Batman Begins' sequel: The Dark Knight (Merged) - Page 11

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

If I had a dream list for Bat-villains (or see Nick's post):

Philip Seymour Hoffman - Penguin (or Scarface )
Paul Bettany - The Joker
Clive Owen - Two-Face

I might check out the MTV movie awards just to see that. Nice touch. As much as I despise MTV, they usually get stuff like that right (presenters, gags, etc). Good for Bale to get some love.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

It's the first award of the night, so you don't have to slog through much, except for a spoof on Mission Impossible 3 at the start of the show.

For starters, I do recommend Batman: Black and White (two volumes total). A bunch of short stories with no continuity to live up to. There are some great stoires in there, along with some great art.

Batman: Year One is fantastic, the gold standard, really.

The Dark Knight Returns is probably amongst the greatest stories ever told in the medium, but it's not your standard Batman story. But it's EPIC and then some.

Most fans love Batman: The Long Halloween and it's sequel, Dark Victory. I like them myself.

Batman: The Killing Joke is stunningly drawn, and a pretty good tale regardless.

I am a huge fan of the World's Finest mini-series from the early 90's (written by Gibbons, drawn by Rude). It's the very essence of Superman and Batman. Also beautiful to look at.

Amazon should have some folks top ten lists for you to peruse. Read the descriptions, and pick what you like.

I am longtime Batman fan, but never read the comics as a kid. My start was the tv series...I was in for a shock in '89 at the difference.

Anyway, BB got me hooked on the character again and I immediately left the theater and headed to the Borders next door and picked up YEAR ONE.

Since then, I have picked up YEAR ONE, HUSH, THE LONG HALLOWEEN, DARK VICTORY, ARKHAM ASYLUM (serious House/earth) and THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS.

I finally got around to ordering THE KILLING JOKE last week and received it today, used, for $24.

The copy I got was a thin edition that has the Joker on the cover holding a camera to his face. Did I get the entire story or just a volume of it? I have not read it yet, but it seems to be just to small to be the entire story.

That is the whole story. The Killing Joke was published as a square-bound one-shot title in 1988.

He probably does get a kick out of playing Batman/Bruce Wayne in the movies. (and yes, it was cool to have been presented the award by the cast of Superman Returns (Routh, Bosworth, Spacey).

That was great. And to add. He also thanked Warner for bringing dignity back to Batman...(ie-no bat nipples).

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

You can also find The Killing Joke in the Collected Tales of Alan Moore. Not only does it have that, but it also has a really excellent Superman story: Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?

In terms of the monthly comics, Legends of the Dark Knight is pretty good for anyone who doesn't want to worry about continuity.

Anyone read any new news on BB2?

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

No. But Nolan is polishing up The Prestige, and once that is released (this year), I imagine script work, casting, etc will begin in earnest.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

I hope this is just a rumor, but apparently Heath Ledger has been signed to play The Joker. LatinoReview.com is reporting this.

I hope this is just early and not true, while I like Heath Ledger I just don't feel he's right for The Joker. I have my heart set on Bettany, though because I have my heart set on him it probably won't happen.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

Hmmm. Well, not my first choice or someone I even thought of. I'm gonna need some time with this rumor.

Here's another site that's reporting it as well:

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

Just read about the Ledger rumor. Count me as initially liking it. Ledger has the acting chops, the energy, and the screen presence to do it. I'm willing - for now - to put some trust in Nolan's writing and casting choices. And to give Ledger and those involved a left-handed compliment, it could be much, much worse.

If this is true, I'm glad they're going for a younger Joker; I like the idea of Joker and Batman starting their careers at roughly the same time, and like the story ideas it opens up for both to make mistakes and get to know each other and their own "business."

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

have a hard time believing its accurate, but if it is, I don't have a problem with it. Bettany is a bit overplayed as a villain these days. And yes, Ledger has the chops and can be very charming onscreen, a quality that all the best homicidal maniacs have, imo

______

actually the LR story only claims he was offered the role, not that he accepted or signed for it.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

Nolan put together a really great cast for BB and I think (if true) that casting Ledger as the "Clown Prince of Crime" is a stroke of genius. The guy is a great actor and he has the right look for the role. I can't wait to see who Nolan casts as Harvey Dent.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

Ledger would be a bit out of left field. But he can act, he has a good face, and Nolan cast BB just fine. I would be happy if he were offered the role and accepted.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

If you've seen Ledger in Casanova, you'd see a lighter, more whimsical side of his acting abilities.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

Initial reaction is that he fits Harvey Dent more than the Joker. I dunno. We'll see.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

I didn't have a preference with the casting of this character but even I have to admit that Ledger didn't enter into my mind. Still, if it is true, it's REALLY interesting to say the least.

It's definitely intriquing. I'm with it if it turns out to be true.

He's too young to fit Dent's qualifications. But if the Joker's just starting out as a thug with theatrical flourish, I could see Ledger pulling it off. It really depends if he can do the Voice. I don't need exactly Mark Hamill's take, but something in that ballpark.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

I think Ledger certainly looks the part. He's got a wide smile, and has stare that can be very menacing. More importantly, he can act.

I'm interested to see how Nolan portrays the character, moreso than which actor fills the role.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

After thinking it over a little I'll admit I'm a bit worried. My gut instinct shouted out no. After giving it some thought I'm now a bit more open about it. I was hoping for someone a bit more freaky and when I read the news today my thoughts turned to the first 4 Batman movies. I'll probably start having nightmares about the film now. Anyone able to photoshop a Joker face onto him?

One thing I do think will happen is that whoever gets the role will forever be compared to Jack Nicholson. I can already see the flame wars.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

Not my first choice so I am ambivalent. His rage scene in Brokeback when his ex-wife mentions his reunion with Jake's character was well done though so I do have some hope.

I'm looking forward to the comparisions myself, as Nicholson has never really done anything for me (in this role in the actual film- in the trailers I thought he was a grand slam home run).

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

IGN is saying that this could be confirmed this weekend at Comic-Con by Nolan himself. They sound pretty sure that this is the real deal, so...

As others have said, not my first choice, but that's only because I never considered Ledger. This could be another stroke of brilliance on Nolan's part. Even though Ledger doesn't seem particularly menacing or insane enough for the part, I'm sure Nolan will bring it out of him.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

I hope this won't happen. I can't stand Heath Ledger as an actor.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

Ledger is an Oscar nominated actor. I'm sure the script will allow him to play the character I doubt Nolan picked him from a selection of mugshots based on his looks. They probably met, Nolan discussed his vision of the Joker, Ledger bought into it and committed (if the rumors are true).

A definite different choice from Nicholson...which is a very good thing.

Who would have thunk the kid from Roar would be playing the Joker opposite Christian Bale???

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

Batman-On-Film.com confirms it this morning. It's Ledger was The Joker.

I'm still trying to wrap my mind around this choice but I still think it's absolutely interesting and intriquing....

good choice IMO

Ledger never entered my mind as The Joker.

I have full faith in Christopher Nolan.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

Is it too late to hope for a menacing, darker version of Harley Quinn? I know many think that she's too light of a character to fit the darker tone of the movies, but with some tinkering to the character I think she could be great, in a scary homicidal way.
