DVD-A AND regular DVD 5.1 for those of us who do not have DVD-A yet.

Every Warner DVD-A I have includes DD and/or DTS for backwards compat.

On a related note, I saw A History of Violence last night. Howard Shore scored this as well. I guess he just had to squeeze it in, working on King Kong at the same time, or whatever, but the end titles suite sounds like a FotR outtake!
I thought all of the quieter music in AHoV had a FotR feel to it. Not a direct melodic copy by any means, but very similar sound palette and chords. A good way to put it would be that the score often sounded like it was just about to burst into one of the familiar LotR themes. To be honest, it kind of took me out of the movie (especially with Viggo on screen).

That doesn't seem to be the complete listing for Disc 3. Only seven tracks? And no "May It Be"? Also tracks are all either renamed or split and/or combined, as the original score has the following tracks:

Quote:
1. The Prophecy
2. Concerning Hobbits
3. The Shadow Of The Past
4. The Treason Of Isengard
5. The Black Rider
6. At The Sign Of The Prancing Pony
7. A Knife In The Dark
8. Flight To The Ford
9. Many Meetings
10. The Council Of Elrond
11. The Ring Goes South
12. A Journey In The Dark
13. The Bridge Of Khazad Dum
14. Lothlorien
15. The Great River
16. Amon Hen
17. The Breaking Of The Fellowship
18. May It Be

There's some discussion of this set over in the FotR thread in the Movies section. In this post someone copied an interview about the set, in which it was stated that the tracks would be on the long side:

Quote:
...the tracks on the FOTR set are representative of the musical breaks. Tracks end where silence occurs, which means they’re mostly on the lengthier side. I won’t tell you the exact breakdown, but it looks like there will be over 30 tracks split between the three discs. Personally, I think it’s great. This is not a sound-bite type of score.
Given this, the 7 tracks on CD 3 makes sense, as there was a lot of music without many breaks near the end of the film. These will probably all be long tracks. "May It Be" is probably heard as part of the final track, which I imagine is the final few minutes of the film and the entire credits sequence.

Another interesting tidbit from that interview:

Quote:
As I’ve hinted at above, you will hear a bit of unreleased music on this set, but most of what was written for the first film actually ended up in the film. In fact, most of the alternate versions of the compositions were released on the original soundtrack CD.
This is not too surprising; as we all know, "The Breaking of the Fellowship", while a great track, differed quite a bit from what we heard in the film.

Does anyone know if $41.99 is the best price?
The price drops begin...at least lets hope so...

The amazon.com link above now says $53.99...10% off the MSRP of $59.99 (a savings of $5.99).

Amazon has posted details on the score:

Quote:
An epic film score receives epic treatment with The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring/Complete Recordings. Released for the first time on CD, the complete score for the first film in the Lord of the Rings trilogy contains more than 180 minutes of music on three CDs plus a DVD-Audio disc of the entire score in Surround Sound. Breathtaking and majestic, the 2001 Oscar and Grammy winning score compsted by Howard Shore also includes Enya's Oscar nominated "May It Be." For fans of any of The Lord of the Rings films, the Fellowship of the Ring/Complete Recordings is an essential experience.

And the release is now set for 12/13.

Thx, Paul. So--IF Amazon is accurate--it's what Warner did with parts of the R.E.M. and Seal catalogs: a "double disc" package of both CD and DVD-A.

Unfortunately I don't think there's yet Warner precedent for a title released as "double" then being released separately later. When I kvetched about the issue in other threads, some many argued that for a few dollars more DVD-A listeners are getting car playback ability, but I'd just as soon not pay more for the CDs to be "included" (and I'd surmise many non-DVD-A listeners who just want CDs feel similarly?).

If this turns out to be accurate and depending upon packaging, if there are any strictly CDers herein who don't want the DVD-A, I'll be happy to split the cost and take the DVD-A off your hands.

I'm really torn on this. In most instances, I think I want both. But with this set, I already own enough of the audio material on CD...that I'd prefer just the DVD-A.

I was just bitchin' in a neighboring thread about how I was unaware that Diana Krall's Girl In The Other Room release had been released BOTH by itself and as a dual disc release. I, of course, had purchased the CD-only copy first and then stumbled upon the dual release--FOR THE SAME PRICE! I'm glad to have the release in 5.1 audio (all her releases sound great in high-rez surround)...but pissed that I had to buy twice to get it!

I have no problem with this set incuding both CD and DVD-A. I can play the CDs in the car, etc., and I can listen to the DVD-A on my PC. Plus I'm sure the packaging will be pretty sweet (any pics anywhere yet?). Note that it now says "more than 180 minutes", and confirms "May It Be" is included.
I sure as heck want both CDs & DVD-A!!! The CDs will be ripped to my iPod. The DVD-A will be used for listening sessions at home.

Of course, a multi-disc SACD hybrid release would have covered both needs, but the Warner group don't go there (heck, even Sony hardly does anymore), so this is about the best we can do. Just be glad they're not DualDiscs!!
An aside:

I was just bitchin' in a neighboring thread about how I was unaware that Diana Krall's Girl In The Other Room release had been released BOTH by itself and as a dual disc release. . . .

Mike, you're aware that this album was also released on SACD, yes? A release which may have a higher rez surround mix than the Dual's 24/48 . . .

There's been lots of duplication by UMG of the Krall catalog on the three (SACD, DVD-A, Dual) formats.

-p
Paul: Yeah, I know Krall is an artist who takes advantage of the SACD format. I, unfortunately, am not a consumer who takes advantage of the SACD format. Maybe someday....

I've got a number of Krall CDs, DVD-As, and now the DualDisc "Girl in the Other Room". I was intrigued by Craig's comment two posts ago about the FOTR release:
Quote:
Just be glad they're not DualDiscs!!

Is there something about the DualDisc format some consumers aren't liking?
Mike, esp. if they're hybrids there's no reason to avoid SACDs just because you don't have a player yet.

And re your question about Duals: In a word, "yes." There have been plenty of threads about Dual issues/problems. Amongst the more significant concerns are vague audio descriptions that make it more difficult to determine whether they contain hi rez content (Sony is not supporting hi rez on Dual at all) and, of course, the "CD" side does not conform to the Redbook spec and may not play on some players. Do a search for more info.

I'd certainly prefer a perhaps double disc DVD-A of the complete scores for all three LOtRs pics rather than a "Double Disc" of just the first pic's score.

Paul: Thanks for your response.

I've got a lot to learn about the formats. I love the DVD-As. I am frustrated by the lack of available titles on DVD-A...but I guess I'm not the only one.

When I heard about the FOTR release, I figured it would be excellent. I agree its too bad its being packaged with the CDs. It'll be cost-prohibitive for me.
Yeah Mike--there's arguably no more reason to avoid hybrid SACDs for lack of an SACD player than there is to avoid DVD-As for lack of a DVD-A player (due to the DD and often DTS included for backwards compat). The Pio 588A universal is inexpensive.

I certainly hope this title makes its street date/indeed gets released as far DVD-A content is concerned. There's plenty of precedent for Warner in particular announcing something for DVD-A and then it never streeting. What with the recent hi def DVD tide swing in favor of Blu-ray (Paramount announced they're supporting both formats and there's speculation Warner Bros. will soon do the same), here's hoping WMG doesn't get cold feet on hi rez . . .

Note that on Disc 1, tracks 7 and 8 from the previously released tracklist have been merged into one. And we get confirmation on two more tracks on Disc 3.

Still no cover art, nor runtimes.
Thx, Paul.

Also at that listing is the following, seemingly adding further confirmation of a "double disc": "First 3 discs feature the complete score to The Fellowship Of The Ring. The 4th disc is a DVD with the complete score again, mastered in 5.1 sound."

Still concerned about the absence of any explicit indication that the DVD includes "Advanced Resolution Surround Sound" instead of DTS or DD though.

Thanks, Thomas.

That $53.99 price only deepens my wish that what Amazon's "Album Description" says is a DVD-A were available separately.

P.S. - Nice quote from Batman Begins and pic of His Royal Hotness Christian Bale, Thomas.

AWESOME packaging. Would love a 3D shot. As for pricing, for the complete score plus a 5.1 version, I don't mind dropping 50 bucks.
Versus less than half that ($14.99), which is what current Warner DVD-A pricing is?

Granted this is four discs not two, but the R.E.M. and Seal "double discs" are $24.99. I think they're gouging a bit here.

Looks good - looks like a match for the Extended Edition DVD set.

BTW, the Amazon price is high. CD Universe has the set for $41.99.
Hmmm--could just be a plain ol' error, but CD Universe lists the set as three discs.

Amazon updated their product page, and strangely, they have the previous tracklisting, with the 16-track first disc, and the 7-track third disc, not the newer version posted over at SoundtrackCollector.

Also, since they're going for that Extended Edition DVD box look, why isn't this packaged in a red case, as opposed to green?
