This one is difficult. There are 2 films I'm sure I've seen, though it's been so long I remember only a general feeling of liking (A Matter of Life & Death) or a general feeling of not liking (Thief of Bagdad). In addition, I'm almost positive I've seen some others I'm not listing, but can't remember enough about those to even hazard a guess.

The Red Shoes (1948) (with/Emeric Pressburger) - - stunning in nitrate dye transfer
Black Narcissus (1947) (with/Emeric Pressburger) - 1/2 - really should sit down and watch again, this time the DVD
A Matter of Life and Death - - just perfect from beginning to end. on second viewing, now a top 20 film
The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943) (with/Emeric Pressburger) - - bloody, blustering, buffonery brilliant!
Thief of Baghdad - - silly effects and story nonetheless this is a delightful and rich story marvelously told
49th Parallel - - a truly remarkable film that progresses and improves from moment to moment so that you don't think it could better and it keeps getting better.
Edge of the world - - marginal and dull film that feels longer than Colonel Blimp, but barely makes ninety minutes.

It's quite sad that Powell's career fell apart after the breaking up of his partnership with Pressburger but there's enough magic in those Archers films to make anyone envious.

I have a few Powell/Pressburgers films in my unwatched DVDs pile - THE LIFE AND DEATH OF COLONEL BLIMP, BLACK NARCISSUS and PEEPING TOM - and I've yet to pick up THE EDGE OF THE WORLD, CONTRABAND (1940) and I KNOW WHERE I'M GOING!.

Anyway, I wouldn't mind watching GONE TO EARTH (1948), THE ELUSIVE PIMPERNEL (1950) and OH, ROSALINDA! (1955), either.

I simply have to see more films from this famous duo.

I love Black Narcissus mostly for it's amazing cinematography (I saw the ending coming a mile away).

Didn't care for The Red Shoes at all.

Edge of the World -

pppttt, not interested, and I'm always interested in old cultures and what not, this is boring.

49th Parallel -

As the film progresses it keeps getting better and better. I didn't know it was Lawrence Olivier until I saw the credits but I utterly loved the character he played, and the Leslie Howard part was truly and absolutely amazing. The bits in the christian commune were spellbinding and the end to that sequence ripped me up. Then there is the final bit with Raymond Massey that was quite simply some of the best stuff in the film.

Want to watch this film again, right now. Incredible, incredible, incredible filmmaking team, this and Matter of Life and Death, and Colonel Blimp and Red Shoes, I salute them. Wow.

I don't think they had a falling out, they just decided to go separate ways for the most part - they did collaborate later on a couple of films.

Updating with A Canturbury Tale

Agreed that it's fantastic, I think I'll like it more on repeat viewings.

This is in the same vein as A Matter of Life and Death as it has a minor element related to belief in the supernatural and how the lives of ordinary people can be touched by it.

I wish I'd seen this in the proper setting of a theatre with an audience, but I missed the chance earlier this year.
