Star Wars 3 disc set. Or, the biggest waste of money this year...

Star Wars 3 disc info and cover

DVDanswers has the info on a December release that is the same as last year's trilogy, but without the 4th disc, and a new cover. Lucasfilm calls it a "limited edition".

I call it the biggest waste of time and money.

These have to be the original cuts of the films. As impossible as that sounds, it's the only way this makes any sense. It does use the original coverart, and they're only speculating that these are the exact same discs.

damn i love that art must resist double dip

If the surrounds are corrected on ANH, I'll buy the set.
Do we know that this release is for real ? I find it rather hard to believe given the first DVD issue was so recent and that it is still so readily available.

Until this is forthcoming in a press release from Lucasfilm/Fox I think any discussion as to content or "corrections" is a little premature.

its real.
it was rumored for ages that there would be a cut down set for the release of episode 3 before the 2006/7 ultimate box (before the next one)

Much better box art. And no way are they the original cuts.

Why? I take it you held out on buying the previous set? If the surrounds are corrected, that goes against their claims that there are NO problems with the current DVD set. If that's the case, there will be alot of angry people.

You forgot about correcting the darkened lightsabers in ROTJ.

hmmm this is odd. Why the re-release? The original box is not OOP as far as I know. Is it?
This almost confirms a Prequel Trilogy Box Set this year...but the question is, are there differences?

Probably not, but why re-release it? And if there is a Prequel Box Set on the same day, is there any changes to that, say Digital Yoda and new transfer of Episode?

Again, probably not going to happen at all but it doesn't make sense to re-release the Original Trilogy. Prequel Box Set, I can see. But not this.

I rather have a recall of the current set.
I hope this consists of the original versions - otherwise, what's the real point (outside of the legion of Star Wars completists)?
Assuming it's the same discs, my sister may just be inheriting my original box set (minus the fourth disc, heh heh). I love the original ANH poster art.

But, really, I can probably resist. She doesn't care that much about the movies, and I can't see the box art when it's sitting on the shelf.
As much as I would LOVE to think this is the REAL Original Trilogy, I would be shocked if that were the case. I just can't see that being kept quiet so long. I sure wish that it were the unaltered originals though. I really enjoy the current set, but I would definitely pay for official releases of the unedited, un-cgi'ed versions.
If it were the original versions, I think they'd have indicated so on the boxset...
It's the same set without Disc Four and in a different package. I doubt George Lucas, who has spent the last eight years saying that the originals are incomplete, is going to suddenly release the original movies without much fanfare. Sure the guy changes his mind but I don't think he'll be making that drastic of a change. If he ever does release them (which I doubt), you'll know months and months in advance.

I love Star Wars but I'm not getting this for a new box. Gimme some new content and I'll gladly re-buy it like a sucker!
Yes, because the Special Editions are now just the regular editions (without any special labels) if that makes any sense. Lucas has stated that the original versions are no longer what he considers to be the version of Star Wars he made.

If they were the original versions, it would probably be something like 'Archival Edition'.

Too bad there is no branching feature to watch all the many variations of the films.

This new box set release really puzzles me.

Even though DVD Answers states that the set will go for around $49.98, I'm betting it will be sold at a much lower price than that -- bargain style pricing.

It's probably aimed at the parents who will buy it for there kids as a gift for Christmas.

Exactly. They're re-releasing it with a new cover, it will be a 'new' release so stores will get a pretty good number of copies, that will catch people's eye, and people with kids who loved Episode III will pick up the set for the holidays.

I much prefer the new cover art... but unless the audio is corrected on these discs, I will definitely be passing.

I can see al the SW nerds complaining on messageboards right now and than rushing out on release day to add this to their collection.

Like I said- biggest waste of money.
Alright, you KNOW someone here will buy it to see if the music has been quietly corrected...
Who's gonna do it?

If they do correct the audio, doesn't that mean they have to replace our defective versions (which they will have no choice but to admit to since there's no reason to correct something that isn't broke...then again, this is Star Wars we're talking about)?

I don't think there's a way they can 'quietly' correct the audio, especially with people aware (and justifiably suspicious) of some of the 'questionable' things that have been done in the name of Star Wars by Lucas, Fox, etc.

Or it won't be quiet after the many reviewers get a hold of this version.
I hear ya but truthfully, of ALL the people who bought the Star Wars set, what percentage even knows of this? These websites aside, I don't think the average consumer knows or even cares. Was there ever a mainstream news-story re: flipped music surrounds? So even if they do quietly correct this, (which I doubt will happen until the next BIG release where they use the word "remastered" somewhere which would get them off the hook) what can you do? Try returning your almost year old set to your retailer saying that you want an exchange because of "flipped music surrounds". The expression on the salesguy's face would be priceless!

That leads me to this- does everyone here have a home theater system?
I don't, so the issue of flipped surround channels doesn't apply, but I have always wondered how many people who visit these places do have them. In my case, the only noticeable changes in the audio are volume (like the Force theme problem) and clarity (the differences in dialogue sound quality ).
Actually, Best Buy will let you exchange a defective DVD regardless of when it was bought and whether or not you have a receipt as long as it is an exchange for the same exact title. Just a few days ago, I finally exchanged my BTTF DVD set (the one that was bought first day of release) for the 'fixed' one, and even managed to exchange my rated Ichi the Killer for the unrated version (bought accidently). Both copies were open.

As far as awareness for the previous SW DVD defects, that's hard to tell. But I am sure a nice sum of people would want corrected versions if available, alot of people on this forum (as well as others) especially! But you're probably right about using the 'remastered' term to hide the true nature of an actual 'fix' to a defect.
This isn't at all surprising. They repackage these flicks CONSTANTLY. It's been about a year, and another Star Wars movie is hitting shelves around the same time. Makes perfect sense to me that they'd repackage the DVD's and toss em back out there like "GOtta catch em all!" Like Cory said, if anything, this is acknowledgment that they're going to release a prequel box set as well, so you can stand em next to each other.

I seriously doubt anything will be changed. partially because I'm sure if there WAS a change--it would have leaked to the star wars fans by now. The interesting note was that "easter eggs" would be on each disc. I wonder what THOSE are. There were only 2 easter eggs last time, and they're on the 4th disc of the regular set.

I DO think that the documentaries on the Episode III disc that feature cgi replacing Yoda from Episode I might hint that Episode I will have a new transfer and a new Yoda, but I've heard a lot of word that WON'T be seen until 2007 at the earliest. but who really knows. I DO know that it would REALLY suck to have to buy the whole PT boxset if that's the case. But I'm not seeing that happen.

The IMDB reported on it last year.
so the answer is no?

while I dig the IMDB, I hardly consider a mention of this as a mainstream news story. I meant like, Time, Newsweek, USA today or even Entertainment weekly.
My point is that us HT enthusiasts aside, I think it's safe to say that the majority of people who bought this set don't know about this and even if told would hardly care. And I also think that the majority of dvd buyers in this country don't read the IMDB on a regular basis.

I fail to see how this is a waste.

Especially for those who may have not yet purchased the trilogy.

If you already purchased and are satisfied with what has come, then you don't have to "waste" your money.

I fail to see the problem.
