Jaws 30th Anniversary Edition in June - Page 9

I dont see the point in upgrading either Jaws or Casino is the video or audio isnt improved.

JonZ-

I would consider the original mono an "audio improvement" over the previous DVD releases of Jaws.

Probably the BIGGEST reason to get the new version.

Just a question...are the DTS and 5.1 tracks still the same old versions with replaced effects? How sweet would it be if they made new ones with the original effects!

What, you didn't approve of the new "shattering glass" sound when the shark explodes (in the 5.1 remix), instead of the the original cool ricochet sound in the original mono track?

I haven't heard the 5.1 track in a long time to compare it to the original mono, but that just sounds funny.

FYI:

Scandinavia will see an Exclusive Limited Deluxe 3-Disc Collector´s Edition August 31st.

What's the third disc - the soundtrack CD? My guess is that the UK will also be seeing this set. Likely to cost around £40-50.

I am sure other e-tailers will follow quickly

Japan is getting it as well. And this should be in the international forum.

Just bought the R1 se this morning. The packaging is pretty nice and I thumbed through the 60pg booklet, looks like alot of good stuff in it. Now just need to find the time to watch it. Probably tonight.
It was nice hearing the mono track again.

Anybody else notice that they tweaked a picture on the back on the package? The pic of Quint, Brody, and Hooper looking down at the shark was originally the three of them at the aft of the boat. I guess they cut and pasted them onto the front of the ship so the shark could be in the picture too

Does the mono track have the Olivia Newton-John song coming from the radio on the beach?
The booklet is nice but the quotes inside are either lines from the movie or the documentary. Wish they had something a original in this package but I guess not.

Also, the second disc is single layered which pretty much sucks.

Scott, on the mono track the song is the same song as the first DVD. Whether or not it's an Olivia Newton John, I couldn't tell ya The easiest time to tell (for me anyway) that it's the same song is when Ellen says "Chief Brody, you are uptight".

Am I correct in thinking there is only one song that plays over the scene?

The song is Paul Anka's "(You're) Having My Baby". It trades off vocals with Anka singing along with Odia Coates.

Some of the lyrics:

Paul:Having my baby
what a lovely way of saying
How much you love me.

[Note: You can hear Anka singing the above when Alex the boy is asking to go back in the water]

Odia: I'm a woman in love and I love
What it's doin' to me.
Having my baby.
I'm a woman in love and I love
What's goin' through me.

I always thought that was a cover version of Olivia Newton-John's "I Honestly Love You", even back in 1975. Anyway, with the addition of the mono soundtrack everything is as it should be. The opening bass chords of the score are sufficiently loud once again. The shark bursting through the windows of the "Orca" doesn't sound like the breaking of a crystal champagne glass anymore. And the detonation of the compressed air tank sounds just right. As far as I'm concerned, "Jaws" is "Jaws" again. Thanks, Universal.

I'm good with it! I know there are always going to be complaints about one issue or another, but my viewing of the dvd with the mono sound this afternoon was very satisfying to me.

Single layer doesn't degrade the quality any, unless they decided to compress the picture in order to fit it onto the disc. Otherwise, the quality can be every bit as good as a dual layered disc.

Joe, are you talking about the same song? I distinctly remember Olivia Newton-John's "I Honestly Love You" playing on the radio during the beach scene.

There may be more than one. I can tell you for certain that during the moment where Alex is asking his mom if he can go back into the water, you hear Paul Anka's voice over the radio, crooning "...what a lovely way of saying how much you love me..." (from the song I listed above).

After that, I don't recall what's in the next shot when Brody is "uptight". But I'm positive about the first.
If it's Olivia Newton John's song next, you could be right, too. For some reason, I don't have that one committed to memory!

EDITED TO ADD: I just checked my "old" JAWS DVD, and yep - that is Olivia in the background when Ellen is trying to help Brody relax. How did I never notice that?

The song being played on the beach while the Chief is nervously observing the swimmers in the water is "I Honestly Love You" by Olivia Newton John.

Yes, but in this case there's a two-hour documentary plus a plethora of other extras all crammed onto one layer. That much material is usually spread out over two.

IMO, this is a non-issue based on the extras on that disc. Besides the documentary, there are a bunch of stills and a short featurette. There is no multi-channel audio to eat up disc space. The documentary looked great.
IMHO, the documentary did NOT look great. It looked like a direct port from a laserdisc and regardless, would have benefited from a dual layer disc.

I can confirm a few things...

1) that "on the set" with spielberg is awesome...including the fact that it's all centered around a scene that was cut and re-shot.

2) the quality on the "making of" is directly from the laserdisc...as are all the rest of the supplements, oddly enough. I don't remember them looking that way on the old disc.

3) all of the deleted scenes/outtakes are now included from the laserdisc set.

so it seems like all they did was take everything that should have been done the first time around and do it this time.

Except the trailers...

Fortunately, I have the 25th Anniversary DVD, so I will just keep it around. However, it would have been nice had they been included so that I could get rid of it.

Oh well, it's like my dual copies of Silence of the Lambs and Halloween. I look at them as the definitive edition spread across multiple discs...
Well, I listened to the mono track and compared it directly to the laserdisc. Here are my observations.

First of all, I found no significant dynamic range compression. There is plenty of good bass on this DD mono track. However, I did notice one problem with it. I think the mastering (from analog to digital) could have been done better. It's a little hot, with the film showing audible distortion in the loudest moments (clipping). To be fair, even the LD had a little bit of this, but it's more pronounced on the DVD.

Still, the mono track is quite listenable, and strongly recommended over either 5.1 mix.

I just watched this and I cannot believe it was only rated at PG. Must have been very liberal back then.

Harold, this was the movie that caused all the stir to create a PG-13 rating. Before Jaws the PG-13 rating did not exist. I suppose since this movie was a big budget Universal movie, the censors allowed it to be released as PG, with a strong warning about children under 17 (If I remember correctly).

I seem to recall that the movie that spurred the adoption of the PG-13 rating was another Spielberg hit, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

Kinda tugs at your hearstrings to think about, doesn't it? . . .

I'm a little surprised that Jaws hasn't been re-rated by the MPAA, as it would most definitely be rated PG13 today.
I don't think a PG film would have a line like "Try chumming some of this shit."
