Max:Unfortunately, the high-end market (and if you have an HDTV, you're considered 'high-end') is not a large enough market for them to bother with trying to please. Realistically, anime DVDs are made to look good on regular, SD TVs, which the vast majority of people have. If you watch GITS:SAC on a regular TV, unless you have a truly massive SD tube, you probably would never, ever notice that anything was 'wrong'. I agree that it's unfortunate that they put in the EE, but I think it will take a few years, plus a greater penetration of HD into the market, before enough people would complain to make it worth their while to master the disks without EE.
In regards to the GITS:SAC tin, mine arrived unscathed. It's made of the exact same material that the first season's was, so I guess luck was on my side
