Most players will play PAL discs - however, I don't know which ones do a PAL/NTSC conversion.
One solution to this is to use the RGB output, many players will output pure RGB and many TV's have RGB capable inputs.
Also, many TV's these days are also multi-standard, even if they don't advertise the fact much. They will cope with just about anything you play into them - NTSC, PAL...etc.
It's all because it's easier to build a single worldwide design which will work almost anywhere it's sold rather than building country specific models.
It's also driven in part by region-2, which includes both Europe (which has a lot of PAL in it) and Japan (which uses NTSC).
It's been common for European equipment to be multi-standard for some years. The US has lagged behind a little, mostly because it's such a large market with a single national standard, so standards were never really an issue.
Sony players are hard to make multi-region. It's probably easier and maybe cheaper to pick up a low-end player - they are often easily unlocked with codes. And then try it with your TV.
I've been using r1 NTSC discs for seven or eight years and never had any issues, on several different players and TV's.
Of course, another solution is to render your computer-based DVD drive region-free, and play discs in that, in which case TV standards don't come into it (unless you output to a TV!).
