Jaws and Scuba Tanks

We all know how the film Jaws ends. Chief Brody shoves a scuba tank into the sharks mouth and on its next pass, Brody shoots the tank, the tank explodes and destroys the shark.

Would a bullet piercing a filled scuba tank actually cause the tank to explode as displayed in the film? Might this be a job for Mythbusters?

In the documentary on the DVD, Peter Benchley says not a chance. He even tried to talk Spielberg out of it. Spielberg acknowledged it was ridiculous but insisted that the movie needed that kind of "big" ending.

And do we really have to worry about spoilers for 30-year-old movies?

It's actually going to be on Mythbusters. I saw an ad last night - apparently they're doing a whole Shark Week Mythbusters special.

For those interested, the Mythbusters episode, Jaws Special, will be on Sunday, July 17 at 8:00 PM CST and repeated at 11:00 PM. It's a 2 hour show.
