-disc on my DDD wish list, and it has completely vanished from there as well...

I tried to buy it at Wal-Mart and Target, both places are sold out in my area. They have tons of the bare bones one, though. But I want the DELUXE.

I live in Canada, in Toronto, and over here it was underordered. Not any less than a usual SE and a barebones, but under in terms of they should have ordered more than the usual amount as this is a popular title for those that loved it in theatres and obviously one for those who always wanted to catch it but never got around to it in the theatres

First day out it had already sold out at most places and I had to drive across the city to get a copy of the deluxe. The Futureshop I got it at only had a couple of copies left and other locations had sold out already. Found out that they wouldn't be getting new ones until perhaps a week later as they would need to order more copies.

Last few days I checked Walmart, Bestbuy, HMV and none of these places were carrying the deluxe, only the barebones. Never heard of this happening for any title before, let alone a obviously popular title.

Perhaps WB only printed a limited number of deluxes for stores for whatever reason?

btw, over here only FS had the special cover for the deluxes and Bestbuy only had a poster. And I don't see the distortion on the left side of the cover on my copy like some others have discussed on this thread...or maybe I just missed it.

hmmm R2 seems to have gotten a nice release. The R1 exclusive cover which is glued on the standard cover for the deluxe in R2 is better integrated (and possibly standard?). The amaray case cover pic is also alot nicer and different that the slipcover. Furthermore, it seems to have an insert too. Does anybody know the contents of the insert? Looks like chapter listing...

I went to Best Buy Thursday night and was told the 2 disc set was sold out earlier that day. That they may be getting more in Friday (Yesterday) or next week. I'll stop in today and see what's up. I had also went to FYE where they had nono of the 2 discers. Of course if there is a recall, it's gonna be a long wait.

The only place I've been able to find the Deluxe Edition online is at Amazon. Every other net retailer I've checked has it listed as out of stock or backordered.
In my area, every store was sold out of the 2-disc when I went out to get it Tuesday afternoon. I finally found a copy at Barnes & Noble. It was well worth the slightly inflated price they charged.
My local BB was sold out completely of the deluxe set but I stumbled across one sitting behind another movie further down the aisle. I guess someone had hidden it and planned to come back and get it later

I was also going to pick up the Land Of The Dead disc but they had NO widescreen at all

Man, I didn't realize so many people are having a hard time getting the two disc deluxe edition. Anyway, I actually bought the two disc set with the holographic cover at Best Buy. But, after thinking it over for about 30 minutes I took the movie back to Best Buy and had my money refunded.

Hey Matt Stone, that is pretty interesting that you have a picture and a quote from the film Halloween on your posts, because that is the movie I purchased with my refund money from the Batman Begins DVD. I've never had Halloween on DVD, so I figured it is about time I do something about it.

I have been to circuit city and best buy this week.. they had plenty of copies of both.. I have not seen many boxsets for batman films..I have seen lots of copies of single disc at the grocery stores like alberson's and etc.

I went to Zellers today here in Canada, and all I saw on the display was the single-disc edition. Someone is actually planning on getting me this movie for Christmas and I fear that the bare bones version is the one I'll end up with, when I really want the 2-disc deluxe. However, in this week's Futureshop flyer, both versions are advertised with the deluxe costing a mere $2 more.
According to Nolan, he never recorded a commentary track for the film because he felt it didn't require one.
Got the double disc today at BJ's Wholesale Club for 20.99. Screw Best Buy's exclusive cover! The only place I have seen the big boxset of the earlier movies was at the local FYE. I passed for now.

Went to Target today, they had about 5 deluxe editions left, bought one for 20 dollars.

I don't think the shortage of Deluxe packages has anything to do with a recall (if in fact there was one), at least for around here. I think the "shortage" is strictly because the dealers didn't get/order that many.

On release day, the Deluxe edition was selling for a few bucks LESS than the standard editions at certain places, and other large retailers price-match. By release day evening, I only saw 2 copies of the Deluxe so grabbed one as backup at a high price because I figured something was up. I had ordered a cheap copy from amazon.ca and who knows when I'll get it. At some of the larger stores that had BB displays, they had very little space for the Deluxe and it was empty. So, cheap release day price and small supply = none to be found by now...

Personally, I don't believe a studio would recall a disc for a "missing" feature of relatively minor importance to the vast majority of the audience. I suspect only Criterion might do this for a missing commentary, different type of customers. And especially since the commentary isn't even listed on my package (Canadian), so nothing promised is missing anyway.

No Deluxe Editions left at the Best Buy I went to last night (and no Anthology boxes, for that matter). Plenty of the one-disc, and everything else, though.

Glad I ordered the Deluxe Edition from Amazon, before the price increase.
Both Best Buy and Future Shop were sold out on Tuesday, so on Wednesday I went to A & B Sound, where they had plenty of Deluxe Editions for $24.88. I may not have got the one day price of $21.99, but at least I paid less than if I'd gone back to BB or FS.

I LOVED this movie!!!!

Boxes and boxes of the Deluxe at Costco today. $21.59. Packaged in a double thick CD-style longbox, too.

If any "paranoid" soul wants me to pick one up for them, e-mail me.

Not paranoid, but sometimes when something you know is pretty good you want to make sure you get it. When it seems hard to get when you think it should be plentiful (because it's so good) you get weird thoughts...like maybe you have bad taste??

Speaking for locally, release day "good deals" are rare compared to in the States, and perhaps people jumped on it (a 2-disc selling for less than the 1-disc in the same store, hard to figure).

I doubt that was much of a factor down here. The retailers selling the Deluxe Edition for less than the one-disc must have been few and far between. Certainly none of the big chains I visited on Tuesday (Best Buy, Circuit City, Target, Wal-mart, K-Mart, Barnes & Noble) used this strategy. Pricing at these stores was $14.99-$19.99 for the one-disc and $22.99-$29.99 for the Deluxe.

Re: possible recall

This may not mean anything, but I watched football all day yesterday, and saw a bunch of ads for the one-disc Begins. Didn't see a single one for the Deluxe version, and I had seen quite a few of those earlier in the week.

Probably just coincidence, but I thought it was kind of strange. . .

Patrick Sun:

Thanks for the hologram vs. lenticular explanation in your post #190.

there is a problem with the 2 disc in the uk HMV have the 3d cover graphic novel ed and everyone i know who has bought it there had to go through at least 8 copies before a non scratched / tainted disc was found and they were all sealed
post #237 of 436
Hello....just adding to the growing list of (canadian) people who, after last Tuesday, can't find the 2-disc ANYWHERE.

All I can say is I'm glad I chose this film to be my first blind buy- since I bought the deluxe with the special cover. I'd be kicking myself if I had just rented it and wanted to buy it later on!
went to HMV yesterday and they had tons of the deluxe but without the lenticular special cover
post #239 of 436
This shortage of the Deluxe does not really surprise me very much. One of the things I have noticed about the same day Standard vs. Deluxe version release over the years is that in many cases, B&Ms order very light on deluxe editions (if any at all). Probably because they don't think that most people would want to go with the "Cheaper" version. I think that many of these retailers seriously underestimated demand for the Deluxe edition. This isn't the first time something like this has happened. Anyone remember the "Chappelle's Show: Season One" Fiasco. It took me weeks after the release date to finally get a copy of that.

The shortage of the Deluxe Edition extends to most online retailers as well, which *is* unusual. Right now Amazon appears to be one of the only places that it's in stock. This seems to indicate an actual shortage of product in the pipeline rather than a retailer ordering issue. Deep Discount DVD doesn't even *list* the Deluxe Edition.
