I’m really lacking when it comes to silent films.

Me too, though I've made Saturday nights my official "watch-a-silent-movie" night. I've knocked off a slew of Doug Fairbanks films; now I need to work on the Langs that I have plus the Buster Keaton set.

I'm much better on Hitchcock, though there are some of his harder to find films I haven't seen.

ALFRED HITCHCOCK

Family Plot (1976) - 1/2 - good comic Hitch
Frenzy (1972) - - latter day Hitch at his best
Topaz (1969) - - latter day Hitch at his worst
Torn Curtain (1966) - - the right stars makes it work
The Birds (1963) - - the suspense is brilliant that lead is not
Psycho (1960) - - perfection
North by Northwest (1959) - - brilliant gobbledygook
Vertigo (1958) - - sheer genius
The Wrong Man (1956) - 1/2 - fogotten, but outstanding gem, great cast
The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) - - fluffy Hitch at his best, and that song is catchy too
The Trouble with Harry (1955) - - Hitch's best black comedy
To Catch a Thief (1955) - 1/2 - fluffy Hitch that's damned good fun
Rear Window (1954) - - took me a while but it is definitely perfect
Dial M for Murder (1954) - 1/2 - we've seen this before and better
I Confess (1953) - 1/2 - Hitch at his self indulgent worst, good lead performance though
Strangers on a Train (1951) - - How is a film like this, this damn good?
Rope (1948) - - it works, it really does work very f-ing well
Notorious (1946) - - takes a while to warm too but it has such a lovely glow
Spellbound (1945) - 1/2 - a bit of a stretcher, eh?
Lifeboat (1944) - - surprisingly brilliant piece
Shadow of a Doubt (1943) - - Hitch's best pre fifties US film
Saboteur (1942) - - hey wait, I saw this once before
Rebecca (1940) - - how he got such a good film out of such a bad novel I'll never know
The Lady Vanishes (1938) - - Fluffy Hitch perfection to rival his fifties peak
Sabotage (1936) - 1/2 - brilliant piece of shocking and suspenseful filmmaking
Secret Agent (1936) - 1/2 - good performances, but just never gels
The 39 Steps (1935) - 1/2 - a journeyman work of surpassing elegance and confidence, one of his best
The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934) - - damn good bit of entertainment.
Blackmail (1929) - - Brilliant work, regardless of the year of production, but especially so for 29
The Lodger (1927) - - Ahh, Hitch is born, but the question is, was the lead really really the killer? I think so.
The Mountain Eagle (1926) LOST
The Pleasure Garden (1925) LOST

ALFRED HITCHCOCK

Well, clearly I haven't seen enough films. I'll have to remedy that. I've only seen a few Hitchcocks, some of which I consider absolute masterpieces, some not so much. Here are the ones I've seen ranked in order of my preference.

Rear Window (1954)
North by Northwest (1959)
Psycho (1960)
Vertigo (1958)

The Birds (1963)
Notorious (1946)
Rebecca (1940)
The Master. My rough rankings:

1. North by Northwest
2. Vertigo
3. Rear Window
4. Notorious
5. Psycho
6. The Man Who Knew Too Much (54)
7. The Lady Vanishes
8. Rebecca
9. Strangers on a Train
10 To Catch a Thief
11 Frenzy
12 The 39 Steps
13 Marnie
14 Spellbound

I own most of the above on DVD. I have also seen Saboteur and The Birds, but didn't care too much for either.

If anyone wants to actually take the time to look at my list and make a suggestion as to what Hitchcock film is the best that I haven't seen, please do so (I am leaning towards Foreign Correspondent and Dial M for Murder).

Those would both be good choices. I did notice the absence of Shadow of a Doubt (which is what I'd suggest), which I think is one of Hitchcock's most overlooked & underrated films.

I did enjoy watching Frenzy (maybe 4 later). I'd put it above To Catch A Thief [just below Dial M for Murder].

Glad you enjoyed it.

would like to see Spellbound and Rope again [it's about time to unseal my Criterion Hitchcock Wrong Men & Notorious Women: Thrillers 1935-1946 box-set]. I probably did overrate Spellbound (very underrated around here) but I'm pretty sure Rope is my choice as one of Hitch's most underrated films.

And my choice for his most overrated movie is The Birds.

Probably time to rewatch it.

The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956)

I got The 39 Steps from Netflix today and also have some TV recordings of some of his films (though most of them have been misplaced ).

I'm curious if anyone who's seen Under Capricorn doesn't agree that it's his worst film. I'd be surprised, but you never know around here.

I've seen almost all Hitchcock's and it is FAR from his worst film. In fact it's a very interesting and sensitive film with careful characterization which I liked a lot though it begins very slow.
Almost every film is remarkable in a certain way, JUNO AND THE PAYCOCK is the really terrible one, talky, slow, stagy, repetitive with stereotyped characters and bad acting. The nadir of his career, no doubt while his other much malogned stage adaptation THE SKIN GAME isn't without interest.
