Coming from an impoverished region of Spain, Almodovar began making short films with no formal training. These made him a popular counterculture figure in Franco's Spain and by the early 80's, he was able to make features. His zany comedies proved popular around the world and he has continued to develop as a filmmaker; creating dense, multi-layered dramas with a much higher degree of visual skill than his earlier work displayed. These films have made him the most internationally acclaimed Spanish filmmaker since Bunuel and one of my favorite working directors.

3. Live Flesh - A- (with a breathtaking ending providing a simple visual metaphor for the end of Franco's regime)
4. Bad Education - A- (have to see this again, I was tired and couldn't quite take it all in at the theater)

8. Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown - B

I also have ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER (1999) and TALK TO HER (2002) on VHS which, given that they are arguably his most acclaimed movies, probably indicates that I find him overrated as a film-maker and too one-sided as an artist (what with all the recurring inferences to the gay subculture).
