Technically, no such backup rules exist at all for films. There are backup provisions for computer software, but nothing for films.

Maybe in the US/Canada, but recently a French judge ruled otherwise on fim copy-protection limiting backup copies...!

julien would you be willing to sell that dm ld to me? would you mind emailing me an asking price? i really have been looking a long time for this title, and am a huge depeche mode fan...im anxiously awaiting your decision.

I can provide you an old LD-700 [eMail or PM if interested], mechanically perfect but the optics are out of alignment so that it mistracks and produces a crappy picture, especially on CLV discs. Fortunately the low-power diode laser couldn't set anything in the world on fire.

so the laser on my cld-d704 might be stronger and COULD catch the fixed disc on fire? i was wondering about that.

im trying to find one in this city first, so theres no shipping etc, maybe one where the audio doesnt work, for like 20 bucks, but the laser works and it spins.

So to be safe i should be getting a player that specifically has as strong a laser as my good machine?

God i hope Julien sells me the other copy heh.

Ill probably still test fixing this other disc though in the name of science and experimentation. I also might call someone i know that used to work in plastics etc, if he can add to this.

No, no, I mean that diode lasers as used in LaserDisc players could not possibly ignite anything, as they are too low-powered. The waste heat from an old gas-tube player, ot the high voltage power supply, could concievably ignite an explosive mixture of gasses, but I do not think this has ever happened. The trouble you will run into is that a "patched" disc is not necessarily structurally sound, so it could break into sharp-edged flying chunks when it gets up to 1800 RPM, and concievably not only destroy your LDP but also maim or slay you.

I think Christopher meant that none of these lasers could set anything on fire.

The risk you have with a cracked disc is that the force created by the rotational speed can make it explode (not literally fire explode, just break apart). The laser has nothing to do with it.

I find the fact that LDs run at up to 1800 rpm slightly scary, even with discs that are perfectly all right.

I'd keep good distance if I'd ever try to play a damaged disc.

i had been unaware of danger at first and tried to play it before. It didnt do anything or get any worse, so i would assume that sealing the crack shouldnt make it come apart now...but i m not an expert
