Batman Begins' sequel: The Dark Knight (Merged) - Page 72

Re: Batman Begins' sequel: The Dark Knight (Merged)

And I just have to wonder, with all the praise this movie has been getting, will anyone start talking Oscar nominations for more than just Heath Ledger and a possible Best Picture nod? I mean, if the movie is so good to get Godfather II comparisons, how can it not even get thought of for a Best Picture nomination.

Has anyone already got their tickets for the IMAX showing on the Friday? A friend of mine tried on Thursday for a 7:00 showing but already sold out. Now I'm wondering if I should just see it first regular then again in IMAX.

Roeper said the film is so good that it definitely warrants Best Picture consideration.

And I was at Wal-Mart. Doesn't get more real world than that...

Friday I went to downtown Toronto to see the Tumbler and BatPod, positioned outside a movie theater (the only Toronto theater that will screen the IMAX version) and as I arrived I had to pass hundreds of baseball fans walking to the game. I saw more New Yorkers (Yankee fans) than fans of the local team (Blue Jays). That was telling...

I just watched the Phillips and Roeper review and they were both effusive in their praise. All of these extremely positive reviews are beginning to worry me. This was by far my most anticipated movie of the summer and all of these great reviews makes me concerned I'm in for a let down. Surely it can't meet these grand expectations, but boy do I hope that it does.

I dunno...these overwhelmingly positive reviews are actually only adding to my anticipation of this film. Just looking at the Rotten Tomatoes tally can be deceptive, because reviews can skew positive while also pointing out substantial flaws. The nearly 80% rating Indiana Jones had was largely built on reviews saying "Well...it could've been a lot worse! 3 stars."

Actually reading through these reviews, though, these critics seem really, genuinely blown away. Guys writing for major magazines are sounding a little like giddy fanboys. That's a VERY good sign to me.

I refuse to read reviews & web chatter about this movie. I didn't even read anything in this thread. I glanced away until I got to the bottom of this page.

Then why am I in here?

Just to encourage all of you to do the same.

Everyone is pumped about this film. Don't let it be ruined by reading web sites & reviews. Reviewers these days do nothing more than rehash & condense the entire plot.

I can't believe I'll be watching this on Friday morning in an IMAX theater at 6:30 a.m.

Me neither, I didn't even read your post, I only picked out this quote by throwing a dart at the screen.
Someone off the street read that line to me.
What thread is this?

Yeah, I swear my friend has seen most of the movie already.

I've avoided trailers, commercials, pics, etc. for all the movies that I was pre-sold on this summer (Indy IV, Iron Man, The Dark Knight, The X-Files, etc.) and it's been great to actually be surprised by the stuff in a movie rather than sit there in the theater and think "Oh, Iron Man still has to fight the *fill in the blank* like I saw in the trailer" or "Oh, this is the clip I saw online where Indiana Jones has to *fill in the blank*" or "Oh, here's where Wall E bangs that girl robot like I read online".

Harsh review (tons of criticism) - but I think it will still rate a positive at RT.

I think referring to someone who doesn't like a movie, in particular one most of us haven't seen yet, a 'jerk' is a bit harsh, don't you?

For reference, that "critic"(I use the term loosely) really liked Sex and the City and You Don't Mess With the Zohan. Just saying.

Maybe, but if you get one considerably negative review out of a pile of positive ones, chances are that negative review was written out of spite and to simply, well, be a jerk.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel: The Dark Knight (Merged)

It's also perfectly acceptable to refer to critics in general as "jerks," so the review itself needn't enter into it.

Umm.. it was a joke? No harm meant. Is this board becoming extra sensitive?

From the tone of it, it doesn't really sound like it.

Well, here's one for you: Morgan Freeman's character dies in the hospital explosion.

Actually, I'm pulling your leg. I don't see the movie until tomorrow afternoon.

So what's the difference between the IMAX and regular version? How much longer is the IMAX one? Will the IMAX footage fill up the entire screen?

The Imax version and regular version are the same length. The regular version will just crop the 20 minutes of Imax footage. And yes the Imax scenes will fill the entire screen.

TonyD,
Actually that scene you spoilerized goes way back to the second trailer.

I took friday off. Getting 2 tickets. Gonna see it, get something to eat and then go back and see it again.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel: The Dark Knight (Merged)

So this is the week. I've skimmed a bit here and there. But after 3 years, here we are.

I bring this up only because I recall a one to two week period where the fans of BB weren't so sure we would get a sequel. BB opened very softly, and was initially perceived as a disappointment in the entertainment media. But it soldiered on, and did decent theatrical business and exceptional home media business.

I am aware that part of the current furor has to do with Heath Ledger. That's the modern media But I think it's not just Heath, but also the film itself (and the character of the Joker) that has folks pretty amped. I won't be checking this thread until Friday, but to say I am excited would be an understatement. It'll be my first midnight movie of the year (I used to do that more).

See ya'll on Friday morning

I am puzzled by the Godfather II comparisons. I don't even see any similarities?

I've said before that I haven't seen the Godfather films so this is only a guess, but maybe it's a comparison of quality 'crime saga' genre films, which includes this film's inspiration, HEAT. From what I know, the Godfather films have large ensemble casts so maybe (like HEAT) it tells all of these personal stories of people all over the city.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel: The Dark Knight (Merged)

I wathced the 6 mins. on the Begins BD last night and had some questions.

What AR is imax?

Why was the AR at the very beg. (with the studio logos) so incredibly wide?

Is this exactly the way the movie starts (up to the montage anyway)?

-IMAX aspect ratio is 1.34:1 (but as you could see on your Blu-Ray disc, the prologue is closer to 1.78:1 as it fills your screen more than a 4x3 image would)

-No idea, maybe for effect? It likely won't be on the regular 2.35:1 version.

-That first 6 minutes of the film, is well, the first 6 minutes of the film. Perhaps refined a bit more in the final film since that was early on in Nolan's editing process.

When the film is released on Blu-Ray, the IMAX aspect ratio WILL be preserved, filling the 16:9 HDTV frame, then switch to 2.35:1 (or whatever it is exactly, 2.39:1 or 2.40:1) for the remainder of the film.

I think the comparisons with GF2 have to do with.....

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
....the transformation Bruce Wayne undergoes in the film
