Do those numbers reflect the number of screens that the movie is playing on, or the number of theaters it's showing in? I'd totally expect the screen count to go down now that it's in it's third week, but hopefully the theater count won't go down much.
That's the theater count.

Most theaters still running the film will only have it on one screen now. Too many new openers competing for space,

I had heard that it was Tudyk, himself, who suggested the death, but is also signed for potential sequels.

Hopefully, some Universal higher-ups are reading this thread and seeing all of the positive reaction people here are giving this movie.

Here is my story on it, for what it's worth.

I recall seeing an ad for this movie on TV and thinking to myself that it looked like a mediocre TV movie for the teenybopper crowd (a totally wrong assumption, by the way.)

Later on, I received an e-mail from Rotten Tomatoes with overwhelmingly positive reviews, which made me crack a smile with surprise.

A bit after that, I happend across a random thread in another forum completely unrelated to movies, where someone made a thread that basically proclaimed "Serenity is f*ckin awesome" especially, he added, if you are a fan of the "Firefly" TV series.

I then became more curious and looked up "Firefly" at Amazon, where the series had a maximum 5 star rating from I believe over 1500 write-in reviews. I wondered how it was that I had never heard of this show until now?

So, I bought the series the next day, and my wife and I really got into it; Watching it over the course of less than a week’s time.

Tonight we finally got out to see the movie, which is quite something for us as we have a 20 month old daughter who gets all of our attention. Never wanting to be the guy who brought his baby to cry at the theater, we had to work something out with the family so our daughter would be in good hands while we escaped to a movie.

I think we have been to maybe 1 other movie since our daughter was born, as we have to be very selective about what we see because our opportunities for that sort of thing are so rare these days.

I am glad to say that the movie was worth it. Great movie, and we are trying to turn friends and family on to Firefly/Serenity whom we feel might also be fans of this kind of series/movie.

I can only hope for a good return for the people behind the movie so that there will be more upcoming from this 'Verse they have created.

I saw it a second time, and it's now safe to say that it's the best movie I've seen all year (tie with Crash).

The report I've read is that when the show was still in production that he had suggested to Whedon that it would be cool to kill of his character at the end of Season Two. So when the script came and Wash was killed off, Tudyk wasn't that surprised based on their previous conversations.

As for signing for sequels- anyone who has seen a Whedon show knows that just because your character is killed off doesn't mean that you can't appear in later episodes (and to his credit Whedon has never cheated with "fake" deaths that I can recall). He's pretty creative about incorporating characters who have shaken off the mortal coil.

Am I the only one who thinks a sci-fi resurrection of the show isn't rediculous to imagine?

Tim Minear could have a strong hand in it while Whedon's working on his film projects.

The Sci-Fi ratings for the re-runs are pretty strong, and appear to have gained numbers since the premiere episode aired. The ratings are only slightly lower than Battlestar and the other shows they air.

The episodes are 3 years old, and have been available on DVD for a very long time, with better picture/sound. So clearly the people watching probably aren't the hardcore fans. So if you take the average 1.3 million tuning in every week and throw in the hardcore fans who'd tune in for NEW episodes (not to mention the new people who'd recently gotten into the series because of the film) you'd have a pretty good chance for a hit.

I'm surprised they didn't start talks as soon as the first few episodes reaired.

Sean*O's post made me think of something that might have been mentioned, I might have missed it. It would be interesting to see how the sales of the normal box set have done in relation to the release of the movie. The publicity could have generated quite an increase in sales which would, at least indirectly, increase the 'success' of the Film.

Everyone I know who has seen the movie without seeing the original series on TV or DVD, have also checked out the DVD's either renting or buying them. One person told me they were having a hard time trying to buy it, because the stores he checked said they kept selling out.

But, like you said, there ought to be some sales or rental numbers supporting this somewhere.

From what I've read and heard, unless the deals between Fox and Universal get set aside, it's going to be tough for the show to return to Television because of Universal deal that prohibits Fox from producing the series for 10 years, and the actors involved were uncertain if they would want to do the show then, or if there would even be a market for the show in the future. Thus, the emphasis for the film sequels by the crew of actors.

Apparently the 10 year thing is not true, it was just Adam Baldwin being a smart ass.

Also, I'm sure there's some legal issue they could get around. FIREFLY is done... but "Serenity: The Series" could be a possibility.

I fail to see how such a distinction could ever hold up in court. It's clearly the same IP.

The only legal go around I could imagine is this: a series of Direct-to-DVD movies are made of which the rights are sold to a network for airing:

After seeing the movie today in the UK in a mostly-full theatre and loved it, I went to amazon.uk to buy the DVD series (having never seen an episode before). However, the show was out of stock, presumably wiped out by ravenous new fans like myself.

The movie debuted at number one in the UK also. So, perhaps there some slight hope for overseas numbers making some kind of future arrangement for this concept viable.
We also have NO idea the legal issues regarding a possible return of the series.

Some reports say 10 years, others 3, others 5. Some imply there's NO chance they can make the show, others say it could. I'm simply saying that the possibility still exists... probably about .01% but still, it's something to hope for.
Perhaps, but a change of names like you described is not it. Whatever may transpire, it's not gonna be that simple.

I saw this for the 4th time (probably my last theatrical viewing), and I still get moist eyes throughout the 3rd act once Serenity crash lands on Miranda. They stay moist even when I'm driving back home. Can't say I've seen many other films that can do that to me everytime I see it.

I give credit to Joss for putting together a film that moves with nary a dull segment, it just rifts through its running time, and there is never a time where you even think about lookin at your watch.

yeah i wanna go back and see this one again.the first time was awesome.i do hope those rumors are right that the movie will be out on dvd at Christmas.

Has anyone spotted any widescreen Serenity wallpapers? The official site only contains 4:3 versions.

Thanks.

Four friends and I caught a showing today (I also caught it earlier this week, as well). Two had seen the show and were on their second and third viewings. And the two newbies really enjoyed it. One intends on checking out the DVDs of "Firefly" right away.

Despite reports of waning box office numbers, I was surprised at both showings at how full both theaters were (about half, really). Not bad, I thought. Hopefully, it lingers in the vicinity of where it's been for a couple weeks still. I'll probably catch it again next week, if it's still playing locally.

When I got word that "Serenity" was released, I was like "oh shit, I wanted to see that," and watched the entire series. Then, loving it, promptly ordered it (everyone nearby's been sold out!) and saw the movie. So much good stuff going on.

I'd tried to catch it a couple times on Fox (mostly to see Jewel Staite), and actually managed to catch "Shindig" (now one of my favorite episodes) when it aired. I liked what I saw but just lost the show. I'm sad I did. It really strikes me as something unique, if not for any particular element, the mixture of elements and the lens through which they are viewed.

I will admit that I missed some of the western feel of the show, and it's true that the movie's best moments were the pure character interaction, but the movie really was kickass. I liked it even more the second time.

Looking forward to some sort of continuation. God, I hope there is one.

I just wonder how much Fox regrets killing the show as quickly as they did.
Considering that the movie is performing below studio expectations, probably not very much at all.

No. You have to take the 1280x1024 ones and trim them down to 1280x760.

Notice that all the wallpapers, advertising banners, flash animations, everything, uses the international poster art. Almost as if someone at Universal changed the domestic poster after they'd already invested in the original art.

But of related interest, I found a stash of the high-resolution promo photos from both the series and movie here. Huge file sizes, massive:

Regardless of any boxoffice failings (and why as viewers should we care so much, isn't it all about quality?)Joss hit this one out of the park...

Well considering that Firefly is in the top 10 on Amazon.com I can only assume that it is because of interest in the movie. Now if it is profitable as a series and then when the DVD of Serenity comes out I would imagine that Fox would regret that they killed it off before its time.
Doubtful.

We got an excellent movie, but the earnings potential is minimal at best. The series was cancelled because of low ratings, and the movie was financed because Universal wanted a space franchise. Unfortunately, the lackluster performance at the box office has basically killed that idea. They may recoup their investment after the film hits DVD, but they were hoping for a lot more.

I'm glad the movie was good. Too bad most of America couldn't care less.

If there ever was a roll model of how a Sci-fi movie should be made, this would be one of very few. It's been almost 30 years since I have enjoyed a movie this much in a theater, that last movie, Star Wars back in 1977.

Saturday night I went with a couple of friends, by 7:15 as the previews started the theater was nearly sold out. It was a full house. This is how I remember going to the theater used to be. A crowd that was fully into the show; cheering, clapping and yelling as things happened on screen.

This film has it all; good acting, a good story that holds your attention for 2 hours. Decent special effects, could have been a bit better but I imagine the budget for this film was small. We get lots of laughs; some real heart felt emotion, the intensity of a good space battle (during the Reaver / Alliance fight).

This film delivers one hell of a ride and gets a 10/10 from me.

The theaters presentation of the film was decent. On the audio side of things it was excellent. Good solid bass that was not over cooked and an active surround sound track that filled the room. The film itself looked soft and lacked any real detail and the shots onboard Serenity were quite dark, darker then the TV series. I give the presentation a 7/10.
