The Man From UNCLE?? - Page 10

Re: The Man From UNCLE??

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. is an important series, and I have no doubt that it will be transferred from the original negatives. Even 1980s cable reruns were in excellent condition, so these will surely be no exception.

Re: The Man From UNCLE??

Any UNCLE forum members or fan club'ers heard anything about this one for 07? Last we heard it was expected to see a release this year. Wasn't Robert Vaughn in process of interviews for Extras?

Didn't Warners say in the chat a few weeks ago we'd hear something later this year?

Re: The Man From UNCLE??

"Later this year" would mean the fall season.

Re: The Man From UNCLE??

I have a note jotted down from somewhere that says "late 2007." So I must have read that somewhere along the line.

Re: The Man From UNCLE??

One question remaining: how much will it cost? The Get Smart sells for $200, so I think that figure may also apply here.

Probably more. Its only four instead of five seasons but its an hour show instead of 30 minutes.

Re: The Man From UNCLE??

I passed on TL's "Get Smart", but I may have to pony for this one. Especially if the extras are enticing.

Thanks for the heads-up, Gord.

WOW! Thanks for the TSoD post, Gord! I was wondering how I missed that one but I see that you posted it today.

Re: The Man From UNCLE??

It would be something if the U.N.C.L.E. feature films were included- they had footage in them made especially for theaters and not included in the original two-parters. On the other hand, Warner Home Video could make a nice little boxed set of the feature films- something to whet the public's appetite for the TV show set.....

Re: The Man From UNCLE??

Wonderful news. I'm really looking forward to seeing MFU receive the royal treatment. I would have preferred purchasing seasons 1, 2 and 4 only, but if it's treated with the same lavish care as the "Get Smart" set appears to have been given, then I'll gladly accept the whole shebang.

Re: The Man From UNCLE??

I'm sorry to say a great big, honking "big deal" for those of us who don't live in the US. If it's sold like Get Smart, it won't be available to us filthy Europeans because of either territorial concerns or sheer shipping costs. UK Time-Life is a joke, offering a handful of licenced UK titles and godawful factual stuff like Air Crash Investigation. There's never been a whisper of the release of Get Smart, so it looks like MFU will be another of those releases most of us (except maybe affluent, crazed fans) won't see.

Re: The Man From UNCLE??

It's not really the fault of Time Life - their license is for region 1 (or R1 and R4 for Get Smart), and that's the only place they can sell it to. Amazon.com and other etailers aren't supposed to sell R1 DVDs to people in Europe either - most of the sets are marked with a note that says "Not Authorized for sale or rental outside the USA and Canada."

You'll be able to order it in a year when the seasons go to retail.

Re: The Man From UNCLE??

Great news, Gord! Thanks for passing that on to us. I was grinning from ear to ear when I got TSoD's email about the item.

This is good stuff, people. Complete series box sets are the way to go, and I'm in favor of studios doing them. Time Life did an outstanding job on Get Smart, which is probably my favorite TV-DVD release of all time. It doesn't get any more comprehensive than that.

Re: The Man From UNCLE??

Well, waddauknow! Didn't expect to see this happen anytime soon,

I'll be one of the first ones to order this if it actually goes on sale. However, after all the crap they've put us through over the last year on this show, I won't really believe it until it actually is available for purchase.

If this does happen, all I can say is THANK YOU for Time-Life!!!!!!!!!

Given how good of a job Time Life did with the ``Get Smart'' series set, I'll definitely pre-order ``The Man from U.N.C.L.E.'' when it comes up. Very glad that this is being done, and I agree with many of the posters including Sam about how much I like having the release of an entire series all at once.

Re: The Man From UNCLE??

Quite an interesting development. Thanks for the 'exclusive' Gord.

This should be a good set for fans of UNCLE. The episodes that air on American Life look near pristine so there's no reason the DVDs shouldn't be of very high quality. The "Smart" DVDs looked very good but there were very annoying quality degregations every time there were scene changes.

One question I have is how this impacts a potential release of the companion series of "Girl From UNCLE". That would make a great "extra"; a fifth volume to this collection.

To be technical, it was only 3 and a half seasons since Season 4 was only 16 episodes due to an abrupt cancellation. Yet another reason to round out the collection with Stephanie Powers. A big part of the price of Smart was attributed to the need to restore the episodes. UNCLE shouldn't have as great an expense since the masters appear to already be in great shape.

Re: The Man From UNCLE??

I certainly do hope that this is true. One good thing about Time-life is that they generally give you the option of spreadintg out the payments. It sounds like it is certainly wort buying. The peace of mind of not having to worry about the current season sold well enough to go on the next season.

I am also curious about the decision to license the title. Warner has made it clear that they do not license. Makes me wonder if there was some validity to the idea that Warner does not have undisputed ownership. This sounds like a compromise to me.

This is more of a partnership - Time Life gets a 1 year exclusive window on selling the show. They didn't do an out-right license like many other shows have.

Re: The Man From UNCLE??

...And it doesn't hurt that Warner Home Video and Time/Life are all part of the Time-Warner Company, either!

Re: The Man From UNCLE??

Perhaps if this sells well then maybe Warner might consider letting TL release some of their other series that they have no desire to put out.

Re: The Man From UNCLE??

I'm not blaming anybody when I say I can't get excited about the release. I'm just depressed that, as with the Get Smart set, it will be twelve months before I can hope to place an order; and if and when it does become more widely available, it will be prohibitively expensive to import and will undoubtedly incur hefty Customs duty.

If they follow the same format as the Get Smart set (individual seasons in a box) they will need a minimum of 28 discs just for the episodes. Add on a special features disc for each season, then you're looking at a 32 disc set, 7 more than Get Smart. This could easily be a $250 set, perhaps more.

But it will sure be worth it...

This is exactly what they've done with all but 3 of the feature films in the UK. I just picked up the set a couple of months ago and have been rationing my viewing so I can enjoy these as long as possible! If you are region free and a fan of this series (and why wouldn't you be if you are reading this!) then this is a no-brainer!

Re: The Man From UNCLE??

Any word on whether the TV-movie reunion ("The Fifteen Years Later Affair") will be released as well? I have fond memories of that film; it was the first thing I ever recorded on my first VCR (back when dinosaurs walked the earth)...

Re: The Man From UNCLE??

I was just checking on that this morning.

According to the IMDb, the movie is a Viacom production, so Warner wouldn't have the rights unless they licensed it.

I'm not holding my breath.
