Why is a Japanese Translation Pack popping-up when I click this thread?

http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htfo...00#post2631900

Click it, I dare you

EDIT: It popped up when I submitted this thread too.

Uhm....

Nothing on my end. Just clicked on that link.

Unless anyone has the same problem I would
take a wild guess and say that something has
sneaked into your computer's browser that
should not be there.

Nope, I get it too. On multiple machines.

There is some character that IE, all of a sudden, thisnks is a japanese character. I have gotten the download notice on several forum pages.

PS: it came up when i posted this too. it's coming from the text in the google ad in the upper right corner-- a text ad for Unicef japan (http://www.unicef.or.jp/?as_grant)

That has to be coming from Google then. Odd.

If it continues to happen let me know what the Google ad says and I will email them about it.

You shouldn't see this anymore. If you do then let me know.

I'm still getting it as of now. Definitely looks like the google ad. The ad seems to point to a variety of sites. I'd say I was getting more japanese ads in the upper right corner ad than english ones.

I am afraid I too am getting this pop-up, and I think the problem may be related to the dreaded...

'about: blank' Virus

Here are a couple useful links on it:

Recent Problem Solving Discussion on the Virus at NT COMPATIBLE

Useful Recommendation for Removing this Virus from the NT Pros at Akadia

I also noticed that when I am on the front page of HTF and I place the pointer on "Control Panel" and then click on "vB Home" - instead of sending me to the home page which it used to, instead it sends me to goto: home which appears to be a part of the about: blank virus and redirects me to some randomly selected spam search engine.

This is a REALLY annoying virus and is not terribly easy to avoid or get rid of so be careful and do your homework! The semi-good news is that it does not appear to be a destructive virus... more like a nagging one.

Interesting. I will alert Google about this.

I don't get the same error you are getting with the Control Panel > vB Home that you are getting.

Perhaps the reason I am not seeing it is because
I am using Firefox instead of IE.

Definitely don't think it has anything to do with that virus referenced above. Don't know if firefox by default will prompt for additional language fonts, so that could definitely be why it doesn't show up in firefox. Although it'd be interesting to know if firefox is still trying to show the foreign language ad in the upper right. But I'd definitely guess that it's just google for some reason serving strange ads. But it's odd that not too many people seem to be saying anything about it.

You forced my hand. I've been getting this and have been following this thread for a few days. Just got it while posting this. Very annoying. Make it stop. Please.

Getting it as well, but only at home (XP), not at work (2000). There could be other factors of course. Hope this helps.

EDIT: I do remember actually seeing japanese (well ideograms, I didn't know it was jap ) text in that google ad at work, which at this point means nothing more than confirming the presence of the language pack on that machine - and probably has squat to do with the OS.

I've been getting this also the past couple of days. It just occurred to me to check this forum to see if it was just me or if others are getting it. It sounds like I'm not alone. Hopefully google can make this go away.

I have written Google and even added the URLs of the Japanese sites to the block list for the ads with no luck in blocking them. I wrote back to them again this afternoon about the fact that they are still showing up. Hopefully they will stop soon.

I get it at work, where I have to use IE. I use Firefox at home and don't have the problem.

Using IE, I have been seeing these Google Japanese UNICEF ads this past week. They don't bother me that much since I can read the ol' hash-marks well enough to know what they mean, but I have been thinking that they were a little odd.

FYI, I have been getting the language install message a lot lately, all over the HTF site.
