I just finished watching Season 5 this week. I had taped it and was waiting until I had a chance to re-watch Season 4 before I went into Season 5. All I can say is wow. I think they did a great job with show and pretty good with how they wrapped things up. I'm gonna miss seeing these characters in new situations.
I've been reading thru this thread. It's kinda funny all the predictions and how most of them did not come to pass, especially many of the early season ones.
It mostly seemed to me that Ruth moved George out not so much because that's what she wanted, but because she was influenced to do so by her friends. I think if George had stayed and improved as he had seemed to, (started treating Ruth nicer, etc.), and if Ruth had not had that outside influence, then she would have been happier being with George. When George was treating Ruth much better and Ruth was so cold, I expected George to turn Ruth's own words on her, "it seems that you really don't like me".
I don't know, I didn't have a problem with this. She told Edie outright she really wasn't into girls. And yet she had an attraction for Edie. She finally felt like, "you know what, let me try it and see, maybe I can be into you that way, because I'm too unsure to know for certain." But in the end, it just didn't work for her. I really found Edie's harsh reaction to Claire afterwards to be out of line, because if she really loved Claire, if she really wanted her to be happy, she would have accepted that Claire gave it her best shot, but that wasn't where she could take their relationship, and she'd have still loved her as a very close friend.
A couple things we did miss that bothered me though. I would have liked to see Ruth getting back from her trip and finding out about Nate. All that was skipped over. Also at the end of the dinner table scene, when they all reminisce and the toast Nate, I'd have liked to see Nate & his father standing in the doorway of the room, maybe a small conversation between them at that point.
Actually, I don't agree and I think the point is that George had the necessary emotional detachment to have been able to really see Nate as he was, and was the perfect one to present these sides of Nate.

| The only time I really disliked her choices was when she treated Edie the way she did in season 4. Talk about using someone. |

| George is, apparently, not crazy anymore, as shown by how... insightful he was on this episode, especially at the funeral. If there was one thing that rubbed me the wrong way about the funeral scene it was George making that speech about Nate, acting almost as if he knew Nate his whole life. And also, what he said was just so damn TRUE, such a great observation of Nate's character, and something that the viewer should have understood on their own instead of the writer's TELLING us. George just seemed the wrong character to make that speech, if it even should have been made. |
