Veronica Mars Season 2 - Page 20

How does this season stack up against the first one? I can't get VM in my area but will pick up the DVD boxset

IMO, it's even better. The "stories of the week" are generally more tied in with the overall arc and having a season's worth of background on the characters has really let the relationship dynamics come to the fore.

My only complaint is that it's a wee bit too complicated for broadcast (and UPN's horrible mid-season scheduling in particular) but it should play like gangbusters on DVD.

And judging by the things with one episode left, Rob Thomas did an excellent job laying out the breadcrumbs through the entire season since things seem to be coming together nice and consistently.

Re: Veronica Mars Season 2

I've enjoyed this season very much - as much as the first, though it's hard to keep up with things sometimes. Hard to believe it's all going to get tied up next week.

Re: Veronica Mars Season 2

This has been pushed back a week. It's now due August 22. Also, there is some discrepancy between the titles given and the titles aired (at least, according to epguides.com and tv.com). The second- and third-to-last episodes are called "Manning the Ship" and "See You Next Thursday" here, instead of "Happy Go Lucky" and "Look Who's Stalking."

Re: Veronica Mars Season 2

See You Next Tuesday was later renamed "Look Who's Stalking" probably because "See You Next Tuesday" is a reference to something kids write in yearbooks or on notes to each other.

Example... Hey Susan... thanks for stealing my boyfriend...

C U Next Tuesday

I'm sure that had a hand in why the title was changed.

My theory? The titles were changed last minute, so Warner has the early episode listings prior to the changes.

I completely agree with that. It seems as if the writers made a concerted effort in S2 to come up with "cases of the week" (aka MOTW = mystery of the week) that had something to do with the overall plotlines and didn't seem so much like a "detour" like the MOTW in S1 (missing dogs, stolen mascots, etc.).

Otoh, even though the writers were going for a greater degree of difficulty in S2 with tying all the plot lines together, I think the emotional impact of S1 was missing. I cared so much about finding Lilly's murder in S1 but in S2, it was a struggle to keep everything straight and the emotional impact was muted. Veronica also didn't seem to care all that much about what was happening because it wasn't as personal. In some episodes, it's as if she had forgotten all about the bus crash or just didn't really care.

But I also agree that S2 will play better on DVD. There will be less need for a flow chart if you are watching the show without weeks -- months -- of interruptions.

Re: Veronica Mars Season 2

Cool interview with Rob Thomas about the season and finale here (Be warned of spoilers and hints about what happens in the finale):

About next season (if there is one):

Quote:
TVF: What sorts of things are you looking to do in a third season, assuming you get one?
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

RT: I think everyone knows that Veronica's going to go to college. I think one of the things we're going to do away with is -- the biggest thing we're going to do in season three that will be a huge shift is we won't do a season-long, 22-episode mystery. Instead, we're going to do three long-arc mysteries. And they will be delivered in batches, hopefully uninterrupted by preemptions or repeats. The first mystery of the year might go eight episodes, and they would be eight in a row. I think some of the legitimate criticism we've received this year is for having too many threads going at once, having too many suspects, too many clues, too many red herrings. Part of it is the nature of it being hard to do a 22-episode mystery and only have three suspects and no dead ends. It needs to get a little tangential. There are other upsides of doing the three-mystery thing. It's easier to book guest-stars for like an eight-episode run. It's tough to get somebody like Harry Hamlin or Steve Guttenberg and say, "We want to use you in seven episodes over the course of 22." It's much easier to say, "We want you to do seven in a row." So I think it'll help us a little bit with casting. I also think it will help us a little bit with trying to bring in new fans of the show. One of the things we'll make a concerted effort next year to do is to really make the beginning of Season Three feel like it's a new show. ... When we wrote the first episode of Season Two, it was full of flashbacks and leaned heavily on the knowledge of year one. As Veronica goes to college, we wanted to -- while not giving up the "Veronica Mars" mythology, everything that happened actually happened and will effect her life, there won't be mystery elements that new fans will think, "What have I missed?"

Re: Veronica Mars Season 2

What Thomas says in that quoted section - genius. As much as I love the macrostory (and Veronica Mars handles that concept of small stories that assemble into a large one better than any show in recent memory), 22 episodes isn't the perfect length any more than 1 is.

Re: Veronica Mars Season 2

I read "macrostory" as "masectomy" and was thinking, "SPOILERS PLEASE! But, love a masectomy? Wha?" Heh.

I've got some big theories about Beaver:
Beaver was behind the leak which took down Woodie's plans for incorporation. He did this in order to manipulate property prices. People got scared of incorporation and sold their land to Beaver, because their land was outside the incorporation zone. Once he bought up all the land, he leaked Woodie's scandal and his land was suddenly worth a lot more.
2. He was behind the recording (attached to the "STOP INCORPORATION OR ELSE" e-mail) and it's his voice that's edited out. This way, he can impress Dick Sr. with his real-estate knowhow, but protects himself from the scandal coming out as a sexual abuse victim. With the other two kids in the recording dead, they're not around to point the finger at who the third person was. Now, the recording was made well before plans for incorporation became public, so it wasn't made with the purpose of stopping incorporation. More likely just to blackmail Woodie.
A small addendum: The recording was probably made by the kid who died in the bus crash who was threatening the "outing to end all outings" (Woodie).
This actually gives Beaver a motive for causing the bus crash. I don't think he did, but I will be the first to say "I told you so" if he did.

Anyone else think this might lead to the revelation that Duncan wasn't the only one she was with at Shelly Pomeroy's fateful party? This might be a tie-in to the unsolved college rape plotline assumed to be a major mystery for next season.

Don't forget Dick locking Beaver in a room with a passed-out Veronica, encouraging Beaver to rape her.
Wow.
Told ya so.

Re: Veronica Mars Season 2

I was so glad the season didn't end on whether Keith was on the plane. Lots of loose ends getting tied up at the end there, with plenty of others left loose...and it's cool the events of last season are still creating significant shockwaves in this one.

Re: Veronica Mars Season 2

Yeah, still some loose ends out there. For instance, who is Amber?

Re: Veronica Mars Season 2

I don't even remember an Amber being mentioned...

Also, I think Veronica should take Krav Maga in anticipation of next season's finale .

Re: Veronica Mars Season 2

Do we know the shooter?

I haven't read the Thomas spoilers, but I wonder if there's going to be a move to New York for the next season. It seems all the players are being moved to that side of the board. I know the stories came out that Hurst College would be the setting in the event of a third season, but I don't know if that was just speculation or what.

Re: Veronica Mars Season 2

"CW?" "It's a done deal."

Brilliant. Somebody noticed Clarence Weidman's (Kane security head's) initials and took advantage.

Re: Veronica Mars Season 2

Aaron Echolls' shooter was Clarence, head of security for Duncan's father's corporation.

That rooftop resolution was staged so awkwardly.

I figured that Keith wouldn't be on the plane (figures that Lamb would want to take credit for the collar and it keeps Keith from getting blown up in the process).

So we have another mystery with Keith and Kendall for the summer that won't be touched upon unless the show returns in the fall. Gak!

Isn't Beaver in the credits as the one with the body in chalk outlines?

Lamb was still in Neptune, he just didn't want the press to see Keith coming off the plane with Woodie.

Re: Veronica Mars Season 2

I knew he was familiar, but I forgot about the character.

And, of course, we still have the Felix murder to solve.

Re: Veronica Mars Season 2

I realize that. I was just making a comment on Lambs' ambitions saving Keith this time.

Re: Veronica Mars Season 2

I thought that was solved, Thumper killed Felix, Weevil got revenge by having the Fitzpatricks kill him.

Sorry, misread what you wrote. Thought it implied Lamb got blown up in the process.

All we know is that whoever killed Felix was riding Thumper's bike, but there was a lot of bike swapping that night.

The witness could only ID the bike. I think Weevil got the wrong guy killed.

Re: Veronica Mars Season 2

OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! What a finale!!! OH MY GOD! Ok, so was Lamb on the plane or not?

And I couldn't believe how they squeezed in everything from this season AND stories from last season into one great finale!!! It was awesome! Awesome, awesome, awesome!!! WOW!

Re: Veronica Mars Season 2

He wasn't on the plane. I wonder how he's going to feel about saving Keith's life, though. My gut is that, as much as they don't like each other, neither wants the other dead. For one thing, Lamb basically doesn't keep his job if not for Keith doing it for him half the time.

Re: Veronica Mars Season 2

I'm still in shock. You know, they had to have this whole season mapped out at the end of Season 1 cuz of that flashback to Beaver in the room with Veronica. I remember that from the episode about the date rape.

WOW! And, way to go Duncan!!! That was cool!

Re: Veronica Mars Season 2

So why exactly did Clarence unplug the security camera after he finished the call?

Re: Veronica Mars Season 2

So people wouldn't know it was him? Get rid of the evidence. He did just murder someone.

Re: Veronica Mars Season 2

So do we know why Lamb acted so strangely when he let VM go after getting caught in Meg's family's house in the middle of the season?

Re: Veronica Mars Season 2

Remind me... why is that? That was so long ago.

Re: Veronica Mars Season 2

One thing I don't get -- when we first see Aaron, he says Logan has to listen to him now because he controls the purse strings. But I thought Lynn left most of her money to Logan.
