One of the kings of unintentional comedy

1. The Karate Kid - A (Your the best around, and nothin's ever gonna keep ya down. A literally ass-kicking sports movie montage)
2. Rocky - A-

3. Save the Tiger - B+
4. The Karate Kid III - B+ (Bill Simmons' priceless observation about this film's billionaire villain says it all about why this is one of the best unintentionally hilarious movies around: "My stocks are looking pretty good this week, I think I'll go browbeat a teenage karate champion")
5. Rocky V - B (Another film that would be higher on the comedy charts if it wasn't for its off-the-charts successor, Rocky IV)
6. The Karate Kid II - B- (Plenty of comedy moments, especially the hilarious finale, but the homoerotic undertones of the Daniel-san/Mr. Miyagi relationship are downright creepy here.)
7. Lean on Me - B- (Morgan Freeman may hold the world record for most mediocre movies made watchable by his presence)

Re: THE OVERLOOKED & OBSCURE DIRECTORS SERIES - Volume XIX – The Films of JOHN G AVILDSEN

In order of merit:

1.Rocky (1976) ***1/2
2.Joe (1970) ***
3.The Karate Kid (1984) ***
4.Save the Tiger (1973) **1/2
5.The Formula (1980) **
6.The Karate Kid, Part II (1986) **
7.Rocky V (1990) **
8.The Karate Kid, Part III (1989) *1/2

I don't think there has ever been another director whose post-Oscar victory movies have been (in most cases) as insignificant; the fact that he shouldn't really have gotten the Oscar in the first place - in spite of the film itself being both a classic and a box office champ - is quite telling, I suppose...
