Yesterday, 12th March 2011, I completed my long-gestating retrospective dedicated to my favorite cinematic auteur, Luis Bunuel, that I embarked on back in October 2010. As it happens, that day also marked the 44th anniversary from the release of my all-time favorite album, The Velvet Underground's THE VELVET UNDERGROUND & NICO...so, in a way, it's a perfectly appropriate date to end my tribute on. Incidentally, I'm listening to the band's awesome double live album from 1969 as I write this
!
Initially, I had intended to spend just a month on covering Bunuel's entire filmography since it would have fitted quite nicely in 31 days and, consequently, I jettisoned my annual plans for a Halloween horror marathon for this very purpose. However, events happening at my workplace over which I had little control meant I had to spend much more time there than I normally would and, before I knew it, the retrospective dragged on into the new year's first, second and third month! I am not complaining, though, because the leisurely pace meant I had time to acquire the one elusive title missing from my collection (THAT IS THE DAWN) and stock up on movies, documentaries and books that had even the remotest connection to Bunuel.
Watching them all back to back for the first time, I realized more than ever why Bunuel will never be replaced from the top spot of the film directors I most admire and also how much he used the same themes and actors from one movie to the next. I had already posted two previous versions of my poll in this thread but the following is the final definitive one:
