Looks great, easier to spot, and yet takes up less space...

Test to see if it is possible to replace the word "quote" with the author's name and in a smaller font size...

And it's retroactive!
How do they do that?

No, really, I don't want to know.

My only concern is the small font size of the quotes; that combined with the grey background makes the original text harder to read.

So what do you think of it with a bold face? I want to keep the text size down so that the quoted text doesn't take up the whole post as many people quote entire paragraphs.

Perhaps its just me, but making the small text bold makes it much harder to read as it causes letters to blurr into each other.

I think it's better bold, sticks out more.

Nice work mon capitaine, it's greet mon.

I also prefer bold. Nils makes a good point about there being less space between the letters, but like Steve I prefer it sticking out more; it solved my initial problem quite nicely.
Thanks for all the great work, Parker!

This bold makes the smaller text much easier to read. I'd prefer a bigger size, but the bold is a nice compromise.

It's not just you Nils, it's me too.

I can live with it, but I preferred the old style.

Lose the bold.
I would get rid of the bold, and use maybe a different tipeface for better legibility, if it were I. Another pica of tipe size could hardly hurt. Maybe increased kerning would do the trick? Now I'm trying to make it do that thing with the name! I've tried everything obvious... except this...

Nope, still not it.

What about now?

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
"'Tis some visitor," I muttered, "tapping at my chamber door-
Only this, and nothing more."

I liked the bold, but this is easier on the eye and would also look good when copying a choice snippet from a news report or movie review.

Pretty good. My big concern is legibility.

I liked the simplicity and elegance of the old style.

Of course as with all changes, I will eventually get used to this.

Still, I prefer the old, sorry.

The work is appreciated.

Does anyone even remember the old style? Blissfully gone from my memory already, but than I can't even remember what I ate 2 hours ago...

Parker, thanks for the ongoing efforts to improve HTF. Your diligence is impressive.

I'm ambivalent about the new quote style. It seems to take less space than the old style, which is I like. And it's different, which is also fun, for its own sake.

But I find the combination of a "quote" label, beveled edging, gray body, and italic text too much. The quote is quadruply emphasized over the surrounding message, drawing too much attention to itself.

And the italic text is harder to read than normal text or the earlier, small-bold text.

I suggest removing some of the extra emphatics: Keeping the text normal instead of italic could help and will (for me) improve legibility. Using a lighter shade of gray, improving contrast, might also improve legibility. And while the beveled edges look good for the moment, I believe they will become less attractive after the novelty wears off. You could experiment with flatter designs.

This may be a tired subject, but the top two HTF features on my "wish these could be improved" list are the search system and front page. I think improving / fixing the search engine would provide members the single greatest value of any HTF upgrade. And re-designing the front page could make it usable, subsequently drawing more members to it, and increasing ad impressions.

Dave:

The search engine is a problem for the writers of vBulletin. Hopefully once they get their current version out of beta I will be moving us over to it.

How would you suggest we re-design the front page?
Here's a thought: can you just remove the "Quote:" bit? Since it's on this special background, in a special tipeface, we all realise it's a quote, hopefully.

EDIT: ooh, I like that!

That would be great! I didn't know if it was something you could tackle or not.

Oh hey! I just noticed that the style changed (thanks to Christopher's comment). I like the default style best, as shown by Steve in the first of his four examples. Indeed, I think that works quite well! Nice job.

As for the front page, I'll try to put some productive thoughts up later tonight. I should probably get some work done.

Considering the quotes are usually used as a reference to text found earlier in the thread or to a linked source, perhaps legibility isn't critical. Personally, my favorite of all the designs was the very first one that Parker made - shaded box with 1pt font - no italics or bold face:

The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog.

Uses less space, but is still legible. Regardless, the shaded box is a nice touch.
