Re: *** Official SERENITY Discussion Thread

It is great Matt. Glad you got the HD DVD version as it looks and sounds fabulous. I was late to the Serenity love fest myself....So far, I haven't grown tired of watching it.

Because like the rest of America, you probably heard a promo that said, "from the creators of Buffy the Vampire Slayer," snickered a little, and put it out of your mind.

I was actually going to pop in "Serenity" last night, but decided to start watching "Firefly" again instead. Still good stuff on the third time thru.

I've gone from Firefly to Serenity to Buffy...and I know Angel will be next.

Firefly is still my favorite of Joss' creations.

Re: *** Official SERENITY Discussion Thread

The more I think back on it, I don't really remember a whole lot of promo's for the TV show. I remember hearing more in the forums about it, but I never bothered to check into it.....sad really because it was so damn enjoyable. I really believe that had I heard a little more about it I would have checked it out.
When Serenity came out, I remember thinking that it was a movie aimed at the fans of the TV show, I still didn't know anything about it = not real interested. Now...I could kick myself for not checking into it.

Do you realize just how people like me there are out there ??? That didnt give the show a second thought for whatever reason but that would have totally loved this show ??
--it kills me now knowing this.

Trust me, it kills the fans more. Had more people given it a chance when it premiered, it might still be on the air today.

Meanwhile, "According to Jim" is in, what, its sixth season?

Exactly. How many seasons did "Reba" go?

Sitcoms are easy and relatively cheap to produce ("Friends" cast salary negotiations not withstanding). Even with smaller audiences, networks and studios can make a profit from them, especially if they make enough to go into syndication. A show like Firefly was extremely expensive and difficult to produce, and most network suits aren't going to "get it."

Such an irony that Firefly started on Fox, the network that gave X-Files a few seasons to find its audience. Firefly was consistently better in 14 episodes than X-Files was in the first two seasons (and make no mistake, I love X-Files) but given zero support by the network.

Re: *** Official SERENITY Discussion Thread

I personally went from Serenity to Firefly, and it is one of my favorite movies and shows, but it may never have been considering the trailer to the movie.

What a horrible trailer. All you had to say was from the creator of Buffy . . . gag I hated that show, and the continuous clips of little River kicking butt all over the place just looks contrived and ridiculous out of context.

These days Networks can't be trusted with anything. The fabulous show Kings will likely never make it past the first season. It was already delayed till summer.

Re: *** Official SERENITY Discussion Thread

Wow, a two year jump in a thread. Interesting, because I just started watching Firefly again on DVD, and and am on the verge of purchasing the set on BluRay, along with Serenity (which has a very high rewatch value in my house.)

Re: *** Official SERENITY Discussion Thread

I upgraded to the BR for Firefly. Well worth it too.

Re: *** Official SERENITY Discussion Thread

Amazon had the BR Firefly set for $40.00 today. Convinced the wife to get it for me for Father's Day.

Re: *** Official SERENITY Discussion Thread

Cool! You'll love it Stephen.

As for Serenity still feel its the best SF, and most overlooked SF, movie of the past 10 years.

Re: *** Official SERENITY Discussion Thread

Lou, I have been a fan of Firefly since the Train Job (the first ep Fox aired). I picked up the Firefly DVD set at Suncoast for $25 when they were first released, and saw Serenity at the special sneak that Universal and Josh Whedon sponsored months before it hit theaters. I bought a 2nd Firefly DVD set for my son when he went to college in Texas, and he began weekend marathons to get his friends hooked on the show (he's probably responsible for a few dozen DVD set sales in the Abilene TX area LOL ). The Serenity Christmas ornament wass the first I bought for my home theater Christmas tree two years ago, and I have every version of Serenity on DVD/HD-DVD/Blu.

Of course, I will love it!

I have the theme song as a ringtone on my phone, as well.

They are announcing re-showings of Serenity for charity in theaters, of course:

Nothing in my area, rats. I would be there, especially if they're showing Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog!

Well, that's sure the moment the convinced me this was gonna be something different.... I wasn't quite sure what to make of it when I first started watching it with the first episode Fox aired, but I tuned in every week just because it was so unlike anything I was seeing anywhere else. I was very sorry to see it canceled, but I didn't really become a Browncoat until I got to see it all, in the correct order, when the DVD set came out.

I have to say that I thought the promo for the film failed on a lot of fronts. Too much emphasis on Joss's name (those of us to whom it would mean something were going to be there anyway, come hell or high water), and some of the TV spots focused more on the hype of how highly-anticipated (within the SF fan world) the film was -- I don't think I ever saw anything that spotlighted some of the very positive reviews the film was getting from mainstream critics like Roger Ebert.

BTW, the page linked above was just for Can't Stop the Serenity events from June 8-21. The full calendar is here. Many of the events are also showing "Dr. Horrible's Singalong Blog," which is going to be way fun in a big theater filled with Whedon fans....

ETA: If there isn't something in your city, you might want to consider hosting an affiliate event. See the website above for more info.

Re: *** Official SERENITY Discussion Thread

It's still *amazing* to me that Fox cancelled "Firefly" before even airing the four star eps "Trash" or "Heart of Gold" ... or even the original pilot!!

Heck ... Somehow the girl that played Saffron (Christina Hendricks) even won an award for best guest star appearance for "Trash" ... even though the first time anybody saw it was on the DVD set!

We've been running through our Firefly DVD set this week as a "run up" to a "Serenity" viewing --- and it's still *astonishing* how good this series was. It truly was the best series ever cancelled after a half-season!! And the movie is just as good ... but with better production values. Somebody needs to get this franchise off the shelf!!
