There was a time in the early 90's before I knew any better (Bill's taste based on breadth of experience theorem) when Stone was one of my favorite, if not THE favorite director. His films (along with Lynch's Twin Peaks) were the first to make me thing about editing and become more interested in the technical aspects of filmmaking.

I didn't think that you had seen Twin Peaks, Brook.

I've never seen Fire Walk With Me, but I watched the series when it originally aired. At least Season 1 anyway, I missed a lot of season 2. I think S1 aired my junior year of high school when I didn't play any sports. IIRC, Twin Peaks showed on Friday nights. My senior year I played basketball and we had games every Friday night so I ended up missing a bunch of episodes, and then quit watching a lot of the final Bob stuff because I was completely lost. (why I didn't tape the shows, I have no idea. I used to tape other stuff like Dr. Who since it came on at midnight or 1am where I lived).

By the time Fire Walk With Me came out I was in college and just didn't see many movies at the theater and then it was usually at the "$1.00" theater which only had 2 or 3 screens and just played the most popular mainstream stuff.

I guess I'd put JFK at #1 followed by NATURAL BORN KILLERS, which I actually hated the first time I saw it. U-TURN is certainly his most underrated. Penn is great as is the rest of the cast. This certainly isn't a "deep" movie but I don't think it's try to be. Just a wild cast in a wild, fun movie.

In order of merit:

1.JFK (1991) ***1/2
2.Platoon (1986) ***1/2
3.Born on the Fourth of July (1989) ***1/2
4.Nixon (1995) ***1/2
5.The Doors (1991) ***
6.Alexander (2004) **1/2
7.Natural Born Killers (1994) **

I've missed out on quite a few of his films, but then I can't say that Stone is a director I would go out of my way to pursue - I do have SALVADOR (1986), WALL STREET (1987) and U-TURN (1997) on VHS, however...

Born on the Fourth of July (1989) ***
Natural Born Killers (1994) **

I'd like to try KILLERS again, as I think I can appreciate more what Stone was trying to say now than I did when it first came out.

Having seen a very good documentary of the JFK assasination recently, and having heard interviews with important people who know what they're talking about, in addition to computer re-enactments and so forth, and having seen some film clips of Stone's film, I perceive the movie JFK to be inaccurate and I have no "desire" to see the movie.

Not my favorite director in the world by any stretch of the imagination; his films began as opulent extravaganzas and their self-importance only increases as he continues. My favorite of his films is Born on the Fourth of July, with Salvador as a close second. I'll have to give Platoon another chance sometime soon.
