Did it seem like to anyone that there were some scenes that were perhaps shortened or deleted?

This remains my (only) criticism of the film after second viewing. The film seems to be, at times, pretty choppy. Whether this is because of macro editing choices or because of too many open plotthreads, I'm not sure. But Nolan, at times, gives the audience just barely enough information to get by on from scene to scene.

That's a small criticism in an otherwise near-perfect film. And, I might add, the only reason why BATMAN BEGINS isn't tied for my favorite movie of 2005.

The opening's a bit choppy, but that feeling passes quickly. I saw it for my third time the other night, and it held my attention from beginning to end.

Saw this for the first time on DVD recently. It took me a few viewing to get but now I can't stop thinking about it and the potential sequels. I loved the tone of the film. Very very good movie!

from the dvd review thread to here.

keaton/batman killed one of the henchmen in the first burton when he grabbed a guy by the head with his legs and threw him down the stairwell under the bell.

he must have died, no?
Keaton/Batman killed all sorts of people, mostly in Returns
post #606 of 712
Remember that Keaton's Batman blew up Axis Chemicals with all those henchmen inside the place.

Well, to get technical, Batman probably killed some cops in "Batman Begins" during the Tumbler scene... or very badly hurt them.

"You're lucky no one was killed." He was trying to get Rachel back to the Batcave, and any deaths were collateral damage.

There are some films that I have purchased over the past 6 months or so that I have watched but didn't really crank it to real levels due to not having a subwoofer.

I've corrected that. :b

Put in Batman Begins last night. Wow. The reason I'm putting this in this thread is I think it's better served here. I'll explain...

BB to me, while a great film, and one of the best for 2005, showed restraint, confidence, and had rare grittiness for a film like this. The audio mix shares that approach. Alot of times, action type films are so loud, bright, and have wiz bang sound effects to "deepen" the experience. BB uses it's story and emotional involvement to convey that. The audio mix is JUST the companion along for the ride.

The bass is low...and loud but not intrusive. Dialogue is rich and textured. The sound effects in this mix almost take on a warm sound which is great for HTheater. Nothing worse than a shrilling sound mix that hurts your ears.

I'm rambling too long but this film is a great one and I just thought the sound and image too are top notch. Not sure who is credited for this but they did a marvelous job.

One of the years best.

Yep that's why it'll be the first title I purchase on HD-DVD March 28th
post #611 of 712
Yeah, the LFE is simply awesome in this one. Especially during the chase scene. And I don't even have a great subwoofer. Tim, between this and the ROTS thread, you're going to have me buying an SVS sub in no time.

:b

Brett, I'm sure any good sub with decent extension and power will handle those bass moments in BB and ROTS but the SVS line does combine low end extension and power.

Get one now!

The other thing I failed to mention was the score. Good stuff there too. A bit repetitive but still very effective.

Can't wait for the sequel. Can't wait to get Batman Begins in High Definition in the home.

Just watched this again the other day, and love it. Can't wait to get a HD version myself, but I'm trying to hold off on HD-DVD and wait for the Blu-Ray players to come out.

It's is indeed going to be very interesting to see what WHV drops on March 28 . . .

Not to journey off too far here, but do any of you know where I can find the 2-disc version of BB that still has the casing and collectors edition comic inside? I haven't found it in any stores, all the 2-discs have no cover.

I'm about to have to do the internet thing. Anyone knowing of a store still carrying it, please help a fellow member out by private message or a reply.

Thanks,

JC

Costco was carrying them for a long time. I'm not sure if they still have the title on the shelves. But if you are a member of a Costco. You might want to check it out.

You're probably SOL, Josh.

That issue was discussed quite a bit here.

i saw one today at hollywood video for 14.99 (yes the 2 disc with the comic)
Yeah--Hwood Vid. Places like that, where basically only a minority of consumers buy sell through, might still have random, straggling copies. Finding one in a store near you will be the issue.

Weird. A double post 17 hours later? How does that happen?

By hitting the BACK-button.

I deleted it.

Out of the dark...

One of the things that keeps reminding me that this film is the gold standard for the genre is the structure that maintains the future of the character, the essence of the myth, all while delivering a solid drama. Listening to the soundtrack, and thinking about the story, what the director & writer managed to do was tie Bruce, the Batman, Gotham, the Waynes, and crime all into a very workable, believable structure.

The decision to become Batman doesn't occur as a little boy. It occurs over years of frustration, anger, and maturation. Batman does not exist to take revenge on criminals, but to protect the innocent. And Batman and Gotham are intertwined forever. Something we never discussed earlier in the thread is how perfectly the film ties Bruce and Batman into Gotham. Ultimately, Thomas and Martha Wayne believed in Gotham, believed in the good of human nature, even as they died. Through Alfred, this is passed to Bruce, who feels responsible for Gotham, much as his parents did. Over and over, the film reminded Bruce that his father was a good man, that his father believed in Gotham. It's more than just loving his parents, though that is the primarily catalyst. It's believing in his parents.

This connection between the character and his city is as important as any relationship in the film. A major kudos to the film for establishing it elegantly.
Wow Chuck, you really liked that movie didn't you?
even though i see its flaws easily, the film has such a drive and unflinching sense of conviction that it engrosses me everytime i start to watch it.
Personally, there are other comic book films i would rate higher (just a couple), but i don't think there is any comic book character on film that has been better realized than Bruce Wayne. and yeah, the city has a more dominant relationship to the main character than the female lead does. and its an intelligent, and an emotionally well established relationship to boot.

this material is so rich, it makes it thrilling to trip on where they can go now with it.
I'm very much shoulder-to-shoulder with Chuck on BB. Since purchasing it, I've watched it at least 10 times, which is not something I ever do anymore. The film just continues to grow and prove its quality over repeated viewings.

I don't think it's perfect, but I think this and Spidey-2 are THE best filmed versions of a comic story and hero.

BB is the kind of film that I may pop in, thinking I'll just chapter skip around, watching my favorite scenes....but I end up watching the whole thing anyway, because it hooks me each and every time.

WB just did things right this time: a director who put character and story first, actors instead of stars (except for Katie Holmes), and a plot that unfolds from the characters.

I just hope the sequel continues the emphasis on Bruce Wayne and Batman, and doesn't spend huge amounts of screen time on the villain or his/her origin.

Never thought of that angle, but it works. It's even a great reason to continue to focus on Wayne/Batman; any villain would be viewed as a menace, an invader, and would remain strange, dangerous and unknown until pieces can be put together for clues and knowledge.

This is a bit off-topic but Frank Miller is doing a Batman graphic novel where he faces off against a real life foe:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20060214...s_060214163702

Not sure about this.Miller calls it propoganda himself. Why bother?
One can only hope that it'll be better than Dark Knight Returns 2.

Corey, I love good films, and Batman Begins is a great film. I also readily admit that Batman is my favorite fictional character, and seeing him on the big screen with such clarity and understanding made me love the movie itself. The creators liked Batman for the same reasons I did...his motivation and dedication more than his gadgets and faux pathos. Batman is rarely done in any medium with such consideration and understanding. Or such skill.

Lou, believe it or not, he's been working on this project for quite a while (I think I've know about it for a year or so), but it just hit the "major" news outlets. It'll get even more attention if it's ever released. Like Don, after DKSA and the two miserable issues of All-Star Batman I read (written by Miller), I have feeble expectations. Miller seems to have become a parody of himself lately, and his last good Batman story is 20 years old.
Did not know that Chuck. Too bad, I had hoped this type of activity would remain a footnote in history.
