Weekly RoundUp 4/12/2005

The Weekly RoundUp

There will be no rescue, no intervention for us. We can only save ourselves. Many of you know influential people abroad, you must call these people. You must tell them what will happen to us... say goodbye. But when you say goodbye, say it as if you are reaching through the phone and holding their hand. Let them know that if they let go of that hand, you will die. We must shame them into sending help.

Standard disclaimer: All prices are taken from the websites of each chain, or from their printed advertisements, the Sunday of the week of release (so as to catch any week-of-release sale prices). All prices are subject to change by each chain. Prices and inventory in-store may or may not match the website price. If a price is marked "$_N/A_" in the grid, it means that this title is not shown as available on that chain's website or perhaps in their ads...but it COULD still be in-stores!

$_"LP" means the advertisement says "Low Price", and $_"HP" means the advertisement says "Hot Price". Use of either of these in the Roundup grid indicates that I could not locate a definite price for the item, and the ad is all I have to go on. Retailers use these phrases in advertisements so that they do not violate MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) agreements with the studios. Doing so can cost them thousands or even millions of dollars in co-op advertising funds.

I only include the titles I feel like including (or the ones Dave tells me he's looking for ;o)). In fact, the titles are pretty much the ones I'm personally interested in, with few exceptions. I don't get paid for this, and I don't have time to devote to doing every DVD. So, please don't complain. If there is a title not included in the Roundup that you want to see, just look it up yourself, and be nice enough to post and share the results with everyone...like Dave & I do!

Note that Circuit City does not guarantee their sale prices in Hawaii. Also note that I cannot include Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club prices in the standard Roundup: they set prices at individual stores based on nearby competition, so there is not a way I can say here what price you'll find at YOUR local Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club location. When it comes to Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club prices mentioned at all, just remember that "Your Mileage May Vary".

**BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL! [i]Suspect Zero is available in both OAR and MAR versions...get the correct one! Also, Bad Education is available in both R-Rated and Not-Rated editions...get the correct one!

--Amazon is still featuring free shipping on orders over $25. Restrictions apply.

--Well, you knew it was going to happen. It was only a matter of time. And that time has now come. Best Buy is now offering certain DVD savings only to those who are members of their Reward Zone program!! On the following titles, Reward Zone members save an additional $3 to $5 on these already low advertised prices:

[c]Bob Newhart Show: Season 1 $19.99 (after RZ Savings)
Harvey Birdman: Volume 1 $21.99
Space Ghost-Coast to Coast: Volume 3 $21.99
Viva La Bam: Seasons 2 & 3 $26.99
The Jeffersons: Season 3 $21.99
All In the Family: Season 4 $21.99
Sledge Hammer!: Season 2 $26.99
Knight Rider: Season 2 $32.99
The A-Team: Season 2 $32.99
Magnum P.I.: Season 2 $32.99 [/c]

--Best Buy is also offering a 2/$20 deal on Ocean’s Eleven ($9.99) and Ocean’s Twelve ($16.99). $10 + $17 = $27. $27 - $20 = $7 savings. Must be purchased on same receipt.

--Circuit City is offering a FREE CD with the purchase of Ocean’s Twelve ($14.99) at their stores. “Vegas Passport” is a 10-track full-length CD featuring music inspired by the film. While supplies last. Minimum 30 per store. Plus, they have Ocean’s Eleven on sale for $5.99…making that combo 2/$21 plus the FREE CD.

--Those of you who have been waiting patiently for the latest DVD releases of the films of Truffaut, Renoir and Bergman can take respite in the fact that this week Circuit City is offering the following deal: buy Viva La Bam: Seasons 2 & 3 ($24.99) and you can buy Jackass the Movie ($9.99) for just $3. Just $3!

And now a word from our sponsor….

If anyone who reads the RoundUp is not aware of this, running the HTF is not free for Parker and Ron. That is why there is advertising throughout the forum and there has been the occasional membership fund drive. I’m sure I don’t need to remind you folks of all the different reasons we benefit from keeping the USS HTF afloat. But, you might not be aware…
THERE IS AN EASY WAY FOR YOU TO HELP!

According to Ron & Parker, many members enter the HTF through the index page or by clicking their own shortcut directly into a favorite forum. If members would simply link to the Portal Page when they start their visit to the HTF, that act alone would bring revenue to the forum. While it would also be nice if you wanted to click on some of the advertisers’ links and check out their deals and sales (that form of “window shopping” would bring even more revenue to the forum), the simple act of landing on the portal page registers a “hit” or “impression” that creates revenue for the HTF.

I was unaware of this until recently and have since changed my desktop shortcuts on the different computers I use to link to the Portal Page. I bet doing that over the past week or so has resulted in several dozen more “hits” from me alone. And, I thought I would pass along my newly-gained knowledge to anyone else who might not know the score.

So, if you want to help out, its easy…and will help keep the HTF in business.

And to think I almost missed that release this week! :b

I must admit. I know NOTHING about this show. But I think the packaging (especially the disc labels) look VERY cool!

Thanks although I'm not getting anything this week. I can't believe Oceans 12 with a freakin' trailer is going to be its last release. There's gotta be an SE planned.
Thanks Mike.

A pretty heavy, and unusual week for me. Heavy cause I'll be buying 5 things. Unusual cause a couple of those are blind buys which I don't do. But in this case, even if I don't like them, I'm pretty certain my son will.

The Bob Newhart Show
The Barefoot Executive
Million Dollar Duck
Adventures of Bullwhip Griffin
Lt. Robin Crusoe, USN

george: I sense a trend with those last four titles on your list.

Do you know if their aspect ratios are okay? I don't have any knowledge that they are not, I only ask because I thought there might have been some questions about whether BVHV has MAR'ed some of its catalog titles in the past.

Wow, what an amazing price for this. For anyone who was on the fence or unfamiliar with this great show, jump on this!

Found the THREAD I was thinking of. Not surprised to see you as a participant.

Still not sure of the answer, though.
I was going to get Bob Newhart at Target, but I can't pass up the price at BB for RewardZone members! Plus, I am almost close to getting another certificate!
Thanks, as always, Mike & Patrick. It'll be All in the Family S4 and Viva La Bam Ss 2&3 for me tnis week. I may also pick up Bob Newhart S1, but probably not.

And BB's lower prices exclusively for RZ members is just another reason to dislike BB. Having it on occasion (as they have in the past) is fine, but to have it on the bulk of this week's new releases is getting ridiculous. They're turning into a mini Costco/BJ's/Sam's Club, charging a premium for non-members.
Mike,

It is nearly impossible to tell half the time what the OAR of these Disney films even was. Some have been released that are clearly OAR, others clearly p&s, but many are still a question mark.

I'm actually leaving town for a conference this week, so won't be buy these til I get back next weekend, and of course will search for any info about those titles before I do so, but I suspect that it will be indeterminant.
Well, if I had the money I'd buy Space Ghost and Harvey Birdman this week.

Thanks for the roundup as always.
Here's what I pulled out:
All in the Family Season 2
Bad Education
Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law Vol. 1
Hotel Rwanda
Invader ZIM: House Box Complete Set
Japanese Hell
Knight Rider Season 2
Memento Mori
Ocean's 12
Red Wolf
Requiem from the Darkness Vol 4
Space Ghost Coast to Coast Vol 3
Suspect Zero
The A-Team Season 2
The Woodsman

What I get is a whole other issue.
If I wasn't saving up money for a portable dvd player, I would pick up the Birdman volume 1 and Invader Zim house. Thanks for the round up Mike.

Actually, this is not the first time Best Buy has done this. A while back, they had DVD's on sale only for RZ members.

Harvey Birdman and Space Ghost for me!

"Well, you knew it was going to happen. It was only a matter of time. And that time has now come. Best Buy is now offering certain DVD savings only to those who are members of their Reward Zone program!!"

It's $10 to join RZ. If you think that you'll save more than $10 over the course of the year then it makes sense to join. If you won't, then go to the place with the cheaper regular price.

Just Hotel Rwanda and Ocean 12 for me.

Thanks

I've reviewed all four of the new Disney DVDs at UltimateDisney.com. The Adventures of Bullwhip Griffin is the only one correctly presented in its theatrical aspect ratio; it is 1.66:1 anamorphic widescreen on DVD. The other three appear to be mostly open-matte, with probably some cropping from mildly wider aspect ratios (1.66:1 or 1.75:1). Not all of them look so great either, but Bullwhip does.

If you missed out on the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit gift-pack last month ($24.99), it's now $6.99 at Best Buy online (I believe it'll ring up as such at the retail stores as well).

Hmmmmm.
Oh, awesome! Just when I thought I was getting little value out of Reward Zone, they offer this. I'll be getting A-Team, Magnum, pi, and Bob Newhart at Best Buy. Until I saw that, I figured I'd have to swing by Circuit City for Magnum (or price match).
FYI:

According to my ad, you have to be a Rewards Zone member to get both Ocean's 12 and Ocean's 11 for $20 on the same reciept. Non members can get Ocean's 11 for $9.99 and Ocean's 12 for $16.99.
Thanks Mike.

There are a couple of Mr. Rogers DVDs coming out that I will get. Sam's Club is selling them for $11.xx (they include the bonus toys).

Sam's is also carrying the Bob Newhart Show for $19.xx. I'll pick it up at either Sam's/Costco (whoever has it cheaper).

Costco is selling all of those season 1 sets that are $17.99 at BB for $14.99 each.

I would've picked up Boomtown yesterday if my wife hadn't been there to stop me!
