This will be one of the most HATED movies by internet elitists. Mark my words.

The reviews so far are too good. All the reviews have compared it to movies like The Godfather.

I guarantee that there will be a HUGE backlash after the film releases. Internet elitists won't shut up about how it's the most overrated movie of all time.

Also, Heath Ledger's performance will definitely be polarizing. Many will feel that his acting is way over the top, while others will claim that it's oscar worthy.

Well, from the places that one would expect internet elitism (namely CHUD), the response so far has been one of "it's a great movie - maybe not the second coming, but it would've been even better if they had cut about 15 minutes."

Who really gives a s**t what "internet elitists" think anyway? They're far from elite and most of them need a good smack upside the head in an attempt to knock some sense into their narrow little minds.

There's always going to be people who hate the movie just because it is popular. However, I think there's also going to be people whose expectations are SO incredibly high that they won't be able to help but be dissapointed by the fact that it's just a movie and not a religious experience.

That being said, I'm really only talking about people on the extreme ends on the spectrum.

Dark Knight Opening in Record 94 IMAX Theaters - Superhero Hype!

Quote:
The Dark Knight Makes Motion Picture History in Imax(R) Theatres on July 18th
Thursday July 10, 7:30 am ET
Director's Groundbreaking Use of IMAX(R) Cameras Generates Anticipation Around the Globe
Excitement Surrounding Film and Early Reviews Drives Record-Setting Advance IMAX Ticket Sales
Worldwide Premiere to be Held at AMC Loews Lincoln Square 13 with IMAX on July 14th

LOS ANGELES, July 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ - IMAX Corporation and Warner Bros. Pictures today announced that the studio's highly anticipated and technologically unprecedented summer movie, The Dark Knight, starring Christian Bale and Heath Ledger, and directed by Christopher Nolan, will open in a record 94 IMAX® theatres domestically on July 18th in conjunction with the film's wide release. The film will also open in 15 IMAX theatres day-and-date internationally, with at least 23 additional international locations opening in the coming weeks.

The Dark Knight: The IMAX Experience features six sequences filmed with IMAX® cameras, the first time ever that a major feature film has been even partially shot using IMAX cameras, marking a revolutionary integration of the two film formats. The worldwide premiere of the film will be held at the AMC Loews Lincoln Square 13 with IMAX in New York on July 14th, the first time a Hollywood feature film has premiered in an IMAX theatre.

Advance IMAX ticket sales demonstrate the huge enthusiasm surrounding the
movie:

- Advance IMAX ticket sales have already surpassed $2 million, more than a week prior to opening
- Over 100 shows are already sold out
- 93 domestic IMAX theatres have added midnight screenings
- Many IMAX theatres in the USA are adding 3am shows, and some are screening non-stop for 24 hours to meet the high moviegoer demands
- Chicago's Navy Pier and the Palisades Center (West Nyack, NY) IMAX theatres will run shows non-stop for 72 hours

"The combination of Chris' inimitable vision and IMAX's groundbreaking technology produced a version of 'The Dark Knight' that will blow audiences away in theaters all over the world," said Dan Fellman, President, Domestic Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

Sequences shot in traditional 35mm have been digitally re-mastered into The IMAX Experience® with proprietary IMAX DMR® technology. The two formats will be seamlessly integrated and morph between IMAX and IMAX DMR. In other words, scenes shot in 35mm will appear in IMAX DMR (letterbox), while scenes shot with IMAX's cameras on 15/70mm film will expand vertically to fill the entire IMAX screen, which can be up to eight stories tall, for an all-encompassing IMAX Experience.

"Chris Nolan's enthusiasm for IMAX technology has taken Hollywood filmmaking to a new level, and we're thrilled with the results on the screen and by the positive reactions to advance screenings," said Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. "Warner Bros. Pictures, together with Chris Nolan and the entire filmmaking team, have created an unprecedented filmmaking event that can't be missed, and we are honored to be a part of the excitement."

With the help of Lieutenant Jim Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent, Batman sets out to destroy organized crime in Gotham for good. The triumvirate proves to be effective, but they soon find themselves prey to a rising criminal mastermind known as the Joker, who thrusts Gotham into anarchy and forces the Dark Knight ever closer to crossing the fine line between hero and vigilante.

Christian Bale reprises his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman; Academy Award nominee Heath Ledger ("Brokeback Mountain") stars as arch-villain The Joker, and Aaron Eckhart plays District Attorney Harvey Dent. Maggie Gyllenhaal joins the cast in the role of Rachel Dawes. Returning from "Batman Begins" are Gary Oldman as Lieutenant Jim Gordon; Oscar winner Michael Caine ("The Cider House Rules") as Alfred; and Oscar winner Morgan Freeman ("Million Dollar Baby") as Lucius Fox.

The Dark Knight: The IMAX Experience is scheduled to play day-and-date at the following IMAX® Theatres beginning July 18th:

Re: Batman Begins' sequel: The Dark Knight (Merged)

"I just wanted to be able to work on this stuff at home, because one of the problems with big films is that any time you have studio involvement and millions of dollars of other people's money, the machine is very big," he says. "What happens is, once you start the ball rolling many, many people get hired very, very quickly, and the time for pure creativity, when you're not worrying at all about the practicalities of how these things are going to come on to the screen, disappears too quickly.

"So we decided to take a few months with really nothing going on - and this is the third film we've done it on - to design the key elements of the film on our own without everybody looking over our shoulders. It's really a very pure, creative period, and a lot of the defining elements get pinned down in that time."

Re: Batman Begins' sequel: The Dark Knight (Merged)

Two BIG thumbs up from the "Ebert & Roeper" show...

Richard Roeper:
"Christopher Nolan's Gotham City Epic is one of the best movies of the year, and SHOULD MERIT consideration for a Best Picture Nomination. This is a rich, complex, visually thrilling peice of pop entertainment. As strong as any Super Hero Epic I've EVER seen."

"It'll be an upset if Ledger, ISN'T, nominated for best supporting actor... And it won't be a sympothy vote Either... He creates a Joker that is one of the most memorable screen characters of the decade."

"Writer/Director Nolan has fashioned a near Masterpiece here. Maybe the best Superhero movie ever made... Even with the lead in a Bat-Suit, 'The Dark Knight' has the authentic feel of a crime Epic like 'Heat' or 'The Departed'. It's a Great Film, I say see it. In fact, SEE IT TWICE"

Michael Phillips:
"I would see it twice, and I'm looking forward to it. This film really is one of the great achievements of the year"

"And the wonderful thing about this screenplay, and the way Christopher Nolan has directed this picture, is you don't over exploit a terrific villian. He's in the film just the right amount. And all the scenes really land. And they're kinda creepily funny. And alot of it is really truly menacing. And the balance is perfect.

And it's so hard to get the kinda creepy/funny balance right in a comic book picture. Look at Jack Nicholson in Tim Burton's 'Batman'. Which to me was over exploit... Ya know, ya know, fun..."

Roeper:
"He was a Clown... It was a clown performance."

Phillips:
"But it's NOTHING compared to what Ledger's into."

Roeper:
"And you're right also about this being really an ensemble peice. Even Christain Bale, he has about the same amount of screen time as Batman/Bruce Wayne as Aaron Echart does as Harvey Dent. Each character, Gary Oldman gets his moment. Everyone has their moment"

Phillips:
"And not flashy too... Ya know. There's one extremely flashy performance, and it's the right one. Everybody esle seems very invested. Even people very familiar to ALL of us. Ya know Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, they're actually, all the work is just a little better. A little more, Ya know, a little more perfect."

Roeper:
"But that's it. As I mentioned, that's why it reminded me of movies like 'Heat' or 'The Departed'. Obviously we're dealing in Super Hero Genre here, BUT played authentically by everybody else. This is the world they live in, Gotham City..."

Roeper:
"You know you mentioned the running time of 2 and a half hours. I'm telling you it's the fastest 2 and a half hours I've spent at the movies in years. There's never a moment where I was going 'Aw jeez. They coulda cut 15 minutes out of this film'. It zips right along."

Re: Batman Begins' sequel: The Dark Knight (Merged)

Terry, I'm curious about something.
Early on, you were saying this was going to be epic, before any of the trailers even showed up iirc- and when they did, I honestly couldn't see any indication of epic scope. On the contrary, that big money shot of the semi flipping is done on what looks like a deserted street. If anything, the shots I was seeing looked fairly small scale. Now that the reviews are coming in, epic is a word getting tossed around quite a bit.
My question is-what clued you in about this aspect- a friend in the production? a look at the script?
just curious as they seemed to do a good job of keeping the lid on this tight.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel: The Dark Knight (Merged)

Given how much coin BB earned for WB from the box office, merchandise and DVD sales, the writing was on the wall that TDK would be a massive undertaking, especially with the studio giving Nolan and co. $200 million to make the movie, which was $50 million more than BB's production budget. Nolan surprised many execs by bringing the production in on schedule and under budget (the final price tag minus marketing is $180 million).

The few people I knew who would know anything at all about the production all kept their mouths shut for the most part, only revealing that that movie was going to be gigantic in terms of its scale. The most interesting thing I was told was that Chris Nolan was "swinging for the fences" with TDK. From the many reviews I've read, it looks like that was indeed the case.

Re: Batman Begins' sequel: The Dark Knight (Merged)

Richard Corliss compared the film to Cronenberg's "The Fly"....

Quote:
In its rethinking and transcending of a schlock source, The Dark Knight is up there with David Cronenberg's 1986 version of The Fly. It turns pulp into dark poetry. Just as that movie found metaphors of cancer, AIDS and death in the story of a man devolving into an insect, so this one plumbs the nature of identity.

Yeah, I hate that too. Whenever you read that kind of comment, you know that those people haven't picked up a comic since they were 12, they think that superhero books are the only comics made and that those superhero comics are all like the 1960's Batman TV series.

Haha.. I guess some people think that filming their HD TV constitutes it as an HD clip. I appreciate the effort, I just wish people would learn how to transfer a clip.. not transfer a camcorder recording of their tv of the clip.

If only I had HBO, we wouldn't be in this mess...wouldn't be true HD (DVD quality instead), but it wouldn't be camera-shot either.
