Again, another well-made episode, but oh so little actually happens.

The stuff on Kobol was good drama, but we aren't that much closer to understanding the importance of Kobol. And absolutely no Boomer, or Helo, or Starbuck this week.

I'm actually glad they laid off that this week because, if they had been part of the ep, the other parts would have suffered.

I love the fact that the writing and acting are so good that, even when most of the action takes place with the "second tier" set of characters it's still really good stuff.

I really thought Cally or Tyrol were going to buy it this week and, knowing how they kill people off on this show, I was really worried.

I thought this ep was the best of the new season so far.

Both the action-oriented Kobol scenes and the political intrigue scenes on Galactica were compelling drama. (I'm still not quite sure what Six is trying to tell Baltar about Kobol, though!)

Probably the biggest impact on the future of the series wasn't the rescue of the survivors on Kobol, but rather the revelation to the rest of the fleet that their "Madam President" is dying of breast cancer. She now truly does seem to them to be fulfilling the prophecy set forth by their ancestors. And how could Tigh even think about imposing Marshall Law at that point? There's only 47000 or so humans left in the universe. Is he really stupid enough to possibly incite a civil war that could drastically reduce even that paltry number?

One thing about the attack on the Cylons on Kobol. Up unitl they realize all the Cylons are by the gun, I was wondering why they didn't go for the dish vs. the gun, since it was only guarded by 2 Cylons. So my answer, which I had to asssume, was that maybe they thought taking out the dish alone would not ensure the Cylons could not still use the gun effectively against the SAR craft.

But that got contradicted when the Chief was pushing to now attack the unguarded Dish.

My respect for Adama dropped a few notches after watching Tigh in this past episode. Tigh's theoretical positives cannot make up for his demons of alcoholism and lack of leadership skill, especially under pressure. Adama clearly prefers loyalty and friendship to competency. A good commander would never have someone like Tigh as XO.

What does everyone think of Adama vs. The President. I really think Adama was clearly in the wrong to have her arrested and I totally side with Apollo.

I thought Tigh did pretty well under military pressure, such as the attack by the Cylons, but once that threat was over, and he had time to take a breath (and a drink), everything went to hell in a handbasket.

Does anyone else think that Tigh seemed to drink less in the 1st season before his wife turned up. She's clearly a bad inluence on him. I certainly think the drinking on duty is a much newer occurence.

Apollo talked about Tigh being a drunk in S1, and that was a big reason why Apollo didn't like him; he just doesn't think he's reliable. He was a drunk, and they showed it. He got control over it when Adama called him on it. Once his wife joined him, that went out the window.

re Adama vs. The President. While we're voting, it'd be interesting to know if those voting have military background or not. I don't have a military background, and I sided with the President. However, it's a tough call because Adama has been doing what he's doing for a long time. It is only realistic that they have some concern about someone who was thrust into a role she was nowhere near prepared for -- or appointed for. Removing her from power, and the subsequent declaration of Martial Law seems excessive.

re Adama's Tigh appointment as XO. I struggled with that a bit as well. I haven't really come to a conclusion yet, but I'm inclined to believe Adama wouldn't have a complete incompetent 1 position away from leading the fleet. One comment I will make is it isn't just about Adama feeling Tigh will be blindly loyal to him; it is also about Adama being loyal to Tigh. They showed this earlier. Adama promised he'd get out of the dregs, and that he'd bring Tigh with him when he did.

I cheated and read spoilers for the rest of the first half of this season. I'm confident the show will pick up and the majority of those investing their viewing time will be rewarded.

I too do not really think Adama has the legal right to remove the president. At least based on what we know of colonial law and the fact that if, as president, she is like commander-in-chief, then it should have been legal for her to send Starbuck on that mission.

Guess we'll have to see how it plays out.

I got the impression that Adama didn't like Tigh's wife in the first season, that she was a bad influence on him. Now, we are seeing that is true.

I'm not military, but I side with Adama. It's a tough one, but under the circumstances the people have the best chance of survival with Adama than with the President.

This is probably true but it still does not give him the right to stage a military coup. Just because he has the ability to enforce the coup does not give him the moral authority to stage one.

I totally agree with this statement but I did not bother to go into that level of detail. Adama's friendship and loyalty goes both ways and I believe it weakens him as a military leader. We have also seen it when Starbuck crashed on the planet and Adama kept looking for her at great cost and peril to the other pilots and the fleet. Of course he had no problem with Tigh flushing a bunch of his fire-fighting crew into space because the ship was in danger.

I'm surprised no one mentioned the buzzing the President heard in her ears when Tigh's wife was there. She could heard the buzzing of the Cylon?
I enjoyed the episode and don't understand the criticisms of the season from posters here. It's building like a good book.

I was thinking the same thing. I too do not understand the criticms of this early part of the season. I'm really digging it. When it comes down to it I think that the lack of Starbuck and most of all Adama does hurt the show some.

Part of that moral authority certainly must include being able to protect the people of the fleet? Especially when the President is taking steps to undermine his ability to do so?

Good point above about the lack of Adama (at least) from the early stories. That could be impacting my enjoyment somewhat.

Thats my basic view. I'm don't have a military background, but sympathize with Tigh.

From his viewpoint, the president has gone insane, and making commands that have SERIOUSLY endangered the fleet.

Weather or not you believe that the President is REALLY fulfilling prophecy, her ACTIONS are clearly the result of taking dangerous drugs, and she should not be leader of the fleet.

But I don't think Tigh should be in control either, and its obvious HE DOES NOT WANT TO BE, but feels its his only option, given the lunacy of the predident.

It might have been better for him to pick a successor, or call for another election... but thats hindsite.

I'm surprised his WIFE did not tell him to place that guy from the PENAL SHIP as interem president? Thats what I thought was going to happen.

Good episode anyway. I'm sure next week we will see the military split, and the president will be put back in power.... which I don't really want to see.

The people on the fleet are being put through extraordinary circumstances. I'd say, basically, that there entire society has been ripped apart. Clinging on to the vestiges of Colonial society (i.e. the constitution, etc.) may not be the best option to keep everyone alive so they can find a new home, where they can build a new society with new laws.

I do not agree with this at all. She has gone insane? It is clear in the BSG society that religion and prophecy is much stronger than in today's Western society so her actions in the BSG world seem extreme but not totally out of line or insane. Also have to disagree with her actions causing extreme danger to the fleet. They lose one pilot, who normally die several at a time, and the Cylon raider and the fleet is toast?

Sure times are different and extremely dangerous but that does not mean that the better form of government is a military dictatorship. You have a problem with the President, take it up with the council of 12 and get her impeached. Besides in S1, Adama has made a bunch of emotional decisions that put the fleet in serious jeopardy and no one is calling for his resignation or locked him up.

I said thats how Tigh feels, and its clearly a rational opinion.
Her actions DID endanger the fleet, though she feels that her "mystic powers" have allowed this risk, in hopes of greater gains in the future.

But... I think we both agree he handled it incorrectly. It would have been better to give the corrupt politicians "just enough" power to make them think they are involved, but none really.

Considering they wiped out 99.9999% of the population, but care enough to spend HUGE resources chasing the few survivors across the galaxy....

Well... must be a PRETTY DARN GOOD reason!

Sure, they want to breed with humans.... but I'm sure they could have used a few on Caprica?

Why bother with Galatica at all? They don't seem like a threat? Seems like a plot-hole now, but I'm sure the writers are working on something clever.

The rationale was that the dish was believed to be constantly guarded by two Cylons, while the missile launcher was seen to be guarded by one, and only intermittently at that, since the work on the missile launcher occasionally took all three Cylons to accomplish. Crashdown decided it would be easier to sneak up on three working Cylons and catch them by surprise than it would be to attack two Cylons on constant sentry duty.

Also, and this is just my own ramblings, it seems to me that a single, well-placed shot at a missile battery would blow the whole thing -- but I don't know enough about ordnance to know if this was a possibility.

Even so, once it became clear that the dish was unguarded, it was a major error on Crashdown's part to continue blindly with his original plan.

I'm not military and I agree with what Adama did. The president in their universe is not the CIC of the military. As such she seriously over stepped her bounds by persuading a pilot to disobey orders. Plus she and Adama had previously discussed that he would have final say on military issues. The orders given to a pilot are military business IMO.

I'm sure Adama had a plan with what to do with her. Given his belief in democracy he could have been planning to impeach her and have an election. Or he perhaps was just going to cool her heels in the brig for a bit to remind her who was in control. We won't know until he wakes up. Hopefully it's in the next episode.

I also agree with Commander William Adama (Lee is also an Adama)

Face it, in a situation where they are under attack, the Commander of the fleet felt that priviliged information (the fact that Adama doesn't know where Earth is or if it even exists) was a betrayal by Roslin. The Kobol explorer party was under attack, and Adama needed Starbuck and the Raider to bomb the Base Star. You saw what happened when he had to send Boomer as the backup plan.

I may be in the minority but the political vs. military issue in the show is of no interest to me. I get enough of that on a daily basis.
