But then again, if we do get anamorphic releases (or even Blu-rays, I wouldn't be surprised) there's bound to be something wrong with it. The laserdiscs (Definitive) missed a scene, the SE VHS had the pinkish hue, the SE dvd had lightsaber inconsistencies, hue issues and the score channels reversed, and the original trilogy dvd was non-anamorphic. So Lucas can be trusted to never keep his promise, but he always manages to screw it up one way or the other, apparently.

In all fairness, the missing scene on the Definitive Collection LD set was fixed for later pressings.

As I said I’m reading the Making of Star Wars book and I’m near the end. It’s amazing what they did and how much pain ILM suffered to make those revolutionary effects. When you read this book it’s more obvious that it’s necessary to preserve this original version. It’s history, plain and simple.

I agree but it cuts both ways: reading about the history of the movie not only convinced me that the OOT needs to be preserved, but also made me better understand Lucas' desire to get ANH "right" in his eyes.

I don't know if this has been posted anywhere, but this is a very interesting read on the initial reviews of the OT...

Interesting.  I think that the single factor that dominates that disparity is the difference in both the number and the expectation of movie critics from 1977-1983 and 1999-2005.  But I would be speculating.
I remember how lukewarm the critical reception was for the two sequels (wow I'm old).  The local critics on television and in newspapers really went after both films.  Outside of the '77 original, the best reviews a film having Lucas' name anywhere in the credits (as director or producer) were for American Graffiti and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Since this made me LOL (mainly after the 2 minute mark), I thought other Star Wars fans would enjoy it:

Something I don't understand. Didn't "ESB making of" book already exist? I thought they are republishing that. This is a completely new book?
If this is any thing like the "Making of Star Wars" book, I'm all over it.  That one was amazing.

Three years ago, they said that they were going to take the existing making-of book for ESB and expand it with a ton of unseen pictures and some new text. Since Rinzler appears to be the only credited author, I'm guessing that LFL went a different way and had him write an all new book.

Yes, but "Once Upon a Galaxy" is full of Lucas interviews that contradict what he says about the saga these days, and a lot of on set tensions are documented too. Carrie Fisher's personal problems are even hinted at. I fear it will never be reprinted, and my only copy is slowly falling apart.

Yeah, Carrie Fisher really kept those problems a secret.

For what it's worth, there's multiple used copies Once Upon A Galaxy on eBay for under $10 right now. I'm sure those copies are beat up but if you're just looking for a reading copy or don't want to put any more wear on your copy, I think that price is pretty good.

It was a competitive year for boys properties, but Star Wars once again grabbed the top slot, demonstrating its enormous staying power even after 33 years.

With 2009 year-end figures placing Star Wars 40% ahead of any other toy license, the Power of the Force continues to thrive, according to industry research company The NPD Group. U.S. retail toy sales for the license in 2009 exceeded $480M, supported by all-new episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and a robust collector market engaged in the live-action Saga. Success in the toy arena continues to translate to many other licensed product categories, including publishing, apparel, consumer electronics and housewares.

“After more than three decades, Star Wars continues to resonate with audiences and consumers, both in the boys demographic and with fans who’ve grown up with the franchise”

Still an animation powerhouse in its second season on Cartoon Network, Star Wars: The Clone Wars continues to attract new fans in the key demographic of boys 6-11. Bringing an all-new Star Wars adventure to TV each week, the cutting-edge computer-animated series has kept the brand squarely in the public eye and has introduced an ever-expanding array of new characters, creatures and vehicles into the inter-galactic lexicon. The success of The Clone Wars has helped to keep Star Wars relevant for a new generation of boys, and the licensing success is now rivaling the heights experienced during the blockbuster live-action films.

In addition, 2010 marks the 30th anniversary of Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back. Celebrating the fan-favorite installment of the live-action Saga, the milestone will be commemorated with a year’s worth of intergalactic activities – including massive fan events, charity screenings, exclusive product promotions and much, much more.

“After more than three decades, Star Wars continues to resonate with audiences and consumers, both in the boys demographic and with fans who’ve grown up with the franchise,” said Howard Roffman, President of Lucas Licensing. “The continued success of Star Wars: The Clone Wars is an indication that once again a whole new generation of young fans have been engaged by the Saga, and we are still able to connect with fans of the original movies with activities such as those surrounding the anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back.”

Should not come really as a surprise then

Except that technically the cow is the milk's mother.

This is as good a time as any to remind you to not try milking a bull.

Charity screenings were announced Friday. L.A. screening with Ford is sold out and also the Saturday 7pm in Chicago w/ Lucas.

I can only imagine what kind of standing ovation Ford is going to get at this screening. And I bet the audience will holler it up when he delivers the "I know" line onscreen!

Not that it really makes a difference but I doubt either of them will stick around (or arrive early enough) to watch the movie.

Went to the 3pm showing @ the Field Museum. While it was kind of neat, it was also a little disappointing. Screen wasn't that big and also the material of the screen caused sparklies during scenes with white/lighter colors. Don't know if it was due to the gain of the material and/or since they normally show 3-D movies maybe the screen material was tailored for that? Movie itself was sourced from the same master/DI as the 2004 DVD, had the off-colored lightsabers and updated Emperor scenes. Too bad this wasn't at an actual movie theater.

So they basically showed a DVD?

I've wondered if there are film prints of the '04 versions, as the AFI screenings timed to the award they gave Lucas in 2005 were the '97's.

While they never specified a resolution at no time did I feel I was watching a DVD. I watch the DVD's on a 106" 16X9 area at home, this screen was probably 3-4x larger and I was sitting close to the front.

Starwars.com has updated with an article on the L.A. charity screening. From this I get the impression Ford was there for the entire screening.

Also happy birthday to Empire, 30 years old today.

Happy birthday to my favoritest of the Star Wars films, and one of the best movies I've ever seen.

This is the first movie to actually make me feel old. This is the first movie i had pre-release excitement for!

30 years old and no film has yet to replace this as my favourite film of all time and I'd be surprised if any do. It has been close though (Fellowship of the Ring was close)

May not be the greatest film ever made but its still my favourite - pink lightsabers notwithstanding :)

Happy 30th to my 2nd favourite Star Wars film!

It is that time of year again.  E3 brings with it another Star Wars treat similar to last year's The Old Republic.

That guy looks like Sam Witwer.  Pretty cool, but I'd rather see gameplay.  I played the demo of the original and hated it.  I hope this one's better.
