Well, I saw Fanboys (the movie about a group of friends trying to see The Phantom Menace in late 1998) yesterday and it was definitely a love letter to Star Wars and fandom. However, an hour and a half of Star Wars in-jokes and OT love didn't work as a movie either. Its heart was the right place but those guys need to move on too.

I don't assume the people quoted in the film are less psychologically healthy than these people.

Are people opposed to politician X less psychologically healthy than supporters of his opponent(s)? What if they're the same people (as they usually are)?

I guess that's the truth. SW is the only film that I went to see at least 10 times theatrically, including the time I saw it in re-release. I stopped going when the "Special Editions" were released in the theatres. At that point, it stopped being "my" STAR WARS and became someone elses. In hindsight, I have to wonder what fascinated me about SW. When I finally decided to watch the "special edition" of STAR WARS I couldn't help but think that the story really wasn't all that I remembered it to be.

Still, the original iteration of this film holds a special place with me based just on the number of theatrical visits I made in order to see it. it also sticks because of the craziness that ensued when it was originally released. I still remember the news stories about people who saw it forty or fifty times in its original release. I even vaguely remember a story about somene who saw it over 100 times. IIRC, a ticket back then was about $3.50, so that guy spent over 350 bucks on STAR WARS initial release.

What would 350 1977 dollars be today?

I knew Edwin or someone would respond to any get over it comments. There would be no need for any love fest documentary. Those kind don't sell.

Sorry Edwin but you're arguement makes no sense.

That bit about a "founder" of the Jedi Church being assaulted made me curious. I looked it up. Good for a chuckle.

I also thought the blurb on this site was good for a laugh.

Well, a person who was not a STAR WARS nut might say such a thing if a documentary overly friendly to George Lucas was made, so I don't entirely agree with you. Also, I don't agree that a "love letter" doco is automatically unsaleable, especially where it concerns this particular fillm. STAR WARS seems unique in the ferocity of devotion from its hardcore fan base.

Re: *** Official STAR WARS Saga (episodes I to VI) Discussion Thread: Part 4

Edwin, minus the 1997 Special Edition, the original "Star Wars" would've made $1,065.7 billion domestically in today's marketplace. Add in the SE ticket sales and the movie would have a total of $1,282.46 billion. That translates to roughly 178.1 million theater admissions, which is second all-time to "Gone with the Wind" (202 million total tickets sold). These remain the only two films in history to sell more than 150 million tickets domestically.

There's alot of us Lucas Lovers here on this thread that really do have no other life and in fact we go to a support group.

And alot of us do laugh at some of the lunacy of stuff making fun of SW and other films too.

But it's much more juicy to group us all in the same category isn't it?

And yet we do get to include you in 'our' group since you're fervently posting and pointing out that we haven't gotten over Lucas since this thread exists. You're confirming what you're saying about everyone else! Well, welcome to our club Edwin.

Next meeting is at 7pm....can you bring some chicken salad?

Terry,

Thanks for the info, especially regarding total ticket sales. I find it easier to understand the impact a film had by its actual ticket sales vs. its box office take: total ticket sales are unaffected by any inflation factor, unlike a dollar amount. I'm surprised to learn that STAR WARS is No.2 behind GWTW. To me, that says a lot about how influential the film has been on a lot of film fans.

I'd just like to compliment you on the level of research that you do regarding box office stats. The data you publish makes some interesting comparisons. The work you put into it is something I know I could never do. Again, my thanks.

Re: *** Official STAR WARS Saga (episodes I to VI) Discussion Thread: Part 4

I've never understood the mentality of the people who don't like SW, but yet can't stop talking about it and/or Lucas. To my knowledge it's the only film franchise where people actually go out of their way and make it their mission in life to say how much they don't like it. For example, I don't like the Harry Potter movies....I don't have any problem with people who do, they're just not my cup of tea. However, I would never go into a Harry Potter discussion forum and talk ad nauseum about how much I don't like the films, how I think the director sucks, etc. To me, it's just a waste of time to drone on about something you don't like when you could be out enjoying something that actually does interest you. I guess I'll just never get the masochist mentality of some individuals.

That's the difference between caring about something and being indifferent towards it. If you were formerly a big Harry Potter/ JK Rowling fan and changed for some reason, it'd be a different story.

You guys just tell me where you're meeting. Of course, after eating any Chicken salad I might make, you all might think that I had signed on as Palpatine's secret new Sith apprentice.

On another note, my man Darth gets religion.

I have to admit I have not read all of the Star Wars threads. After all, the Star Wars discussion here has to be the biggest thread ever on HTF. Generally, I do not believe that anyone who takes the time to post into this thread really hates Star Wars or George Lucas. I really believe that any of the criticism that gets leveled against the films or Lucas comes from a passion for the SW universe, not a hatred for it. Anybody who really hated STAR WARS would not bother posting in here.

It's actually the passion for this franchise that results in a ton of Lucas bashing, especially when Lucas's vision diverges from the expectations of the fans. For example, older fans can't help but feel a little dissed when Lucas will not relent and do a proper release of the OOT.

I'm totally on board with that and see no problem taking him to task when it's called for. Hell, I bashed him harder than anyone for that butchered release of the OOT. What I get sick of, however, is the "Lucas raped my childhood", "Lucas is the devil", "Luca$ stole our money" crowd that just wants to bitch for the sake of bitching. They're the ones that seriously need to move on and find something else to occupy their time.

I am not sure if this was ever shown or discussed. But, a friend sent me this. And I couldn't stop laughing. It was a skit (in 2-parts) from the Conan O'Brian Show. They sent Triumph to interview some Star Wars fans at a convention. Enjoy...

That's probably the best bit Triumph ever did for the show. The other one that sticks in my head is when he's outside the Michael Jackson trial. Absolutely hilarious.

Re: *** Official STAR WARS Saga (episodes I to VI) Discussion Thread: Part 4

The only aspect of the whole Star Wars phenomenon that (to me) is just too cheesy is that it gave birth to perhaps the biggest internet cliche there is: Star Wars-based screennames.

Darth Bob, Boba Frank, and on and on and on... I guess "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" affected me more than I realize, especially the cut extended scene that mentioned this very thing. "Darth Randall".

"Wampa One"

You just know there had to be hundreds of people with that screenname out there before Kevin Smith made a joke about it.

You know...If you are going to go out and act and dress like that...expect to get some grief. Heck, how many times have you seen or gone to a game. And you will see a guy with no shirt covered in paint in 20 degree weather and made fun of him. It happens. And from what the video showed. The fans seemed to be having a good time with it. I mean if after a few minutes they were insulted they would have walked away and not started lightsabre fights and re-enacting scenes.

Yup. I love Star Wars but I don't get the need to dress up like the characters. Even if I did, I'd admit that Triumph's segment is hysterical.

Let's not forget that the segment makes fun of LOTR fanboys ("wizards get their food at Burger King?") and Star Trek as well (gotta love the Spock guy not quite giving the "live long and prosper" sign. ).

Another thing. No one should be upset. Years ago when Shatner did the "Get A Life" SNL skit. People were nervous that fans would be upset. Yet, for years after it was constantly being shown to the fans at the conventions.
