Batman Begins' sequel: The Dark Knight (Merged) - Page 10

Clive Owen would be a brilliant choice for Harvey. Looking at him in Sin City as Dwight and you can easily see him adopting to both sides of Harvey Dent/Two Face.

I still think Mark Hamil's Joker needs some reference in the movie. Hamil easily has the best on-screen portrayal of the Joker ever and deserves to have some sort of recognition. Don't think he could actually play the part, doesn't look the part, but he should get something.

Of all the choices for Dent mentioned here, I think Schreiber or Owen are far and away the best. They are both good actors. They're both good-looking, which is important when Dent is disfigured (as well as being good for BO), and both can be physically imposing and convincingly menacing. I'm not at all convinced that Jake Gyllenhal can really emote menace and danger.

I want either a talented character actor to play the Joker or an unknown. I think Depp would be a terrible choice, frankly. Of the names I can recall off the top of my head, the two that seem best are Bettany and Crispin Glover.

That version of the joker was the best because of both the visuals of the animated series AND Hamil's voice work. I think he'd be a terrible choice WRT playing the role in a live action film, but his voice work absolutely rocked.

Hamill could play the Joker's first victim. That would have a certain punch to it.

Or you can have Hamill dressing up as the Joker to cover for his crimes and have the real Joker take out the "imitator".

Well having been addicted to the character for almost 30 years now, and honestly i think Nolan nailed it right , love the whole grounded approach, the only thing that bothers me is i understand the desire to "keep it real" and that is what makes BB so good, but this charter is all so in the same universe as Singers Superman which means that some things have to give way Lazarus pit anyone??, so just remember as people are selected, that they might show up later somewhere else. and best choice for dent hands down is Liev Schreiber

I really hope they make some kind of reference to Bale's Batman in the new Superman film. A picture and headline on a previous paper. You can even have Lois or Jimmy make a comment about it to Clark when he returns. Something like I guess Superman isn't the only person running around in a costume.

I hope we soon get a confirmation on a sequel,
and yeah, Clive would be great as Two Face.

A bit OT:

Since there are so many Batman books out there, where's a good place to start? I'm looking for the top ten list of stories, comic or novel, that are still available for purchase at amazon. Same goes for Superman

Thanks!

Neil,
Depends on your taste, or why you are interested? None of us can even agree totally.

For starters, I do recommend Batman: Black and White (two volumes total). A bunch of short stories with no continuity to live up to. There are some great stoires in there, along with some great art.

Batman: Year One is fantastic, the gold standard, really.

The Dark Knight Returns is probably amongst the greatest stories ever told in the medium, but it's not your standard Batman story. But it's EPIC and then some.

Most fans love Batman: The Long Halloween and it's sequel, Dark Victory. I like them myself.

Batman: The Killing Joke is stunningly drawn, and a pretty good tale regardless.

I am a huge fan of the World's Finest mini-series from the early 90's (written by Gibbons, drawn by Rude). It's the very essence of Superman and Batman. Also beautiful to look at.

Amazon should have some folks top ten lists for you to peruse. Read the descriptions, and pick what you like.

don't forget Batman Illustrated by Neal Adams.
it collects all of Neals Batman material (covers and stories from various titles from the late 60's-70s).
Neal was one of the most iconic Batman artists, and the stories (many written by Denny O'Neil, another Batman all star) in volume 3 are cream of the crop- included is a definitive Joker story, and the first appearences of Ras al Ghul among many, many others.

kinda pricey, but Amazon has a good discount on it- and its all quality material.

Another classic collection would be Strange Apparitions, which collects the Steve Englehart/Marshall Rogers run from the 70's.

For alternate or non-continuity takes of Batman, Gotham by Gaslight, Red Rain/Bloodstorm/Crimson Mist and Arkham Asylum (artwork by the incredible Dave McKean) are all worth reading, IMO. Child of Dreams is a pretty great straightforward tale, but it's drawn in a quite striking black and white by famed manga artist Kia Asamiya. And as said above me, Batman: Year One and The Dark Knight Returns (the alpha and omega of Batman stories) are required reading.

That's one of the great things about being a Batman fan: there's an insane amount of quality material.

Like Matt said. Try to find some Elsewhere issues. One I liked was where the Waynes find young Kal-El's rocket. And when his parents are killed he gets so mad. He heatvisions the guys face off. He then becomes Batman with Supermans abilities.

That's Batman: Speeding Bullets. There is yet another Elseworlds where Bruce Wayne finds a certain ring called Batman: In Darkest Night.
Neal Adams depiction of Batman is the definitive version to me.
The funniest thing about the Elseworlds was when they went through that "Batman in [insert historical setting]" phase. So there would be like a Civil War Batman, or a Feudal Japan Batman, or Medieval England Batman. The ultimate, I think, was when they did the Viking Batman.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

From Dark Horizons:

Quote:
The 32nd Annual Saturn Awards took place this week in Los Angeles, and IESB was on site chatting with the talent that turned up about the current status and plans for their upcoming genre projects....Chris Nolan confirmed they "have come up with a great story" for the "Batman Begins" sequel and his work on "The Prestige" at present has allowed him not to worry about casting at this time - essentially rubbishing all the rumours up until this point.

http://www.darkhorizons.com/news06/060504j.php

While no official word that Nolan is the director, it sound like he's wanting and expecting to direct the sequel - good news, as far as I'm concerned.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

Nolan is a must. I haven't given the possibility of him NOT doing the sequel any thought And until something official is announced, all of the casting "announcements" are mere speculation.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

They need to start moving on this movie...So we can have a summer 07 release...Unless they are holding that date for Wonder Woman.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

I thought it was going to be a June 2008 release?

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

It's tentatively scheduled for 2008, I believe. It was never planned for 2007.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

i've heard that Nolans brother is writing the actual script from a story by Nolan and Goyer.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

What I would like to see in the next 3 years from Warner...

Superman (sequel)
Batman (sequel)
Wonder Woman
Flash (by Goyer starring Ryan Reynolds)

Then a JLA with the above or at least a "Trinity" movie with Supes, Bats & WW.

plus-If they want to through in a Hal Jordan Green Lantern movie. I would be all for that too.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

Man, Batman Begins gets better every time I watch it. I have the soundtrack cranking in the background right now.

This is easily my most anticipated sequel, and I cannot wait to see how they implement what I consider to be the best vilian in the history of comics. I also am willing to bet that Bale is going to take the character of Batman to a whole new level in the next film.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

I think seeing the shot from the MTV awards (with Brandon Routh, Christian Bale, and Kevin Spacey) got me thinking about the Batman sequel, and I apologize if someone has suggest this already, but how about Joaquin Phoenix for the Joker?

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

Think I read on Batman On Film, that the Joker role, in terms of screen time, is going to be relatviely small. Nothing like the situation with Nicholson. More of a mysterious part.

if thats accurate, I highly approve!

they also said, WB execs presented Nolan with a list of candidates for the role including Lachy Hulme (who apparently tested?), and Jude Law, and others -but not Paul Bettany. But these are just 'suggestions' and WB seems to be giving Nolan a lot of leeway to make his own choices now.

nothing but postive news as far as I'm concerned.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

Jude Law would own the role. He was awsome in Road to Perdition and I could see him pulling off the Joker.

Third try at this is hopefully a charm... grrr at Firefox.

Batman - Year One - Written by Frank Miller - This is where Goyer and Nolan got their basic groundwork for Batman Begins.

Batman - The Long Halloween - Written by Jeph Loeb - This is Batman - Year Two. A really good story, good work writting both Batman and Bruce and the conflict between the two. Also just a good detective story. It's very noir-ish and Tim Sale does good on drawing very noir like visuals.

Batman - Dark Victory - Written by Jeph Loeb - Batman - Year Three, essentially. This is a direct sequel to The Long Halloween. This is the start of really introducing Batman's cast of freak villians. We also get the origin of Robin in here. Nearly as good as TLH with still great visuals.

The Greatest Batman Stories Ever Told - A collection of Batman stories from '39 to the 80's, interesting to see how Batman has evolved over the years.

Superman/Batman - Vol. 1 - This is a 21st Century version of the World's Finest stuff, written by Jeph Loeb also, the art is by Ed McGuiness, I've met Ed a couple of times he's a nice guy and lives about 2 hours from me up in Maine, so I'm a bit biased and that's really the only reason why I'm recommending this, the story isn't the best thing ever but it's neat to see how Jeph writes the differences between Clark and Bruce.

As for Clive Owen as Harvey / Two-Face, if it happens I'll be more than happy, I like Clive he's a good actor, not bigger than Christian build wise and you always see him in suits and dress clothes so it wouldn't be too hard for him.

I still want Paul Bettany as The Joker. After seeing him in The Da Vinci Code (Paul was probably the only interesting one in that movie) I think he needs a chance to play a downright psychotic character. Now if we can just get Mrs. Bettany er - Jen Connelly to play Catwoman or some sort of vixen in the movie I'll be happy.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

Batman Begins 2 is easily my most anticipated movie. The first was a triumph, and the set up for a sequel was just brilliant.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel (Merged)

On the MTV Movie Awards, Christian Bale won the Best Hero category, and he sort of rambled on in his normal English accent (kinda thick, actually) in his acceptance speech, and he did assure the audience that there were be more Batman movies (and was appreciative of the audiences taking to the rebirth of Batman on celluloid). He probably does get a kick out of playing Batman/Bruce Wayne in the movies. (and yes, it was cool to have been presented the award by the cast of Superman Returns (Routh, Bosworth, Spacey).
