HTF Anime Discussion Part VIII - Page 10

Kong:

Unfortunately, no. I was just as geeky then as I am now. I think a lot of people underestimated me, though, since I was a lineman. Just to put it perspective, we had 12 valedictorians, and I think they all played sports, so it wasn't your 'usual' group of players.

Woo:

Well, I'll keep Fighting Spirit in mind, although I think it'll have to wait for a bit.

JohnAD:

Watch hikaru no go!!! ^^

And your high school must have been really smart to have valedictorians play football. Most of our football players when I was high school were complete jock-heads (aka dumb).
Heh. I can say that most kids in my HS Football team weren't your average jocks. But then, Stuyvesant HS is one of the top public High Schools in the nation and on the east coast, and you had to pass an exam to get in.

Hikaru no Go isn't out yet on dvd here I belive, but someone correct me if I am wrong...

Kong:

I don't think any played football, but one of my friends played basketball, and I several others were on different teams. Even so, a number of the the football players were in the 'smart' classes with me. We had our 'dumb' ones, too, but I think they really encouraged a well-rounded education at my high school, so the truly dumb jocks were kept to a minimum.

Is Hikaru no Go out in R1 yet?

John.

I thought it was licensed, no?

But definitely read the manga and watch the anime. Anime changed bits and pieces.

Manga is really fasty paced because they cut out all the middle strategy for the exhilarating parts of "go" play. "Go" has fundamental basic strategy and more complex strategies which can boggle the mind because unlike chess, you have to look at "go" like a warfield/battlefield and your pieces as soldiers. It is very complex and a good go player knows when he or she is defeated way before the final move.

However, RL "go" play is boring because of the un-fast pace it goes at. But the manga and anime goes at a faster pace to keep you on the edge of your seats. ^^

I find that most sports-minded players tend to be ultra-stupid and get away with a C-average in high school. Pretty pitiful creatures. If school was like in Asia where you have to study and take a test to get into the elementary/middle/high school you wanted to enter, education would be a total different story. College entrance exams over there are soooooo hard, not like here which is a joke comparatively.

Picked up Burst Angel #1 yesterday. I watched a few of the fansubs a month or so ago - its better than the lame reviews its been getting.

And speaking of Bazooka Boobs, has anyone tried to stomach Divergence Eve? Talk about rediculous. They are not supposed to look like footballs! Too bad, the show otherwise has some potential (although very little) but I can't get by the lame fan service.
Heh. I believe ShoPro or Viz licensed Hikaru no Go but it still seems up in the air XD. Would love to hear it is gonna be released.

Anyhow, I am eagerly awaiting the release of Jubei Chan 2 here in the US (later this month or maybe early June, as Jubei-chan: Secret of the Lovely Eyepatch had great action and comedy. What I've seen of Jubei Chan 2 is just awesome, with truly kick ass action (sword action. Not as gritty as Peacemaker Kurogane, but still quite good.. great editing.) and Freasha is just so darned cute....

/lolicon mode >_<;;

Not much going on but got some manga and a book.

Manga I got last nite are:

A.I. Love You 6-8 (finishes off this series.)
Ranma 1/2 30 (This series is like the Energizer bunny for Viz. It keeps going and going and...)
Samurai Deeper Kyo 10-12
Battle Vixens 7 (yes, it's an awful translation. But I started it so dagnabbit, I'll finish it! It's like 8 or 10 vols altogether so almost done...)
Negima 4-5 - now I am interested again due to my liking of AI Love You.

/starting politics and real life stuff...
(put in spoiler box as it isn't related to anime at all....)

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

The book (non anime related) *gasps* that I got was A Sense of Duty, by Quang Pham. Basically tells the history and story of father and son and how they served their respective countries ( His father was an officer in the S. Vietnamese Air Force while his son served in Iraq War 1 as a Marine.) Sadly, his father got his family out but was captured by N. Vietnamese army and sent to labor/concentration camps for the next 20+ years. The father was finally released and brought back to the US, where he died.

The main reason for my interest in this are:

1. This might have been me if I had stayed in ROTC. I might have even been to the current war in either Afghanistan and/or Iraq.

2. The story of someone whose been both in the military and was on teh receiving end of the consequences of war in Nam and Iraq.

3. Reading a story about a fellow immigrant never gets old.

Woo:

Well, it looks like T&A won out last night. I picked up the following disks:

Appleseed LCE
Burn Up Scramble vols. A-C
Chrono Crusade vol. 1
Ikki-Tousen vols. 1-4
Paranoia Agent vol. 4
Sakura Wars OVA

Unfortunately, my local store didn't have Tenchi in Tokyo vol. 8. Still, I finished off four series, which is a record for me, and I got back over the 50% anime mark for my collection.

As for real life
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
IIRC, Quong Pham was mentioned on a PBS show just recently (The Fall of Saigon, on The American Experience).

Nifty. I didn't even know that they were making a sequel. Jubei-chan is a pretty enjoyable series.

As for Hikaru No Go, I have some interest, since I have friends who play Go all the time. I've played a couple of times, and it is a deceptively tough game to master. I have yet to win a game.

For those following the HnG manga being released by Viz:
According to viz's shonen jump pages, Hikaru no Go #4 is out at the end of this month. Can't wait....

JohnAD: Don't say I didn't warn you. Just so you know, if you are collecting Fighting spirit, get the first two volumes. The first real fight in the series occurs at episode 6 and goes to ep 7, and is completely worth watching. The stuff before is sorta "build up". Good and funny stuff, but build up nonetheless.

I did start Geneshaft last night. Only saw episode 1. Will hopefully finish the series this week.

I'll prolly also try to squeez in Ikki Tousen #3 and and #4 at some point.
Woo:

I'm not expecting depth or anything . I'm expecting fighting, T&A, and not much else. I guess I just have a soft spot for mindless entertainment every now and then.

John.
Heh. That's fine. But don't let that make you ignore the GOOD/GREAT shows available. I mean none of us here are made of $$. ^_^;
Hahaha, made out of money.....

R2 collection keeps me from buying R1s.

Although I will be picking up sensei no ojikan from Pioneer whenever it gets released.

Ack, John, you spent $80 on crap series....that you will have a hard time getting rid of it trying to sell it someone else. That series is goddamnn awful. Save your money on something better with T&A.

Anyway, got my hands on all of elfen leid (leid is pronounced like leet) episodes and watched up to episode 4. Very bloody and cute and addictive as hell. I couldn't stop watching it. If it weren't for work, I probably would've stayed up all night finishing the series up. Will finish it up this week. So far, from four episodes, this series deserves a good solid A grade. I wish we could show this in our club on campus but because of all the nudity, I doubt it... LoL.

Kong & Woo:

I appreciate the fact that you don't like Ikki-Tousen, but I prefer to make up my own mind about this series. Even if I don't end up caring for it, it can't be any worse than Betterman, and I can live with having that in my collection, and even rewatched the whole thing.

John.
John - Post your impressions of Ikki-Tousen when you are done with it. I'm not typically into that kind of series (at least based on what I've heard about it), but I have to say that the charcter designs do look appealing to me. If you were closer to me on the left coast I'd break taboo and ask to borrow them from you . Oh, it's too late now but are you a "box" enthusiast or do you skip them for just the disc?

Woo - Your enthusiasm for Fighting Spirit has not gone unnoticed by me. I would like to check it out at some point. A 15 volume series though....

Kong - Sorry we haven't been able to hook up much in GW. My gaming window doesn't usually work well for grouping up with friends. Back to anime, I could have picked up the first volume of Elfen Lied yesterday. It's only $26 so we'll see, but I bought 3 other movies that day. I saw the warning about violence (not an issue for me) and prolonged nudity (a little more of an issue - I know, I know, it's a debatable ordering of values but it is what it is). How prevalent is the nudity? From what I've read, it seems to mostly be in the first episode. Does the series depict graphic sex? It's a short series so I might be able to convince myself to pick it up, but I want to clear up those questions before I decide.
Shes just walking around naked for the first few minutes, but you'll hardly notice with all the body parts flying around .
JohnAD:

No worries, as my large collection also has it's own share of duds ^_^; And I still enjoy them even if they ain't B or even C series.

If I am being too preachy, let me know. Don't be afraid to smack me upside the head with a warning. As I am quite stubborn and clueless.

Ahem....

James Kiang:

Heh thanks for the support, as not too many people seem to notice this series at all, or even how good it is.

All:

Dammit - now I am interested in Elfen Lied XD.

Ah, yes, Bazooka Boob Syndrome. I don't mind the occasional GAINAX Bounce one bit, and Plastic Little is so slick I can forgive it the slight touch of "porno" feeling, but those Bazooka Boobs worry me. Burn-Up W features them, and they're not just unattractive but more than a little disquieting [them and the lolicon-service computer programmer].

Kong: But then a bunch of bastards like me, who BS'd their way into the 95th percentile, would be running things instead of the 25th percentile bastards with good hair who are running them now. Is this really an improvement?

Woo: Not Air force ROTC by any chance? My experience with AFROTC is that it has a surprising proportion of first- and second-generation folks, particularly Asians, particularly Koreans [what does "nisei" come out to in Korean?].
No, Army ROTC. And the first generation is like Yil-sae dae, second is Yi-sae dae. (Note: My romanization is prolly way off. But I'll bet dollars to cents that the kanji/hanja for it is exactly the same. (Translation notes: Il or Yil means first, sae-dae is like generation. Yi is second/two. Thus second generation. ) Occasionally, we also lump those born in korea but raised here as 1.5 generation....

James:

I generally don't seek out boxes, but I'll get them if they're cheaper. I avoid 1st disk + box/last disk + box combos, since the extra $5-$10 is better spent on more disks .

BTW, my minions have next week off (to go see Episode III), so any delays/disk shortages are all ADVs fault during that time .

Woo:

That's OK. I think my response came across a little sharper than I intended. I probably should have included a smiley or two .

*cowers before the Sith lord*

Heh now JohnAD has made me want to check out Betterman ^_^;

I guess this defines the phrase "Otaku enabling Otaku."

James:

Fifteen discs seem long until you've started collecting even longer series. First really long series I've completed was Rurouni Kenshin. At 22 discs, it was the longest thing. Until I started up with Urusei Yatsura. That series has 8 5 disc boxes so far (of w hich I only posess 5). Or Ranma - still need the last 3 seasons. So it's all relative.... I mean look at Dragonball and Dragonball Z and its numerous incarnations/dvds.
On of my best friends was starting center for the football team his high school year. And he was Salututorian.

Anywho, I finally finished RahXephon, two/three years after I started it. Oh well.

It gets: A

Just loved the series, but then I'm a sap for

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
love stories.
John - I think your minions got a little overzealous since Elfen Lied was supposed to come out next week but is on the shelves at one of my local "betterest purchase" stores.

Woo - Twelve Kingdoms has been the longest series I've collected so far. The quality of that one - though I haven't made it past disc 4 - really drew me in and helped make it seem reasonable.

Dome - RahXephon would get an A from me as well. I should re-watch that at some point and I still have the movie to watch. I loved the ending of that series.

I'm looking at 12 hours in line for SW, and I might even dress up for the first time :b . Anyone beat that? (Or care to? )

Go for it. Fun and silliness is always welcome, as life can be deadly busy and boring for most folk...

Oh I have a LiveJournal that I update whenever I feel like.

James:

I'm seeing Episode III 4 times the first two days - twice on Thursday and twice on Friday. I don't think I'll dress up, but I did pick up the soundtrack, and have been listening to it multiple times daily since the 3rd (I'm listening as I write this). Plus, I've been rewatching the movies and will be rewatching the Clone Wars cartoons on Tuesday with my friends. My wife just pats me on the head .

Woo:

Checked out your LJ.

John.
JohnAD:

Yeah, it aint much of an LJ, but it is my space
post #297 of 2394
Woo:

Everyone needs their space .

ChrisDAC:

Huh? I don't get you. Are you talking about the football thingee?

James Kiang:

Actually it has a lot of nudity in episode 1, and some sporadic nudity in the other episodes. I think a lot of people forget that nudity has a purpose in the series and you'll see why the girl has to be nude. Not necessarily to entice viewers either.

No worries on GW. I am now level 11 and working up to level 12 soon. Good thing is that I don't have to be on all the time. I feel much better.

JohnAD:

Trust me, it is worse than Betterman and Betterman was crap too but at least it had a better plot than Ikkitousen.
Woo:
I actually have a LJ also that I write in everynight, mine is probrably a couple thousand pages by now!

All: Haven't picked up any anime lately unfortunatly but on the bright side of things, Dave and I just found out Sunday that we will be expecting a little one of our own this upcoming January. So...that'll keep us a little more budgeted but...at least now we'll be able to join in on what anime is good for small children! hehe....

Hey, congrats on that manju bun in your oven. ^^

You will have awhile before constraining your budget but it will be nice to put some aside for the upcoming manju bun festival. ^^
