Night Stalker ongoing thread (now cancelled) - Page 3

To me, the stories so far seem so familiar, but since it is October, I'm still keeping it on the schedule.
This show is not grabbing me. I'll keep watching though...for now.
Well, apparently it is grabbing you somewhere

At about this time in the season I start looking at how motivated I am to watch the shows that I have recorded. I've been skipping over Night Stalker and Threshold to watch other things. This will ultimately lead to my removing them from the list.

So, in the end, did

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
the demon jump into the cop's son, and the demon-possessed cop's son killed Justin? That's what I got out of Kolchak's statement about the body being left where his son could find it. Makes sense--I don't think you can kill a demon by killing the host.

I'm some what dissappointed with this show. Its more Mulder & Sully than Kolchak. I like the solo Kolchak & narration of the old show. They should have called the show Night StalkerS.

I thought the use of surrounds in this episode was pretty dang good. Some creepy moments with the whispering stuff swooshing around the back of the room.
I thought it was a pretty good episode.

Best episode since the pilot.
I've been taping them but I'm way behind, I think I need to watch the last three episodes. I can't wait for the inevitable Darin Morgan episode(s).
Bump for the three or so of us watching this show.

Two-parter, whoo-hoo!
I have them all taped but I've only gotten a chance to watch one episode so far.

For fans of The X-Files, I guess Frank Spotnitz called some old friends because Vince Gilligan is writing an upcoming episode and god among men Darin Morgan (!) is also writing one too.

This show is losing me. I hope to hold on longer. I really wanted to see it succeed but I doesn't seem anything like the old series. Even the Paranormal aspects of the show have been a disappointment.

www.thefutoncritic.com has a story that ABC has cancelled "Night Stalker". Double episodes of Primetime Live will be shown.
While, I understand them canceling the show for poor ratings. This weeks episode was the conclusion of a 2-parter. At least they could do is air the episode. They owe to the 3-4 million fans of the show who continued to watch.

ABC Pulls the Plug on 'Night Stalker'
By Brian Ford Sullivan

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- ABC has axed its struggling freshman drama "Night Stalker" after six airings.

Executive producer Frank Spotnitz broke the news on his production company's blog, Big Light Productions, yesterday:

"It is with regret that I confirm 'Night Stalker' has been canceled. While I’m disappointed the series has come to an end, I am enormously grateful for the experience and the opportunity given me by the network and Touchstone Television. I would like to thank our amazingly talented cast, wonderful crew, killer post-production department, terrific writing staff, producers and partners in crime Daniel Sackheim and John Peter Kousakis, the incredible Jana Fain, and all of you who watched and enjoyed the show. It was a blast."

Scheduling updates released this morning by ABC confirmed the news as the Alphabet will air the first half of an expanded two-hour "Primetime" in the show's Thursday, 9:00/8:00c time period this week.

Previously planned airings of "Finding Nemo" and the original movie "Have No Fear: The Life of Pope John Paul II" will fill the hour on November 24 and December 1. A permanent replacement will likely be announced in the coming weeks.

The cancellation comes on the heels of the show's series-low 3.94 million viewer performance (according to preliminary Nielsen numbers) for its most-recent airing. Overall, "Night Stalker" averaged 5.53 million viewers for its first five airings, making it the network's least-watched series.

It's not clear how many installments of the show's initial 13-episode order were produced.

No fear todd, i bet you will be able to buy all the episodes on DVD...or not.
Well I guess it lost me for good. I'm kinda glad, the show was not very good.
It does suck that they aren't going to at least air this week's.

I thought the show had potential. There were one or two episodes that were actually really good. They probably should have given it a different name, though. This Carl Kolchak had nothing to do with the original. And, it's not like they could justify it by saying they were trying to make it closer to the source material. The original was exactly as Jeff Rice wanted it to be.

At any rate, it looks like we're in the John Doe boat again.

Lets not open that bitter can of worms. Doe was 10 times better and did well in the ratings. And the cliffhanger was the networks decision not the producers.
According to AICN, there were nine episodes produced.
I've been watching, but I don't really care that it was cancelled, either. I'd much rather watch the box set of the original anyway.

I wish ABC would have aired the second half of the two parter, though.

Wow! Didn't even last half as long as the original...

I gave up on this program a while ago, but kept a watch on this thread that I started in hopes that I would read that the show was actually gaining some steam. I feel bad for those of you who did like the program, who will not get to see the second part.

With so few episodes, perhaps they will show up on the Sci- Fi Channel soon...?
Yeah, I too had high hopes for the series, but lost interest after about three mediocre episodes. I'm not that disappointed either.
The real tragedy here is that no Darin Morgan-written eps were produced, at least not as far as I know.
I'm with you there. I almost hope they didn't shoot his episode as opposed to it lingering on a shelf unseen by my eyes.

"Main problem is that the folks who decide to go ahead and recreate Kolchak for 2005 were...ABC, who arguably own the smallest piece of the huge legal mess that is the Kolchak rights. They only own the rights to the two TV movies and what appeared there. Creator Jeff Rice owns the publication rights (books and comics) to anything from any incarnation, and Universal owns the rights to the TV series and anything that appears there. It's hard to "recreate" Darren McGavin's character when you only own a third of him. well, really a fourth since Dan Curtis owns a little bit by having financed the unfilmed third TV movie "Night Killers." But he was involved with the new ABC Kolchak and he didn't really have much, so that probably didn't impact things much. And of course the timeslot placement didn't help. Basically it seemed like ABC was using NS (and their ownership of it) as a tax writeoff more than anything. Still, I would have preferred new Night Stalker to, say, Invasion - there was more plot momentum in last week's "The Source" then in every episode of Invasion to date."http://www.aintitcool.com/tb_display...=21829#1029133
I would love to get more info on this.

In Memorium:

Well, boo hoo. We are gathered here at this wake to pay respects for a show we didn't really like. Poor, poor Night Stalker Jr... The son could not compete with the father.

Actually, the whole thing is too tragic. They stupidly cancelled the original series, which went on to be a big cult favorite. Finally bowing to fan demand, they revive the series, but instead of a crusty but lovable, middle-aged hack journalist, we get a unlovable pretty boy imbecile in the Carl Kolchak role. So, ABC, that's what happens when you try to improve upon a classic and beloved television character, and then try to put him on Thursday when people have better things to watch. So, I hope somebody over there gets fired over this stinkeroo.

Ethan....tell us what you really think.

I love the character as much as anybody but it's not exactly like anyone knows who the character is beyond the show's small cult of fans. Carl Kolchak isn't exactly as recognized as Lucy or Archie Bunker or Fonzie. His hat isn't going to be in the Smithsonian.

And they cancelled the original show for the same reason they cancelled the remake- low ratings.

Well the good news...Scifi channel will air the 3 unaired episodes. The bad news..Not until this summer. www.futoncritic.com has the info:

New York, NY - December 12, 2005 - SCI FI Channel has acquired all ten episodes of Touchstone Television's series remake of 'Night Stalker' it was announced today by Thomas Vitale, SCI FI Channel's Senior Vice President, Programming and Original Movies. In addition to the seven episodes that aired on ABC this fall, SCI FI will have the exclusive premieres of 3 never- before-seen episodes. The series is slated to launch next summer.

Inspired by the original movie and series, Carl Kolchak ('Townsend'), is a crime reporter whose wife was mysteriously killed 19 months earlier. Now, in the eyes of the FBI, Kolchack is the primary suspect. His determination to discover the truth behind his wife's murder leads him to investigate other crimes that seem to have some kind of supernatural component. But he's trying to piece together a puzzle that keeps changing its shape. Who or what is committing these crimes? How are they all related? And why do some victims end up with a strange red mark on their hands in the shape of a snake? With his reluctant partner Perri Reed ('Union'), a sexy if skeptical fellow reporter in tow, Kolchak will go to any lengths to answer these questions.

SCI FI Channel is a television network where "what if" is what's on. SCI FI fuels the imagination of viewers with original series and events, blockbuster movies and classic science fiction and fantasy programming, as well as a dynamic Web site (www.scifi.com) and magazine. Well, that's good news. At least the cliffhanger will see some resolution.
