Yes, I remember that rumor...may have come from Marvel itself. And I liked that title a lot better than what we eventually got.

So hopefully the sequel to Batman The Dark Knight will be Batman The Dark Knight Returns. That's the movie I can't wait to see. With Frank Miller scripting it of course.

Have you read anything from his current Bat title?

I think it's sort of awkward changing title schemes mid-series, but it IS a pretty bitchin' title. I'm just glad the thing is officially on everybody's front burner. I also think Heath Ledger will make a great early, hoodlum Joker.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

I love the title, but I have doubts that the movie won't eventually be called "Batman: The Dark Knight." Then again, I could be pleasantly surprised. This and Spidey 3 are my two most anticipated films for sure.

And I wouldn't count on "The Dark Knight Returns" being adapted for the big screen anytime soon, considering it deals with an old, retired Batman. I'd love to see it someday though.

"I'm the ****ing BATMAN!!"
I've been anticipating this movie since the credits for Batman Begins rolled.

Wow. I just watched this again over the weekend with a friend who had never seen it, who's a major fan of the Burton films. BB's rewatchability astounds me. I'm looking forward to The Dark Knight..

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

That didnt take long. I just told someone at work about the title and Heath and he replied right away with a Brokeback Gotham comment.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

For those you who liked Batman Begins but haven't gotten into the Batman comics, there are two really good ways to jump into the comics right now.

The first is to go out and buy Batman #655 by Grant Morrison and Andy Kubert. Morrison is a legend in the comic book community, and his first issue is both a great read and a good jump on point.

The second is to pick up the "Face 2 Face" story that appeared in Batman #651-654 and Detective Comics #817-820. This is the first Batman story that appeared after DC's big "Infinite Crisis" event, and it's a major reboot (and a welcome one) for Batman's character. Also a great jumping on point.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

Well, do they even really need the title for anything except marketing purposes. I mean, technically does "Batman Begins" ever actually appear anywhere in the actual film? I thought we just had that Batman-made-out-of-bats symbol at the beginning of the movie and then we're off. Unless it's stealthly in the credits and I just didn't see it.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

"Batman Begins" is shown at the very end, once um, Batman begins

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

So why the Joker as the next adversary ? Anyone honestly think Heath Ledger can "outjoke" Jack Nicholson ??????

With all the potential villains, don't mess with the best from the orignals....

" Anyone honestly think Heath Ledger can "outjoke" Jack Nicholson ??????"

Maybe in a film grounded in reality, where theyre looking for a sinister Joker instead of campy overtopness.

I think this is going to be very different from any Joker weve seen before.

No purple suit, but a black suit,no lipstick, very dark green hair, peeled back lips revelaing black gums, psychopath whos only funny to himself - something like that.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

I am guessing that Ledger's "Joker" will be completely different from Nicholson's. Nolan and company have shown me that they know what they are doing, and the AWESOME title just confirms my faith even more.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

If I were going to do a 'realistic' Joker- I would dispense with the 'falling into a vat of chemicals' origin. I would concentrate on what he does for the first act- i.e. what is that something extra that he does that seperates him from a general murderer- motivation, deliberation, execution, etc
and as he gets more theatrical in his approach, I would have him 'dress up' for the final confrontation- the white face, the green hair etc used for a specific occassion-

and although it would be a cliche- you could then have the scene at the end of the film where the doctors at the asylum comment that the substances, he used unwittingly, were so toxic, that they permently destroyed his skin color (or some rationale like that- Ha Ha , joke was on him)

From then on, I would have him purposefully, dye his hair, whenever he wanted to 'get himself into character'. Without his hair being permently dyed, he has a better chance at playing the repentant, remoresful, 'victim' to gain sympathy and advantage in certain situations. Green hair, bright red lips- sends the character over the top, which is fine for certain situations, but it also dilutes his effectiveness if hes seen all the time like that. However, there are plenty of people with Albinoism, or de-pigmentation, that seeing someone with a ghostly pale complexion is not too unnatural, or -for Nolans purposes-unrealistic.

some of the creepiest passages in the comics I read as a kid, were where the Joker was impersonating someone- a delivery man, cop, etc- no white face, no green hair. Just the physical structure of his face- and the fact that he had obviously circumvented efforts to be on the look out for him.

25 years ago, Poltergiest was released and that remains one of the scariest movies I ever remember seeing- and that was PG. Would love to see them present the character as terrifying. The best thing they could do is to have news stories playing up the fact this 'isn't a movie for children'. They need a version of the Joker character out there that can honestly give most kids nightmares. there are plenty of sanitized versions of the character out there in other media for the consumption of those under 12- to keep the adult audience that gave the first film its legs- they need to make a clear distinction with this material.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

Why do so many people think Nicholson's Joker was so great? If you want to see a great depiction of the Joker go watch Batman TAS. Nicholson was campy and unfunny. And whoever thought of the stupid ideas of him getting shot in the face and being stuck w/ a permanent grin as well as having him kill Bruce Wayne's parents should be banned from ever working in film again. I thought the whole point of getting Jack Nicholson was because he had a famous grin and then you hide it behind ridiculous makeup. Just plain stupid.
As far as Ledger goes, I never thought about him for the role but I trust the people involved with these films. I'm sure I won't see any bat nipples, bat credit cards or corny dialogue.

Love the title! This is easily my most anticipated movie of the next few years. It's gonna be hard waiting until '08 to see it...

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

I'm pretty irked this hasn't shown up on HD DVD yet.
I sold my regular dvd off in April, expecting this to be one of the earliest releases and we're getting announcements for late August and there's still no sign of it. Like Stephen Orr, I'm extremely impressed and surprised how re-watchable this movie has been- and with all the chatter about the next one, I'm jonesin to pop BB in again right now.

wish I could

Its been on HBO HD lately. Ive watched it a few times.

Very rewatchable.

Agree. Crane had the ability to make himself interesting enough to want to know more about him, then at the same time-make you want to take him outside and beat the s___t out of him. Hard to accomplish that. Probably a bigger nod goes to the writing of BB.

Relax - it hasn't even been made yet. They only announced the casting yesterday.

Personally, I don't get the love for Nicholson's Joker either. Never read the comics, so I can't compare the character portrayal to that, but just as a movie character, he never worked for me. I still enjoy the film, but would be delighted to have a decent Joker on screen. Nicholson never really seemed terribly threatening to me. And I think Heath Ledger should be interesting.

I believe he's talking about Batman Begins

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

Well, I don't care what anyone says. I thought Nicholson was FANTASTIC as The Joker and he made the movie as far as I'm concerned. Sure it was over the top, but that's what the role called for and he delivered the way nobody else could. I'm not too thrilled with the announcement of Ledger in the new role, but I'm willing to be open-minded and give him a chance. If the sequel is anywhere close to as good as BB then I will be very pleased.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

I really don't think the issue is whether or not Ledger will be a worthy follow up to Nicholson, because I'm willing to bet that the Joker character will be drastically different in "The Dark Night" than he was in Burton's "Batman." I have no issues with how Nicholson played the Joker, because I'm sure he played it as the character was written. However, I do have a problem with how the character was written in the first place. That's the main problem that needs to be rectified. Too over the top for me, and I'm really looking forward to Nolan's take on him.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

How over-the-top was Nicholson's portrayel of the Joker? That so-called Tim Burton film should have been called The Joker instead of Batman. That's how over-the-top it was.

I was about to post the same thing Brett, but you said it much better. My thoughts exactly.

I thought of Silence of the Lambs when I read this, and then of course Clerks 2.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

taken with a grain of salt-

there was a comment attributed to a concept artist supposedly involved with the production who described the Joker via Nolans take as a self mutilating psychopath who cracks tasteless jokes that only he himself finds funny.

also- The Penguin is supposed to be in this too- A british arms dealer, presumably involved in some way with filling the void left by Falcone.
This part has me just as excited as the presence of the Joker- maybe even moreso as it would point to plot continuity with the first film, which is also something substantial that we haven't seen yet in a Batman film ( I don't count a stray throw away reference to an earlier film as very strong continuity).

and has anyone commented on Ryan Phillipe as a candidate for Gotham DA Harvey Dent?

If this is how they introduce the Penguin, I'm all for it. I wonder how Nolan will give him that nickname without making him seem like a joke, though. Phillip Seymour Hoffman is the rumored choice for this role, and I think he'd be great.

Not a choice I like at all. Dent/Two Face needs to be a strong, threatening presence, and Phillipe is too soft-spoken and mild for the role. Liev Schreiber or Clive Owen would be great for it, IMNSHO.
