HTF Anime Discussion Part VIII - Page 15

John,

Good to hear you are still collecting Wolf's Rain. I have high hopes for that one - I loved the first 5 episodes.

Have you been buying all the GITS SE's? If you are, pretty impressive!

On the Funimation thing - turns out there is some studio feedback discussion going on about the Funimation encodes in the forums at animeondvd. If anyone says anything interesting I'll report it here. In the end though - as harsh as I'm being I'm still going to watch and buy Burst Angel and FMA.

Thanks for the reassurance John.

I'm still pissed that vol.6 SE of GITS:SAC has to come with a tshirt - I don't want the friggin' XL shirt that won't fit me, and I don't want to spend the extra $$$ for it either. Ugh.

*end rant*

Todd:

Yep, I've been picking up the SEs all the way through.

Max:

Well, the SE that came with volume 3 did also. Maybe I can get my wife to wear them...

You going to SE the second GIG? There goes another $200+!

I'm watching the GITS 2 movie tonight for the first time with my brother. I went through that disk replacement program to fix the subtitles. Kind of a journey with that disk.

By the way, in the unlikely event that anyone listened to me, *DON'T* buy the "Wonderful Day's" ("Sky Blue") disk from DiscountAnimeDVD. F*cking bootleg - non anamorphic crap. As soon as I opened the UPS bag and saw the packaging I know I'd f*cked up.

ToddMcF:

Todd, Todd, Todd, what are we gonna do with you? You should've bought Wonderful Days from yesasia.com instead (where I bought mine). It's authentic Korean version with DTS. I've watched the movie 3 times. Very beautiful, but the story is lackluster, but visually stunning nonetheless (also some Korean VAs sound terrible....could just be a modified voice...but there is one character, a scientist, whose voice was grating to the ears).

As for ADV, I can give you a list of stuff I (and many others) despise them for.

Andrew:

Are you sure you watched the same series as I did? WHR's 1st half was very much "monster of the week" episode and got really boring, then 2nd half hit and kinda got interesting but the lack of focus kept the show from getting any better and the ending was anticlimatic and left a lot of us disappointed.

JohnAD:

Are the SE for GitS:SAC good? I have finished up all my R2 collection (26 months of collecting for 26 volumes + the 4 official logs (2 per each series)).
Todd:

Yeah, I'll get them to get me the IV version .

I'm really paranoid about buying anime online. I stick with well-known companies like DDD. I have very little confidence in a lot of the 'boutique' anime stores, A while back, one of the local stores here had an R2 copy of Inu Yasha with Chinese subs. I knew it was a boot, and that was the last time I shopped there.

Well I did say that it was a good watch not a great watch. The MOTW episodes were entertaining enough and the 2nd half got quite interesting. It just left me wanting a lot more information and background than was ever presented. The ending I do agree with. Although I suspected there would be a problem when I got to the last episode with so much story yet to be resolved.

I'm a bit of a fan of shows that are dark and Gothic in nature. Can anyone recommend other shows that have a gothic feel to them?
Andrew:

Depends on the level of gothic....most vampire stories have some gothic levels to them...stories like Hellsing to Blood: the Last Vampire to Tsukihime (forgot the American name they are giving this series). Then you also have crappy shows like Gilgamesh which has a high level of gothic elements surrounded by crappy animation and ugly character designs and bad storyplotting (although it comes from a popular shoujo manga). Then you have some light-hearted with comedic elements gothic stories like Rozen Maiden and I Wanna Be An Angel. Then you have sleeper hits like Princess Tutu and its dark gothic feel past ep 3. Then you have your lolita goth, bishounen goth, S&M goth, and variant fetish goth degree shows. Also, the thriller gothic story of Boogiepop Phantom and Paranoia Agent and Tehxnolyze.

/shrug

Depends on your taste. But gothic in Japan is getting hotter and hotter.

Hopefully a laptop!

Kong:

It's Lunar Legend Tsukihime.

All:

I made another big haul today. I got Chrono Crusade vols. 2-3, Ghost in the Shell: SAC vol. 6 SE, Gunslinger Girl vol. 1, Requiem from the Darkness vol. 1, Saiyuki vols. 8-9, and Wolf's Rain vol. 7. I was looking at a couple of other series (most notably Gundam SEED), but the local store was out of a lot of volume 1's.

Well, not much going on here, and... no anime watched ;_;

Did get some manga yesterday though. I finally got volume 4 of Hikaru no Go, and finished off Battle Angel Alita (Rerelease). Also got Berserk 7, Trigun Maximum 5, Fruits Basket 9, Get Backers 9, and Here is Greenwood 4. which brings me to a total of... 399 volumes of manga. And of course, I am outta shelf space again.

>> Todd, Todd, Todd, what are we gonna do with you?

Save me from myself I hope.

My Wonderful Days has DTS as well. I have no way to prove its a bootleg other than its non-anamorphic and the packaging is a cheesy clear case with blurry back art and no insert. There is also no company logo anywhere on it, just text. The main menu is static and sort of cheesy. Is yours anamorphic or letterboxed? Maybe mines real. There is an encode credit at the opening, a big "ME" or something - I can check tonight.

Honestly, the video quality is pretty good despite the letterboxed transfer.

Just wanted to report in about Ghost In the Shell 2: Innocence

My brother and I watched this last night. First off, kudo's to Dreamworks for an incredibly pristine transfer and blow your socks off discrete audio and earth shattering LFE. I have the corrected disk - subtitles are dead on. Kudo's to Go Fish Pictures for some of the most amazing CGI and technical design concepts I've seen. Kudo's to the animators for some amazing 2D integration with the amazing CGI. Finally, Kudo's to everyone involved for producing such a worthy sequel to an anime legend.

I love this movie - and instantly wanted to watch it again. In a nutshell, its beautiful, complicated, somewhat overdone on the metaphors and probably not going to please everyone. It pleased me though - in a big way. They nailed the BladeRunner inspired near future world. They challenged the viewers like they do in some of the more complex GITS SAC episodes. My brother and I had to double check with each other every once in a while to make sure we knew what was going on. I love that! And when the action hits, man does it hit hard.

A perfect film from my perspective - although I still think it won't please everyone.

Todd:

I can take some pics for you to see. Although my cover is not the same as the regular cover. Mine was a 1st print cover or something like that.

Woo:

Get Genshiken manga. Del Rey translated. Plot is about anime club & fandom in Japan. Very funny. ^^
post #435 of 2394
Kong:

That would be cool. Do you know if yours is anamorphic? I'm not sure what you are watching stuff on.

If you are watching on a 4:3 set, setting the DVD player "tv type" to "16:9/widescreen" will show a vertically stretched image.

If it doesnt stretch its letterbox (non anamorphic).
Kong,

I've seen Hellsing and Blood: The Last Vampire. I prefer the darker more serious Gothic stories. I'll look up the ones you listed.
Todd:

I normally use computer to test anamorphic lately, since the monitor has better resolution, I tend to look for faults on computer first (especially those with nasty interlacing problems and edge enhancements).

Andrew:

Well, Blood: the Last Vampire will be having its tv series debut this year in Japan, so look out for that via fansubs. Otherwise, the gothic scene is very limited in anime and do pretty poorly rating wise, since most dark tone/mood ones tend to air after midnight (way beyond most mainstream stuff). But, do watch Princess Tutu since it is a gothic show, dark in tone and mood on the inside albeit seemingly light and fluffy on the outside.

JohnAD:

Thanks for the title name. So, Geneon decided to leave "Tsukihime" alone. Good... ^^ None of this "Ahiru"->"Duck" translation B.S. that ADV is doing. ADV destroys another good series with their crappy "catering to the lowest common denominator" dub loving anime fans who give a rat's ass about accuracy.
I was able to pick up the third volume of Fullmetal Alchemist yesterday. I have yet to open the tin from volume 1 - how many volumes will fit in there? I probably should try to watch those so I can decide whether to keep buying them or not.

Kong - What was that one title you mentioned to me a couple weeks back? Trinity Blood or something like that? I have to do some research on that one to see if it will be one I pick up. Between FMA, Samurai 7, Gankutsuou, and Elfen Lied my series to collect are about maxed out.

JamesK:

I think it was sousei no Aquarion (Holy Genesis Aquarion) by Shoji Kawamori.
That was one, too, but I thought there was one you told me about that was a horror title.
The only horror title would be elfenlied
Heh.

I went to a large comic shop and ended up buying (yes) more manga (well just two more). Got Samurai Deeper Kyo #13 and Genshiken #1. Finally broke 400 volumes - at 401 manga now. Also managed to finish the A.I. Love You Manga. Good stuff.
Aquarion Episode 6 fansub was released a few days ago. I've only watched the first 2 or 3 - definately a fun show. Not horror - the tone is more like Last Exile meets Gundam.
I finally got to dip into my pile of new DVDs last night. I watched Ghost in the Shell:SAC volume six SE. I think the episodes on this disk make it the best one so far. All three episodes were simply amazing. Once volume seven comes out, I will be rewatching the whole thing in preparation for the 2nd GIG .

I watched the first 2 episodes of Gantz the other day and it was pretty good. It's certainly got me interested and intrigued about the story. The violence didn't worry me and the nudity was a little unusual for me but it fit in with the story. Some of the humor was a bit borderline though. Especially that bit with the dog when the girl is naked.
Gantz is all about being over the top. Its definately a dark and cynical show, but I love it. The bit with the dog was strait from the manga BTW - although the dialog is slightly different.

Personally, I find everything about that show to be extremely funny but also honest - especially the exposed thinking stuff.

For example, the reactions on the train platform in Episode 1 were so dead on - its what you are hoping people are NOT thinking in real life but probably are, but would never admit it. Lets face it, best case - the majority of people will stand by and watch bad stuff happen and not look away.

Anyhow, in my mind, that's what Gantz offers.
I do like exposed thinking stuff. That first episode was dead on and when Kei gets insecure in the second episode it also felt spot on for a teenager.
"Take her home Kei."
"Huh? OK..." [SCORE!!!]

We should have a contest on who can make the shortest post (not including signature) on the anime thread while staying on topic. ;P
