On Borrowed Time 4-28-05 TCM

JUST a heads up for anyone that may be a fan of this classic movie.
it will be on turner this thursday at 2:30 est.
this rarely gets any tv time for some reason and may be a forgotten movie at this point.
it isnt on dvd and doesnt look like it ever will be.

"Young Pud is orphaned and left in the care of his aged grandparents. The boy and his cantankerous old grandfather become inseparable friends. But Gramps is concerned for his grandson's future and wary of a scheming relative who seeks Pud's custody. One day Mr. Brink--an agent of Death--arrives to take Gramps "to the land where the woodbine twineth." Through a bit of trickery, Gramps confines Mr. Brink, and thus Death, to the top of an old apple tree, giving Gramps extra time to resolve issues about Pud's future."

it's my favorite movie and one of the first movies i ever saw when i was i kid in the early 70's.
saw it on uhf on a sat afternoon.

Thanks, Tony! I saw this a long time ago and enjoyed it - it's always great to see Lionel Barrymore. I actually thought recently about how I'd like to have it on DVD. But as you said, that probably won't happen.

I rented the VHS only two months ago. I enjoyed the film, but it had no lasting effect on me. I'm not as convinced that this won't pop up on DVD though. After all, it was released on VHS and stars Lionel Barrymore who is very underrepresented on DVD. I could easily see WB putting out a Barrymore box, and including this title. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Steve... Check out the Schedule page at the TCM website. They offer an e-mail "reminder" service, which I use quite extensively.

I have TCM's website bookmarked, but forgot (!) about the email reminder service. I really need to start watching the channel more than I do - I pay $$$ for cable every much and hardly watch any television... :b

Edit: I'd buy a Lionel Barrymore box set. A Walter Huston box would be nice, too.

I hadn't seen it before and watched it. The rapport between Barrymore and "Pud" is moving, although the kid lays it on a little thick occasionally, as does the movie. I liked the high concept. I'm surprised this hasn't been remade.

Edit: Actually, I guess any plot involving making Death wait would probably considered a remake of The Seventh Seal.

Watch for the uncredited appearance of a young Hans Conried (host of FRACTURED FLICKERS, the voice of Snidely Whiplash, Dr. T in THE 5000 FINGERS OF DR. T, etc.) as the first motorist to offer "Mr. Brink" (Sir Cedric Hardwicke) a ride at the very begiining of the movie.

please watch the movie.

despite some of the dated acting and dialog this is a great film and seriously needs to be released again to home video.

what a great year 1939 was for movies.

and it's the only one of those 150 that I want to buy. A great great film. Beulah Bondi and Lionel Barrymore are wonderful.
