Six Feet Under Season 5

Just a quick reminder that the final (how sad does that make you?) season starts next week on Monday instead of Sunday. I can't wait to see how this all wraps up.

According to HBO.com, yes.

HBO is doing something different this summer. In the 9pm Sunday night time slot, they're doing new episodes of Entourage and The Comeback (Lisa Kudrow's new comedy). On Monday at 9pm, they'll have a new episode of Six Feet Under, with rebroadcasts of Entourage and Comeback at 10pm. Then, the following Sunday, they'll rebroadcast 6FU at 10pm after new episodes of Entourage and Comeback.

I suspect this scheduling has something to do with HBO's desire to give the primary slot to shows that may have a future, as opposed to a show that is ending (and that already has a loyal fanbase).

The promo for this season is amazing. www.hbo.com/sixfeetunder has it. I love the season promos for this show, they are a real treat.

Makes sense.

I'm watching Season 3 on DVD now (I became a fan thru the DVD releases) but I finally have HBO so I'm gonna record all of Season 5 so I can watch it as soon as I get done watching Season 4, which is rumored to be coming out this summer. Yay!!!

So far Season 3 is pretty good.
Season Four is officially coming to DVD on August 23 (which I believe is the day after the series finale).
Yes, I couldn't believe it, Season 3 just came out, and now Season 4 follows in just a couple months.

So, How did everyone like it, very intense.

(POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD!)

I see it this way, my predictions for this season:

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Some point in the season Billy WILL freak out and it may not be good!

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
The returning dead wife theme could be something to look into too?

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Carlos and his wife will get back together...

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
The over the edge husband will be tuff for Ruth!

What else? Just a few of my guesses...

The Seagull was most likely symbolism of Lisa I suspect. Especially with Nates look.

I am so sad this show is ending. I love the cast and the writing so much.

Good episode I thought.

Looks like its gonna be an interesting season.

I was wondering if HBO is experimenting with the time slots for their drama series. I know that The Wire didn't do as well last year because of the competition with Desperate Housewives.
Pretty good season premier. I was trying to figure out how much time had elapsed between seasons...I'm figuring about 4-6 months? Brenda alluded to succeeding in getting pregnant on the 4th try (in her conversation with Lisa), and I figure whe was less than 2 months along. Was there a more obvious clue that I missed?

I think Billy is the best character on this show, although something about the Claire/Billy relationship really creeps me out.
Man...I watched last night without having seen ANY shows since the season finale last year.

It is so well acted, so full of character complexities...and, so danged depressing. It's tough to watch these people - they are all so tortured! But, I love watching anyhow.

I won't even try to make any predictions for the season. I'm just going to kick back and revel in it.

I really just hope Nate finds some peace.

I feel it is kinda disrespectful for HBO to move it to Monday nights. Sundays have always been the "cream de la cream" for HBO, moving SFU to Monday's is like Fox trying putting their sitcoms like Bernie Mac out to pasture on Monday night. SFU is so much more an "anchor night" show than Entourage. It's the last season, at least give it some respect during the last year.

Why is it that HBO has continued to negotiate more seasons out of Sopranos after they said it was ending (originally season 5 was gonna be it, HBO begged a season 6, now before 6 even begins they're in negotiations for a season 7), why not Six Feet Under? it hasn't been on all that long, and unlike Sex And The City, it's not like the characters are now in a place where we can say goodbye to them. Come on, you've gotten 2 more seasons out of Sopranos, couldn't you have gotten just one more out of Six Feet?

I suspect the difference has less to do with HBO than with the creators of the two series. Alan Ball has made it pretty clear that he wants to be done with 6FU, whereas David Chase keeps changing his mind about finishing with The Sopranos.

It's not an apt comparison, because Fox doesn't rerun their shows multiple times throughout the week. 6FU is still on Sunday night, just not the newest episode.

does anyone else feel that the opening death sequence was a tad long? It felt like they were really trying to force an idea the writers came up with but it felt to long just for the death.

Ever since I heard about this, I felt it was more that HBO is trying to expand to Monday nights in addition to airing new shows on Sundays too. So I would think it was more of a vote of confidence that 6FU was the show that was leading the way for HBO Mondays

I would too. Have you seen the figure he was offered for just the 5th season?!
Quote:
After HBO made him an offer he couldn't refuse (pegged at somewhere between $15 million to $20 million), Chase agreed to return for a fifth season, with the caveat that it would likely be the last.
I think I would milk that cow for all its worth too. Not to mention the rumored Sopranos movie.

I liked the premier. I expect there to be more excitement now that we've caught up on the things that happened between the seasons.

I actually felt sorry for George and his feeble mindedness. Quite the change from how I felt about him last season. And all it took was one episode.

Glad to see the actress who plays the secretary on the US version of "The Office" get a role in such a good show (as Rico's date; the dental hygienist).

I think Rico will end up getting serious with some woman, and its going to drive his ex crazy, until they get back together.

Glad to see the show tackling surrogate issues within the gay community. Not something Ive seen done in TV before (aside from 20/20 type shows).

And what is up with the mother and her issues with Claire? Shes going nutty.

I still haven't seen ANY of the 2nd season. I have to watch it.

I completely forgot about the Monday time change, therefor, I had to watch it from the bedroom tivo (its my fail-safe) (so no HD, and no 5.1 for me )

I've watched SFU since the First and Best Season. The last Couple of Years I thought it was a pretty Tired show, Hopefully this year will be good but I think it's run it's course. I think when they skipped over Nate's surgery and returned to find him Married to Lisa it really killed they show. They built up this major life effecting point and never allowed us to see the after effects of it.
I've also been a watcher since the beginning. I think last season was a little ho-hum. It seemed like they just threw in "oh, yeah this is what really happened to Lisa" for shock value. Nate just suddenly figures out the whole conspiracy during the final episode. Not that I'm saying the show is bad, I just think season 4 wasn't as good as the previous three.
This season seems to be an improvement though. I really enjoyed the first episode of the final season. I can't wait till next weeks episode.

although something about the Claire/Billy relationship really creeps me out.

I think its because Claire looks so young(even though we know she's "legal" age).

It's been a major issue (though in somewhat different contexts) on both Queer as Folk and The L Word.

I finally got around to watching the season premiere last night, and I was very satisfied with how it's starting off.

It was a depressing start, and I love it that way.
IMO, this show is best when there's a very sad/depressing situation.

Peter Krause has to be the best at crying. When Nate breaks down and cries, it just feels real and makes it more depressing.

I like where they're going with George and Ruth.

Something's gonna happen with Billy, and it won't be pretty I'm sure.

I'm not looking forward to the surrogate thing with Keith and David. This storyline's been done too often in other shows, it feels repetative - even though this situation involves a gay couple. I just don't know what else they can do for these two characters.

Although I hate to see the series end, I'm really looking forward to the last episode. I hope that everything doesn't wrap up on a happy ending - I think it would work best if there was some misery left.

I have a feeling that the final episode will involve(spoilerized just in case) Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
the death of a major character... and it will probably be at the opening scene. I'm guessing it'll be Ruth, just to show the "natural" cycle of life (ie. parents dying before the kids)... although it may feel to "bookendish" since the father of the family (Nate Sr.) died in the opening scene of the series.

Another take:
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

I've always wanted a series to end with ALL of the main characters dying in one fatal incident (especially 'Friends', but that was for different reasons ). I've always wondered why no one's done it before (to my knowledge), but with a show like this (which is about death) it seems fitting. Is it that they always want to leave open the possibility for a return? And it's not like they have to worry about ratings.

Episode 2, "Dancing for Me". I suggest not reading further unless you've seen the episode.

My regard for 6FU dropped steadily throughout season 3 and bottomed out in season 4, but the first two episodes of this season have been very strong. For one thing, the writers are back to actually using the opening death scene in the episode that follows. The device of having Nate handle the funeral of a high school buddy may seem simple and obvious, but they took it in interesting directions. The conversation at the bar between Nate and the third member of the high school "trio" was the kind of thing that 6FU does so well -- insightful, risky, unusual. And I loved the conversation between David and Clair about harvesting her eggs and David's dream about the subject.

The relationship between Ruth and George is very painful. I thought it was important to show a scene like the one with the ice cream, so that you could see the source for Ruth's attitude. Frances Conroy did such a good job in the scene where Ruth appears to crack over dinner that I was genuinely fooled; by now I can usually spot a fantasy sequence instantly, but not this one.

Billy flushing his meds was obvious, and I'm glad they got it out of the way early instead of dangling it for half the season. I just hope it leads to something more interesting than a replay of the crack-up we already saw in the first season.

So far, so good. A excellent start to the season.

Interesting how the first death was 5 minutes or so and then this one was about 30 seconds. What a way to go out.

Nate talking to his dead high school buddy took me by surprise, as I can't remember the last time a character talked to the dead person.

David's fantasy sequence was pretty damn weird.

I feel sorry for Ruth for all she has to put up with.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
I have a feeling that the final episode will be:
Ruth dying.
Nate and David selling the funeral home to Rico.
Nate, Brenda, Maya, and the new child moving to Seattle.
Keith and David moving to San Diego with their adopted/surrogate kid.
George being moved into an institution.
Claire and Billy moving to somewhere else in L.A.

Did anyone else think the apartment complex that Rico's "girlfriend" lived in was the same one that Bruce Willis' character in Pulp Fiction lived in? When Rico was in the courtyard with the lady, it really looked like it. I'm sure there are plenty of apartments that look like that...but who knows?
L.A. has a million look-a-like apartment complexes.

What if Ruth doesnt die, but is killed by Billy due to the way shes been treating Claire? Two birds; One stone. he flips out, she dies. What a fucking ending that would be. The pain of it all drives Claire to be a sucessful artist.
