Veronica Mars Season 2 - Page 14

Isn't it kind of stupid for Lamb to assume Cook might have detonated the bomb with a phone call from a casino? How would he have known it was driving along the cliff at that very second? Whoever did it must have been nearby, no?

Yeah, I heard he was. Hockey player who loses a finger, I think.

Well, last night Veronica aired against a new Lost, a new Criminal Minds, a new American Idol, and a new Law & Order.

2.58 million viewers ain't horrible for UPN, but it's upsetting to hear the ratings reporters call it a dud considering the competition. It did better than the Gilmore Girls repeat on The WB...

I think if The CW wants a success out of the show they'd better move it next season. Simply leading out of America's Next Top Model doesn't exactly spell success for a show. Then again, the ratings in the key demos aren't the worst, and hopefully UPN will realize that VM needs a better lead-in, or just a different time slot. It's on what is most likely the most competitive night on television. Perhaps something more reality-showish should be on then, something that has less of a budget than a 1-hour drama.

The talk seems to be that they would like to pair up VM with Gilmore Girls, though no day or time has been given. I'd hope they would change it to something a little less challenging. Seeing as how it's a Warner production, it probably won't go up against other popular Warner shows on Sunday ("Desparate Housewives") or Thursday ("The O.C.").

BTW, is anyone catching all the great "Big Lebowski" references on the show? They were even watching it in one of the early episodes this season.

Update 1: It looks like VM is moving back to Tuesday. It's not up against "Idol" or "Lost", but it will be opposite "House" (meh) and "Scrubs" (glad I have DVR). If...er...when it's renewed, I'm guessing it'll stay there for The CW, as it would be on right after "Gilmore Girls".
Update 2: The time change starts April 11, not next week.

Good news! That clears up my conflict. Tuesday is a good night, since it won't be in Idol's timeslot. I thought the show was safer than this writeup seems to imply, though. The stronger shows in the WB/UPN pairing seem to come from the WB side. What else does UPN have that would be a better performer for the CW? America's Top Model? It seems like there's plenty of room for both.

By the way, I had to laugh at the "previously on" last night. How complicated can you get?

That's a Touchstone production.

I think they went on longer than most shows do before their first commercial break! Still, I'd put the complication of this show up against the stupidity of most everything else any day.

Jason: Odd, I was sure it was Warner. Oh well, it doesn't really matter anyway.

This show really pushes the boundaries. Did you see Heidi's penis candle? I guess they could get away with it since it only showed the bottom half.

I checked the credits for David Greenwalt's name afterward, remembering how he absolutely loved the excessive recaps on every show he's run.

I must be the only person who likes this timeslot. I have alwys watched VM in its current timeslot. I am not a fan of any of the shows that run opposite it, at all.

If you're referring to Marc Berman's analysis, keep in mind the guy is clearly on crack. His basis for labeling something a winner or loser is how much of its lead-in's audience it retains -- he calls the show a loser because it loses half of ANTM's audience, but earlier this year, when VM was tanking in the ratings but had a much weaker lead-in, he put it in the winner's column.

I've been watching Veronica Mars and taping Lost in this time slot all season long. When both are reruns, I've been watching Criminal Minds. Tuesday nights would probably work okay too but I've been watching The Unit and taping Scrubs the past couple of weeks. The Unit hasn't quite hooked me yet so I'll probably watch Veronica Mars and continue taping Scrubs. If I REALLY need to see The Unit, I'll record it on my PC with my TV tuner card.

And don't forget House, M.D. on Fox in that Tuesday 9 p.m. timeslot to really crowd up things.

I didn't much like this week's episode all that much, but I did enjoy VM's reaction to being called a barista by the runaway bride.

Logan is really getting into the deep end of the pool once again.

Hey, a Wallace sighting!

Vinnie and Veronica - has nice ring to it for another kind of P.I. show, eh?

Beave has something up his sleeve, even with Kendal's name on all the documents (like leaving her holding the bag when it's not a good time to be having her name on the financial records).

Tuesday's at 9?!?! How can they do this to me?
That slot is filled.
House
Scrubs
Supernatural
Veronica Mars
Yeesh, at least WB and UPN aren't in HD so I don't record them anyway, thank you internet.

Funny how Logan always runs back to Veronica.
Love the inuendo's on Big Dick's name.
I love this show, it's really hitting it's stride again, some good but flat episodes this season, but the mystery really is getting to me again.

Supernatural is moving to Thursdays at 9EST.

sean,

Yeah, I agree. Veronica is only down about .5 million from the season premiere. It's pretty much doing better than last seasons average. Hopefully the move to Tuesday will help a bit in the ratings. I have a feeling though, that since neither UPN or WB have many hits left at this point, they'll give it at least a 3rd season pick-up on The WB.

Apart from Supernatural, Smallville (heading into season 6, including higher cost to produce episodes) and Gilmore Girls (heading into season 7... same deal as Smallville regarding cost) there isn't much on The WB. Most of their stuff has averaged around 3 million this season.

Veronica fills that "Critically acclaimed" void missing from both networks. Everybody Hates Chris does that for their half-hour stuff, but Veronica Mars was one of the first times UPN had that. It's why they renewed it for season two. The growth it showed was minimal, but UPN was proud to actually have a show that was making the top ten lists. When it started up they were pretty happy with the numbers. Unfortunately the time-slot was pretty much populated only by Lost episodes. Now with all four major networks putting their double digit hits on at the same time... there's just no room for Mars there.

I agree with the comments about the "previously on" stuff to be insane. Nobody not watching could understand a bit of that stuff... they'd do better to leave it out and try to reference stuff DURING the show. It scares people off.

Anyone remember when Wonderfalls did it? I kept wondering why on earth they bothered to mention that she sees talking animals when it's constantly referenced in the show itself, and Jaye goes the extra mile to mention how insane it is and how she might be crazy for seeing/hearing them. Absolutely no reason for a 40 second recap there.

TVGuide.com has suggested that the moved to 9 p.m. EST Tuesday is to build on the most probably pairing of Gilmore Girls and Veronica Mars on Tuesday nights for the new CW next season.

Which brings us to the worst-case scenario -- the CW picks it up, the ratings don't improve significantly, and the network cans it half-way through the season. Thankfully Rob Thomas is a novelist, so if that does happen he could at least finish the story in another media.

(Well, actually the worst case scenario is Rob Thomas creates a spin-off focusing on Logan, and Marti Noxon takes over VM, turning it into self-parody, with Veronica spending more time worrying about her relationships than fighting crime.)

My local WB and UPN affiliates broadcast VM and Supernatural in HD. I guess it's not standard across the country.

Everything I've heard from anyone who knows anyone at the CW says that this is the case. Dawn Ostroff, the current head of UPN and the new head of the CW, has stated that she'd like to see VM paired up with GG and that would likely be on Tuesday nights b/c GG has been doing well there. So right now that's the projected Tuesday lineup.

But it certainly would help if VM showed just a slight uptick when it moves to the Tuesday night slot on April 11, vs. what it's been doing on Wed nights. Everybody likes to point to Lost as the main reason VM has been doing less than expected numbers on Wed nights, but if it doesn't improve on Tuesdays, then it's obviously not just Lost that is the problem.

In sum, watch VM when it moves to Tuesdays. Tell your friends who watch Lost to start watching VM on Tuesdays. And so on. Hopefully it will pick up in the ratings just a tiny bit at least.

In the same EW issue, Stephen King has an article on his TV addictions and he lists six shows. (I don't think they are in order - VM is listed second, although he says that Lost is the best show on network TV).

The Shield
Veronica Mars
Lost
Battlestar Galactica
The Sopranos

According to Weevil, he got an anonymous phone call a few weeks after the crash telling him that the Fitzpatricks hired Curly to stage the bus crash in order to kill Cervando, the PCHer who allegedly scammed Liam Fitzpatrick out of three grand. Neither Weevil nor Veronica believe that's true (killing a bus full of kids over three grand? not likely), but who made that call to Weevil and why? And the call came from Logan's house during a party that apparently most of the town attended, including members of the Sheriff's department when they showed up on a noise complaint or something.
I rewatched all the episodes from this season so I could refresh myself on all the plotlines, and I have a theory. I'm thinking Thumper was the one who called Weevil, because the people who crashed Logan's party were the PCHers and the call to Weevil came from Logan's house. It fits, but as to whether it's right is another thing.

"Dad, your hooker's here!"

Haha.

It was nice to see Michael Cera and Alia Shawkat from Arrested Development in this episode.

Anyhow, loved the "18 - It's Legal" flyer that Keith and the guy with with a crazy deep radio voice gave to Lamb.

So now they have placed Wallace at Hearst College for next season, and we have to assume that VM will also find her way stuck in Neptune by some strange twist of fate that will make sense.

I almost felt bad for Logan losing Hannah...almost.

The rest of stuff with the rape case on the campus was okay, but I wanted more of the macro-mystery stuff, and they only touched upon it at the very end with Danny Boy having access to C4 because he works construction.
Another solid episode. Very little macro, but they definitely hinted at stuff during the final act. It was also good to see Aaron Ashmore again. His character was a tool, but I thought he was a pretty good foil for VM. Keith and the lawyer ganging up on Lamb was classic. I did feel a bit sorry for Logan, but he's still a bastard.
Cliff is cool. It's always a pleasure when he shows up in an ep.
Any idea where they filmed the Hearst College scenes? It kind of looked like what was used for "Beverly Hills High" on 90210 (which I think was Occidental College).

I thought that was an interesting episode overall. I agree, it was good to see Michael Cera and Alia Shawkat post Arrested Development.

I assume when the article states that the season ends on April 15, they either mean shooting wraps, or they are in error. At least according to epguides, there are enough shows to last into May.

The Cliff subplot ties into the big mystery: his briefcase contains the Logan Echolls file, which connects it to the Fitzpatricks, who are almost certainly involved with the bus crash. The question is how exactly these pieces fit together.

As for the rape case, that's set-up for next season so I'm more tollerant of it than for the runaway bride story last week.

Having never seen Arrested Development, I just looked up those two actors on IMDB, and they're both eight years younger than Kristen Bell!

Last night was episode 16 for this season, so there should be 6 more new episodes left.
