Matt,

Thanks for the info on the BW (cut issue) questions. Have you had a chance to view the other BW S1 eps from the R2 set?

Any new info on R1 releases? I haven't heard anything so far.
a domestic retailer has these for sale (xploitedcinema).
i've used him before and he runs a good operation. i'll most likely order them this week.
i would be perfectly willing to hold out for the R1s if it still felt like a release were imminent, but that just doesn't seem to be the case anymore.
not if they are still unclear about the rights and no longer have any compelling tie-in upcoming.

Paul,

Does this outlet provide the un-cut originally-aired versions? Also, what's the video quality?

Jeff,
I think Paul means xploitedcinema carries the imported, official R2 versions--the same ones I ordered from amazon.co.uk.
yes, Matt is correct- they are the same R2 UK sets.

after getting some loose and scratched discs before from direct-from-UK orders, its much less of a p.i.t.a to just order non R1 titles from a guy stateside. it usually ends up being only a few bucks more than ordering direct, but that way if i have any issues, i don't have to ship them back by transatlantic post to get them recitified.

having gotten several loose, scratched discs and broken cases, i've become really gunshy about overseas purchases (the exception being R4 titles from Au...never had a problem there and prices- shipping inc.- are more reasonable than with UK and French material)

from xploited, the BW set is just under $50 and the SM$M set is just under $60.

Season one of both Six Million Dollar Man and Bionic Woman are due out in Australia on 30th November.

No idea what the hold-up is re. a US release.

Matt, Paul,

Thanks a bunch for the info. I'm about 99% ready to go ahead and get the R2's even though I'll have to get a PAL/NTSC Converter Box in order to view them since I have a Sony DVD Player that will output PAL's but doesn't have the built-in Converter necessary to view on an NTSC TV. The only problem is that it's a little tough to locate a PAL/NTSC Standalone Converter Box that has "Component" output jacks on it.

Anyway, for the "quote of the decade"

You said it, Ben. There are a few thousand of us here that wonder the same thing.

"Patience is a virtue". Then, we "Bionic" TV/DVD" fans must be among the most virtuous on the planet

Any further updates, Matt, on the BW S1 R2 sets (any "cut eps" detected, etc)? Have you had the chance to go through the entire BW S1 set yet?
Why not just buy a region free player with a built in PAL/NTSC converter? You can get good ones for under $75.

Yes, and they're a lot less expensive than a decent stand-alone converter box (a Comworld or Tenlab one runs from $270-plus).

I'd only recommend buying a stand-alone converter if you also plan to use it to watch PAL videotapes, not just DVDs. This would mean that you'd have to have a PAL VCR, too.

The built-in converters in the Philips machines, for example, are very good indeed, especially when you consider that +/- $70 price point. They come close to (but don't surpass) the quality of a Tenlab/Comworld converter, but they're miles better than the converters built into the multi-system VCRs of a few years back, like the $600 Samsung one.

Steve, Andy,

Thanks for the info. I've considered getting the Phillips DVD Player but wanted to stay with Sony on my equip for standardization purposes. Sony doesn't sell their DVD players with built-in Converters, for some reason. I'll most likely get that Phillips model and use it for R2 DVD viewing. The way the R1 "Bionic" picture's looking is that I might have to do that However, I still get a positive response from Bill Hunt (site Mgr, "The Digital Bits" 'net site) when asking about the R1 releases. Bill is certain that they're coming in '06, most likely by the summer at the latest. So, "time will tell".

Does anyone that has the R2 release of BW Season 1 notice an intermittent audio dropoff problem in this set? I've noticed a couple of places where the audio level drops off considerably but the duration of the dropoff is small. One place that I noticed it was in the episode "The Deadly Missiles", in the scene where "Oscar" is explaining the mission to "Jaime" in her kitchen and she puts a pie in the oven.

The good news about this set is that the video/transfer quality is very good.

Still nothing that I've heard out there in the rumor mill about any upcoming R1 releases for either of these series.

Or better yet, search the internet where you will find the codes to unlock just about any region code. All DVD players are the same. The manufacturers are the ones that put in codes that only allow them to play one region. Those codes can be reversed by a simple process.

It's not looking good... Universal just announced some TV titles for March and guess what's missing......

If they're going to make 1st quarter (like somebody rumored) they better hurry.

He said he had a Sony, though, and Sonys are notoriously tough to crack.
it doesn't matter as he needs something to convert the PAL signal to NTSC.

and Jeff said that Bill (Hunt) seems to believe that they will make it out by the end of Q2 so its possible that we should know one way or the other by May.

there was also a very strong rumour that a remastered Flash Gordon was coming (25 th Ann) and we never got that- although i have no doubt it will get here eventually.

i'm holding off a little while longer on the PAL set but if i don't hear anything by the end of May, i will almost certainly be ordering it then.
hopefully they'll still have them by then.

Ok, a couple of questions for you all -

1) Any word on seasons 2 of either show? I've been looking, but not found anything yet.

2) Realizing that it'll take forever to watch the Bionic Woman "correctly" (IE after season 3 of the 6m$m), I started in just a couple nights ago. I'm noticing that the show is very, how shall we say - domestic. Here's Steve, out globetrotting fighting super-spys and ninja and evil robot bigfoots from outer space. On the other hand, here's Jamie, who gets to deal with escaped lions, native american children who lie, and other less than earth shattering events. Does she ever get around to fighting her own evil robot bigfeet too?

That's because BW is supposed to be a different show than $6M Man, not just a female version of its older brother.

This was Lindsay Wagner's concern when they offered her the show. She only agreed to do it when she was assured that her show wouldn't just be a carbon copy of Lee Majors' show, but that it would be more "human interest" than action-oriented.

If you've ever seen an episode guide, or watched this show on a regular basis as a kid, you should already know the answer to this one!

Yes, there are more action-oriented episodes as the show progresses (can anyone say Fembots?), but not as much as $6M Man.

I go along with Andy's post. Yep, there are some "action" eps later in the series. I might be in the minority, but I actually liked the early S1 "domestic" eps better than the later ones. I liked most of S2, but I wasn't fond of S3. S1, I'm about So, my favorite season (R2) has been released. That'll tide me over until S2 comes out. I figure that it'll make it at least to R2 release. Of course, we're all hoping for those S1 announcements.

fyi, I received this reply recently from Kenneth Johnson (TV series creater of 6M$M, BW) ;

[start of reply]

Dear Jeff...

Thanks very much for taking time off from the Longhorns to send your kind words about The Bionic Woman and my work.

As far as I know, Universal has no plans at this time to release (R1) the entire Bionic Series on DVD. I've also heard that they have a rights problem. I have indeed volunteered my services to do a commentary if they ever go forward.

Check my website for further developments.

Thanks again for taking the time to write. It's wonderful to hear that Bionic Woman captured your imagination.

Best...

Kenny

[end of reply]

So, "the wait goes on" for those R1 releases.

(Kenny's "Longhorn" comment was his "comeback" to what I had sent him about the Texas 'Horns winning the college football championship in the Rose Bowl

Actually, I only barely remember the show from way back as a kid - pretty much everything I remember was from 6M$M and very little from BW.

And the more domestic episodes dont bug me, but they more threw me for a loop while I was expecting ninja and fembots.
The first season of "The Bionic Woman" was indeed domestic but I think that it added to the series' charm.

It was nice to get to know Jaime before she was thrust into the more action-oriented storylines of the 2nd season of the show.It also gave Lindsay Wagner a chance to add quite a bit of dimension to the character. She has oft been quoted as saying"...I'm trying like hell not to let the character turn into Wonder Woman". She succeeded.

I was a bionic junkie back in the 1970's and can remember very clearly anticipating the premiere of "The Bionic Woman" on my "golden" birthday back in 1976. I followed the show thru it's 3 year run on television and never missed an episode.

The show peaked in it's second season and IMHO this season had the best blend of action/adventure stories while still maintaining the humanity aspect of the 1st season.

It was painful to watch what NBC did to the show when it switched to that network for the 3rd season. I just couldn't handle the aliens and really far out directions that they were trying to push the series into.

It's a shame that we aren't going to see an immediate release of either of these series in the Region 1 format due to "corporate greed" over the rights to the property involved.

A new generation of could-be "Bionic" fans are going to be deprived of 2 bionic tv series that are part of our cultural tv heritage.

Well, still no word for R1's of either series, but here's something that's a little off-topic, I suppose. Here's the links for anyone that hasn't heard about the planned "Bionicon" convention being held in Tampa, Fla on June 23-25. Lindsay Wagner, Richard Anderson, and Martin E. Brooks will be the guest celebs so far. They are in negotiations for another member of the series at present.

This is the link for the convention sponser:

Here's the link for the convention with news updates, etc.

Over at the Digital Bits Forum, Bill Hunt (Digital Bits Mgr) posted this regarding the R1 bionic series:

"Those are still in development hell over at Universal, unfortunately. They've been "working" on them for months now. Maybe we'll see them this year. If I hear anything about it, I'll post."

Oh well....maybe someday for the R1's....

Drat - and here I thought you had something good to say about S2 in the UK. At this point, I'd take either release m'self.

A member posted this on the Yahoo BionicFans forum. Nothing official but it's cool to read regardless We'll hope it's accurate info. At least the timeline's believable. I'd guess that if these 2 series are coming to Region 1 this year, December's about right, at least sometime after Jul-Aug.

[post copy]

Hi everyone,I don't know that this is indeed fact, but a friend of mine works for Blockbuster Video and said that he saw something in a company mailing saying that The Bionic Woman and Six Million Dollar Man would be released around Christmas 2006. He said he he didn't really pay much attention to it because he's never seen these shows!?
Hopefully, this could be true, but I haven't heard anything "official" myself.

Jeff, could be true. Most of the major retailers (Best Buy, Wal-mart, Target, Blockbuster, etc.) receive advance word on release dates way before the rest of the industry. These retailers are planning for the Christmas season long in advance, and require much pre-release info from the studios to plan their marketing and coordinate purchasing decisions.

This info is supposed to be confidential, which isn't really fair, since few others receive the info at this early stage. I once saw a Wal-mart fourth-quarter planner (from a neighbor) for their video department, around this time of year. There were titles listed, with streetdates and prices, for movies that hadn't even hit the theaters yet!

With as many false starts as the bionic shows have had on DVD, I'll believe it when they're actually in my hands.

I would love to have this on dvd at some point

I redesigned a few of the covers I had posted before, so when correcting those links, I decided to post the "new and improved" cover links here:

SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN and BIONIC WOMAN: Season 1
SMDM: Seasons 2 & 3
BW: Seasons 2 & 3

OK Universal, I give up! You can use my cover designs! Think of all the time I saved you (unless you were planning on reusing the crappy R2 designs.)

And remember:

Nothing really new to report, but Kenneth Johnson posted the following on his website today:
Quote:
DVD's of the series will not be released until rights issues have been resolved between Universal and another company. There is no estimate as to when that might happen.
He's no doubt receiving many emails on the matter. Kenny is still in negotiations to attend the Bionicon convention in Tampa this June. The entire cast of BW is signed to attend, so it'd be "icing on the cake" to have their "creator" also attend.

It would be really cool if Universal finally got their s**t together and was able to make the "official" DVD announcement at the convention.

Great cover designs, Matt! Thanks for the KJ update. So far, nothing more in R2 yet either. Makes me wonder why S2 hasn't been released yet in R2.

GOOD NEWS! I was making the round of upcoming releases in R2, and I saw that Sendit has both the 6M$M and Bionic Woman listed for release on October 23rd. Ok, so it took a year for the next series to get here, but it finaly did!

I'm less excited about Woman than I am 6M$M. Season 1 really didnt do as much for me as I thought. Meanwile, I loves me that Steve Austin action. Meh - I'll wind up getting both. Who am I kidding.

Re: 6M$M and Bionic Woman Region 2 release 09/26/05?

Yes, there have been rumours that Universal Playback were finally going to get round to the next series of SMDM and BW for a while - they appeared in a few stores pre-order a while back.

However, it now seems certain, as my last issue of Doctor Who Monthly has a big advert from Universal Playback (mostly featuring the first season of The Incredible Hulk), on which the first seasons are shown with banners saying "Series Two Coming Soon"
