That's it, I'm walking. gas up 33 cents since Monday, - Page 72

winter gouging has begun. end of last week we were 2.16. this week its 2.45
post #2132 of 2203
For most of September, the price at the corner store nearest my home was $2.71.  After weeks at that price, it dropped to $2.67, then $2.63 and then a week or so ago to $2.57.  Hallelujah!

A couple of days ago, it jumped right back up to $2.67.

Other stations in the area where down in the low $2.50s and even $2.40s.  This, though, is the station I drive by every single day (in upstate NY).
We're still about $2.60. My mental pocketbook says every week we're closer to $2.50 than $4.00 is a good week for me :)
I don't buy gas much but I just paid $2.50 in suburban Philadelphia.

Agree completely, except my brain puts that acceptable range at being closer to $2.25 than $3.00.  I liked the direction prices were inching before this recent spike.

The last time I was in Buffalo. gas prices were circa 19 cents a gallan! - that was circa in the 60s - I assume it is more now! I live in germany and don't need a car!Munich transportation system is very good and train travel is very good. It is possible to go by train from Munich and Vienna for circa 29 Euros (about $41).I believe super ( no reguler) is circa 1.31 Euros/liter. In Austria it is about 20 cent less. Switzerland is slight cheaper than Austria.

Now that same station jumped (three days after the above post) to $2.83!    A 16-cent jump from breakfast to lunch.

This is getting ugly...fast!

Well...if I thought it was ugly back in October, 2009...it is even uglier now.

For most of 2010...our average regional price (Albany, NY area) hung in the $2.79 area.  But things started to change in the autumn as prices crept to $2.99/gallon.  In the past few weeks, however, they have been rising steadily to the point many local stations are now at a $3.24/gallon pricepoint for a gallon of regular.  It seems like prices are now going up a few cents every other day.  Ugh.

Well, just be happy you aren't in Canada (for the fuel prices only that is smile.gif ). We are sitting at $1.11/litre which equals $4.21/gallon. At one point a couple of summers ago we were at $1.55/litre or a whopping $5.87/gallon.

My friend was telling me they pay almost $8 US dollars in Manchester for petrol. YIKES!

As hard as you might be trying, you guys aren't making me feel any better!  laugh.gif

I always hate it when we cross another artificial barrier ($3/gallon) with the potential of never returning underneath it.

Yep. I've got a car service app for my iPhone that tracks my mileage: the fuel price graph shows my breaking $3/gal about a couple weeks ago, and it's been a pretty steady rise the past three months. I need gas today; wonder what the price will be?

That's been one good thing about this recession: a reprieve from the 2008 gas prices :)

I think that in January, once people aren't traveling as much and they don't have the holidays to focus on, gas prices will also just happen to come back down to under $3.

$2.82 at work today. Surrounding areas range from 4 to 9 cents more. I unfortunately have to fill up twice a week due to my job being far from me.

I don't know. The news reports say there is plenty of oil and gasoline supply in the marketplace, and the demand is actually down since September. Yet prices have jumped nearly 40 cents/gal. Generally around $3.15 here. Jumped up about 10 cents in one day last week.

If these are the prices in a deep recession, imagine what we'll pay if the economy ever gets healthy again.

We've been in the off-season for a while, so this isn't typical.  (Is it?)  Not that anything is typical any more.  As for that $3 threshold, that became the New Normal a long time ago.  It'll dip below that now and then, but never by much, and it'll never again stay down there.  (I live in one of the most expensive states for gas --never mind a lot of other things-- so I'm already used to seeing that "3" everywhere.)

My understanding was the previous run-up was from futures speculation and exchange rates, not primarily driven by physical supply and demand.

I wonder if the current price variation is due to any number of things besides actual supply restrictions?

Ehhh, they just want to gouge us for Christmas!

Probably time for us to pay for the gulf clean up too.

Where's that, Lucia?  I'd go for $2.82 right about now...

Last night it was $2.69 here in Tulsa. It has been about $2.50 to .70ish all summer and fall...so far.

$3.07 tonight. A bit cheaper than the past week or two.

The news kept reporting oil prices were dropping.  Prices at the gas station I pass on the way to work did drop down to 2.85.  But the station near where I live stayed at 3.01 for three months straight.  Except for the few days where it went up to 3.05.  Yesterday it jumped to 3.15.

I really hate, and don't understand the reasoning for gas prices.  I can understand how a major car route might have more expensive gas than one in a more residential area, except that's not how it works, at least around here.  In fact there is one pocket area in a major shopping area where gas stations are consistently ten cents cheaper.  Checking the maps now, prices are showing as 2.82 and 2.87, with a number of them peaking at 3.03.  But I don't go anywhere near those.  Mine are 3.15 and 3.11.

The killer is my city repealed the gas tax a few years back.  Gas SHOULD be cheaper in my area but it's still more expensive than in nearby communities.  Like those still surfing in the 2.80s.

At least I don't live in Chicago where gas has hit 3.50.

...and back down to 3.01 again today.

I'm sure there's an entirely logical reason for spiking the price of gas up 15 cents for two days before returning to it's 'normal' price, but I sure the hell don't know what it is.

That sure hasn't happened here...but I'll be sure to let you know if it does.  I sure HOPE it does!
