I believe the force is strong with her and that she is ready to start her training (although I'm still not sure she's ready to see Anakin burned to a crisp). So if I do start watching the movies with her, in what order do we watch them? I've always thought IV-VI first, then I-III in order to preserve the surprise of who Luke's father is. But I've also seen suggestions of IV, V, I, II, III, VI to show the rise of Luke (IV, V), then the rise and fall of Anakin (I, II, III), and eventually Luke's victory and Anakin's redemption (VI).

Any thoughts?

Darren
Regardless of age, I think it's best to view the films in order of release - the way most of us saw them.

i also seen all of the 1936-1940 DVD sets of flash gordon (3 of those) and 1 buck rogers set.

@least those people knew it was time to ham it up. but acting in 1-6 didn't even have any fun at all. no hamming it up.

Don't know what films you were watching, but there was plenty of fun in the OT. There was even some in the prequels too, just not as much.

Anyone else notice MTV is showing all the movies this weekend?

Yup! Watched AOTC yesterday while doing some work. ROTS and ANH are on today. I purposely saved some work for today, so I can do it while they are on.

This belongs in another forum, but I am going to share it in this thread, as a gift to SW fans who might not play many video games

The Old Republic

And it is certainly a gift.

Wow! Chuck that was stunning! That's what a Star Wars CG movie should look like IMO, not that kiddie thing Lucas gave us last year, and what was that about? Saving Jabbas son 'stinky' or something? tut tut

That cinematic had better visuals than most movies. Fantastic.

Very impressive trailer. Thanks for posting that. Were the characters in that CG animated or were they human models? Because if the former, that's the best CG animation of human characters I have ever seen.

Re: *** Official STAR WARS Saga (episodes I to VI) Discussion Thread: Part 4

E3 is this week, and I've seen some staggering visual tech out of that (Assassin's Creed 2 has another amazing cinematic trailer). This trailer is probably the sharpest (and most expensive - this level of quality is million$ per minute, I believe). I can't answer that question, Sam. Devil May Cry (an action game with cutscenes like this) uses actors, though they accentuate the physical actions in post.

The game won't look quite this good, but it'll probably be closer than we think.

WOW! That's certainly the best video game trailer I've ever seen and it looks like one of the coolest things ever to come out of the SW universe. Very impressive.

You know what I'd like to see? A CGI version of the Heir To the Empire trilogy by Timothy Zahn with the original actors providing the voices. I'd pay to see that.

So would I! Although they'll have to digitally process Carrie Fisher's voice, she hardly sounds like "Princess Leia" anymore...

Any suggestions for the voice of Thrawn? Hugo Weaving perhaps, considering the stellar job he did in V For Vendetta?

Closer Look at The Making of The Empire Strikes Back
  August 10, 2009

While you may have caught a glimpse of this upcoming book in our Comic-Con coverage a couple weeks ago, we've now got a clean cover image of The Making of The Empire Strikes Back by Lucasfilm's J.W. Rinzler to share.

We're able to report that early passes of this book are absolutely brimming with never-before-published photos, and the length matches that of the deluxe Star Wars edition printed two years ago -- 372 pages.

Foreword by Alien/Blade Runner/Gladiator director Ridley Scott.

The Making of the Empire Strikes Back
will be available in 2010 and is being published by Del Rey Books.

Stay tuned to starwars.com for further reports of this highly-anticipated book to be released for Empire's 30th anniversary...

Wow I am excited

Awesome cover! The Star Wars making-of book is the best of its kind that I've ever read so I have high hopes for the ESB one.

To the best of my recollection, they had said that the ESB book would be more a reprint of the 1980 making-of book and be supplemented with pictures and some new content but since J.W. Rinzler is the only person credited, it looks like alot (all?) of this book may be new material.

The first Rinzler book is outstanding, so very much looking forward to the next. I'd also recommend the Indiana Jones making of- book by Rinzler. Reading it, you really get a sense of the joy of movie making. Not to say he doesn't describe the hard work and frustration too, but the overall picture is of people having the times of their lives. Will look forward to the Empire book tremendously.
I have the first SW book and the Indiana Jones book and they're both outstanding. Can't wait for the ESB book...especially since it's devoted to my favorite movie of all-time.
What a coincidence. I’m right in the middle of reading the Star Wars making of and seeing this news is great. This book is longer than I expected. Its font is so small and it contains so much information. I read the Indiana Jones book which covered 4 films faster!

Here's an off the wall question/ request:  when pre-production began on Episode III, Rick McCallum cited a painter as a source of inspiration for the production.  McCallum said this artist started his career using a wide range of colors, but by the time he died, he paintings were almost all black.  He mentioned the artists name, but I do not remember who it was.  I've searched through the SW.com databank, but I can't find the quote, nor did I see it in the Art of EIII.  Keep in mind, it was not one of the actual conceptual artists utilized for the prequels, but an outside painter who simply provided an inspiration (light to dark) for the production.  My other try may be in one of the SW Insider magazines, but I'll have to dig them out of storage.

Thanks!
Pat

Does anyone think that anamorphic versions of the original unaltered trilogy will be special features of the eventual Blu-Ray editions? I know that people were up in arms that the DVD originals were non-anamorphic. At the time, I thought people were just complaining to complain. The original originals were finally released on DVD. I thought they should be happy. I was. However, I finally understood it almost 3 years ago when my family bought our first 1080p 16X9 42 Inch HDTV and I watched a non-anamorphic movie. Right then, I completely understood the cries of the fans. The two non-anamorphic movies I own on DVD are Volcano and the Armageddon: The Criterion Collection. Does anyone know if Blu-Ray versions of these are coming out?
I think Steve Sansweet recently mentioned Blu-Ray versions but gave no time frame.  I don't expect the anamorphic versions of the originals to be included, but it would be a Blu-Ray player seller if they were.

Can't remember: did the non-anamorphic versions include the "good thing you don't taste good" line and "bring me my ship?"  If not, there'll still be some sore spots even if they are included.  But, I can live with that disappointment.

Yeah, those lines are on the non-anamorphic DVDs.

Cool.  I need to hit my zoom button and watch some OOT soon!

You seem to have your finger on the pulse of most things.  Do you think we'll ever see some anamorphic cuts?

I doubt it but I wouldn't have thought that they'd have released the originals in any form at all on DVD either so what do I know. I love Star Wars in its original form and in its special edition form but my dream is that Lucas will take a tip from Speilberg and the Close Encounters Blu-ray and release a disc with all the various incarnations of each of the movies.

Agreed. Here's hoping...

If he'd just give the original trilogy a basic restoration every fan would be happy. He can alter his versions if he'd like, but the fans would still have the original versions in a good quality release. I don't understand (apart from the apparent personal issues) why Lucas wouldn't release the originals while he supports the film preservation of other movies.

By the time SW comes out on BD, even if Lucas relents and provides an anamorphic transfer of the OOT as demanded, in 480i SD, no doubt there will then be lots of complaints about why it isn't in full HD 1080p...

Regarding Star Wars on dvd Lucas has never held his word. First he said the original trilogy would never be released on dvd (it did), he said that Episode I would be released on dvd after Ep. III was in theaters (it didn't) and then he said that the trilogy would be released after Ep. III, and that didn;'t happen either.
But then again, if we do get anamorphic releases (or even Blu-rays, I wouldn't be surprised) there's bound to be something wrong with it. The laserdiscs (Definitive) missed a scene, the SE VHS had the pinkish hue, the SE dvd had lightsaber inconsistencies, hue issues and the score channels reversed, and the original trilogy dvd was non-anamorphic. So Lucas can be trusted to never keep his promise, but he always manages to screw it up one way or the other, apparently.

Lucas can always call the originals "workprints" if it makes him feel better.  I think releasing the original trilogy(unaltered) on Blu would be a huge, huge advantage in the sales department.  As far as I'm concerned, no original included, no sale.
